Salvador Dalí
"The Apotheosis of Homer" Original Chromolithograph Artist's Proof Signed C.O.A

1945

About the Item

An original Salvador Dali (1904-1989) signed Chromolithograph "The Temptation of St. Anthony", Artist's Proof on arches paper, created from the original 1945 painting . The artwork is signed lower right by Salvador Dali in pencil, and also signed "E.A." for Artist's Proof, lower left, E.A. is effectively a test print for the artist to check the plate from which the final image is printed, these were often the best quality versions, as there was no wear and tear on the plates at this early stage. Usually the first 20 or so of a print run, numbered separately to the main limited edition run, they were often kept by the artist or sold later. The paper is also embossed with the Tree of Life, indicating it was an edition produced while Dali was still alive for museum display, and not the "infinity" embossing blank sheets that he signed for publication after his death. The picture is framed & under glass, it is in excellent condition and ready to hang on your wall, it is accompanied with a C.O.A. The picture at sight & without the frame is 33.25" x 20.75" The Apotheosis of Homer is an oil on canvas painting by Salvador Dalí, created circa 1945. It is located at the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen, Pinakothek der Moderne, in Munich. The picture reflects the painter's fascination with Greek & Roman history and mythology. Gloria Platzner speculates that Dali "reduces Homer to a piece of broken statuary, a relic, while the solid temple of the muse itself melts"... The "ethereal horse" in the painting, which may be Pegasus, rejecting the riders who attempt to reach the stars, again signals the cessation of the myth. On the right, Gala, his wife, is depicted as a sleeping nude woman.

Born in Nashville Tennesee in 1937 Red Grooms is a; "Sculptor, painter, installation artist, filmmaker, and printmaker. An eager participant in late 1950s happenings, in the 1960s he developed high-spirited, mixed-media environmental sculpture on an enormous scale. In these “sculpto-pictoramas,” as he has called them, multiple, life-size, cartoonish figures inhabit sharply observed localities, usually areas of New York. Related to pop art, his zany work often carries a sarcastic edge but not at the expense of good-natured hilarity. It also plays on nostalgia that stems from the artist's evident affection for his acutely rendered subjects, as befits an admirer of Edward Hopper's paintings. Charles Roger Grooms left Peabody College there to enroll in the School of the Art Institute of Chicago for a year. He then decamped for New York to continue his studies at the New School for Social Research (now New School). He also attended Hans Hofmann's summer school in Provincetown. In the late 1950s, along with Allan Kaprow...
