In excellent condition (the barest handling fold at sheet edge), printed on a heavy ivory wove paper, the full sheet with full margins, 4 7/8 x 3 1/4, the sheet 17 1/2 x 13 inches, archival mount with window mat.
A fine fresh impression of this great rarity, printed in a dark brown ink.
Kandinsky created this drypoint (erroneously named Etching 1916) in early 1916 while staying with Gabriel Munter in Stockholm during the winter of 1915-16. This is from the second series of drypoints he made; the first was in the year 1913-14.

“With just a few strokes of his brush he conjures up an entire world. James Coignard extends the boundaries between concrete and abstract. He knows how to create chromatic melodies that shift in timbre from cobalt blue to blood red. His pictures are an artistic epicentre where lines, letters and numbers meld with vigorous swashes of colour.” That is how the writer Johan Persson has described the artist’s paintings. With this exhibition we honour James Coignard, showing some of his last carborundum engravings and paintings as well as presenting the book “L’œuvre gravé de James Coignard” volume VI. In this edition, we have gathered together all the engravings that James Coignard produced between June 2005 and his decease, on 7 March 2008. Behind him he left many fond memories and a life’s work as a great artist. James Coignard’s principal modes of expression were oil on canvas and gravure au carborundum, but also in bronze and glass sculptures as well as in ceramics. His work has been shown on more than 400 exhibitions, primarily in Central Europe and Scandinavia, but also in Canada and the USA. His first Swedish exhibition was at Malmö Museum in 1956. The early 1970s saw the start of a long-term liaison with Galleri Östermalm in Stockholm, owned by Editions Sonet. Born in Vic, Cataluña, in 1947, he resides in Mexico since 1998. Heir of the Spanish school by tradition and through his personal relation with the three Spanish giants of the 20th Century: Picasso, Dalí and Miró.
He has over 50 individual exhibitions presented in Mexico, El Salvador, Puerto Rico, Spain, Sweden, France, and the U.S.A., such as “The color of the music of Rodolfo Halffter”, Pecanins Gallery (Mexico City, 2005); “Opus in color”, Museum of Anthropology (Jalapa, Ver., Mexico, 2004); Museum of Art of Queretaro (Queretaro, Mexico, 2001); Spanish Institute of Culture in El Salvador (San Salvador, El Salvador, 2000); “From flesh to passion”, Siqueiros Cultural Polyforum (Mexico City, 1999). He arrived in Mexico in 1997 with an invitation to present the exhibition “Germ of Illusions”, Pemex (Mexico City).
Before his experience in Mexico, he realized the Olympic Suite “Homage to the Olympic Subvenues Barcelona 92”, a permanent exhibition in the Olympic Museums of Barcelona and Lausanne, in 1992. He showed in 1996 with the Sotelo Blanco Foundation. Anthropology Museum of Santiago de Compostela, the Nakita Gallery (Stockholm, Sweden), Corrine Timsit International Galleries Inc. (San Juan de Puerto Rico and Paris, France). In 1990 he showed in the Museum of Hispanic Art (San Francisco, USA) and in the Museum and Gallery Elbine Dalvanes (Paris, France).
His exhibition “The Force of an Encounter”, Museum of Abstract Art Manuel Felguérez, March-June (Zacatecas, Zac., 2008) was a very interesting revision of his work in the past ten years, considering his analysis of musical language exclusively. This gave way to an evolution of his pictorial language.
He has participated in several collective exhibitions with artists such as: Argimon, Clave, Guinovart, Barceló, Saura and Tapies; Appel, Farreras and Joan Genovés; Cuixart, Subirachs and Tartas; Bartolotzi and Carbó Berthold; Rafols Casamada, Saura and Pelayo; Elvira Gascón and Nunik Sauret; Rogelio Cuellar, Gilda Castillo, Francisco Castro Leñero, Arnaldo Coen, Rafael Coronel, Irma Grizá, Sergio Hernández, Magali Lara, Irma Palacios...
