Theodoros Stamos
The Greek American artist, Theodoros Stamos, was born in 1922 in New York City into a family of Greek immigrants. He was a member of The Irascibles group which consisted of the first generation of the New York School and Abstract Expressionism. Members included Jimmy Ernst, Barnett Newman, James Brooks, Mark Rothko, Jackson Pollock, Clyfford Still, Robert Motherwell, Ad Reinhardt, and others. Betty Parsons hosted a solo exhibition of Stamos work in 1943 when he was only 21 years old. In the years following, Parsons served as a vital mentor helping Stamos establish his position in the contemporary art world. Stamos early works from the 1940’s incorporated organic motifs and earthy coloring. As a member of The Irascibles, Stamos was influenced by his fellow members and his technique began to shift towards a more expressionist style. His works became increasingly simplified in the subsequent years, tending towards greater abstraction. Areas of flat color contrast one another to create a sense of depth in his works. Stamos taught at Black Mountain College in North Carolina, the Art Students League in New York, and the Cummington School of Fine Arts in Massachusetts. His art is owned by many major collections including The Phillips Collection in Washington, DC; Museum of Modern Art in New York, New York; and the Art Institute of Chicago in Chicago Illinois. He passed away in 1997 in Greece.

Alan Shields came of age artistically in the late 1960s in New York. Expanding the boundaries of Minimalism, he became known as a master of aesthetic invention through his wide-ranging exploration of materials and techniques. His mixed media works often contain combinations of traditional silkscreen processes combined with found materials. New York Times critic Roberta Smith wrote in her 2005 obituary for the artist: "Mr. Shields's work combined expanses of gorgeous stained color, reminiscent of Helen Frankenthaler's canvases, with the humbler crafts and a Gypsy sense of portability." Critic Robert Hughes has described Shields as a brilliant bricoleur who could, and often did, make art out of just about anything. He became an innovative printmaker, experimenting with handmade paper and turning out editions in which each print was unique. After his passing, Shields was awarded a Judith Rothschild Foundation grant given to recently deceased abstract artists whose work is of the highest quality but merits further recognition.
About Alan Shields:
Alan Shields (b. 1944, Herington, KS; d. 2005, Shelter Island, NY) created unique, imaginative, and theatrical structures using unconventional materials and vibrant color. His three-dimensional paintings convey a playful, deconstructive impulse through the incorporation of un-stretched hand-dyed canvas, rope, yarn, beads, and wood. Shields moved to New York City in 1968, where he showed with Paula Cooper...

Giuseppe Capogrossi Iconic Comb Design "Superficie 324" Serigrafia
By Giuseppe Capogrossi
Located in Detroit, MI
"Superficie 324" is a 1988 screen print (serigraph) of a 1959 painting by Capogrossi. This is one of his famous "comb" or "fork" works that he perfected in the 1950s and continued to create for the remainder of his life. The blocks of primary red and yellow colors give a bright, joyful feel and contrast to the strong bold black that was Capogrossi's consistent color for the "combs". With no allegorical, psychological, or symbolic meanings, these structural elements could be assembled and connected in countless variations. Intricate and insistent, Capogrossi's signs determined the construction of the pictorial surface. This piece is identified along one side: Giuseppe Capogrossi By SIAE 1988 Silvio Zamorani Editor Via Saccarelli, 9 10144 Torino Italy Tel. (39)(11) 4730554 Progetto Grafico (Graphic Project): Studio Walter Benjamin. Serigrafia (Screen Print): BISI Torino.
Capogrossi was born in Rome. After obtaining a degree in law in 1923–1924, he decided to study painting with Felice Carena at Accademia di Belle Arti di Roma. In 1927 Capogrossi embarked on a formative trip to Paris together with fellow artists and acquaintances Fausto Pirandello, Corrado Cagli and Emanuele Cavalli...
