About the Item

This exquisite lithograph by Wassily Kandinsky (1866–1944), titled Comets, from Verve, Revue Artistique et Litteraire, Vol. I, No. 2, originates from the 1938 issue published by Editions de la revue Verve, Paris, under the direction of Teriade, Editeur, Paris, and printed by Mourlot Freres, Paris, 1938. This radiant composition exemplifies Kandinsky’s exploration of cosmic harmony and the metaphysical rhythm of the universe. Comets embodies his pursuit of visual music—translating motion, sound, and energy into abstract form—through vibrant geometric structures and luminous color contrasts that evoke both celestial motion and spiritual transcendence. The work stands as a masterful testament to Kandinsky’s belief in art as a universal language of emotion and intuition. Executed as a lithograph on velin du Marais paper, this work measures 14 x 10.5 inches (35.56 x 26.67 cm). Signed in the plate and unnumbered as issued. The edition exemplifies the superb craftsmanship of the Mourlot Freres atelier, renowned for its collaborations with leading modernists of the 20th century. Conceived as a synthesis of art and literature, Verve brought together the greatest modern artists and writers of its time—Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, Marc Chagall, Georges Braque, Joan Miro, Fernand Leger, and others—alongside poets and philosophers such as Paul Eluard, Albert Camus, and Jean-Paul Sartre. Each issue was a work of art in itself, luxuriously printed by master ateliers such as Mourlot Freres and produced in collaboration with leading typographers and designers. Verve became a platform for avant-garde creativity, publishing original lithographs and essays that reflected the evolving spirit of modernism. Matisse collaborated closely with Teriade from the magazine’s inception, producing some of its most iconic issues, including those devoted to his paper cut-outs. The early issues of Verve, such as the 1938 volume featuring works by Kandinsky, exemplified the publication’s commitment to artistic innovation and the celebration of modern visual culture. About the Artist: Wassily Kandinsky (1866–1944) was a visionary Russian-born, later French, painter, printmaker, and pioneering theorist whose quest to translate music and spirituality into pure visual form helped birth abstract art and irrevocably transform the modern aesthetic. Emerging from a background of law and economics, he embraced painting in his late thirties and soon became a central figure in avant-garde circles—including co-founding the Munich-based Der Blaue Reiter and later teaching at the prestigious Bauhaus school—fusing his deep interests in Russian icon painting, folk ornament, theosophy, color theory, and the experimental energy of early 20th-century artistic innovation. Influenced by predecessors such as Cezanne, Matisse, and the non-European masks and forms he encountered, Kandinsky worked alongside and in dialogue with contemporaries including Alexander Calder, Alberto Giacometti, Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Marcel Duchamp, and Man Ray—artists united by a fearless rejection of conventional representation and a shared impulse toward radical visual invention. His compositions of floating geometric forms, vibrant chromatic symphonies, and lyrical abstractions not only charted new territory for the avant-garde in his own time but also inspired innumerable later artists—from the Abstract Expressionists like Jackson Pollock and Mark Rothko, to the Color Field painters, post-war neo-expressionists, and contemporary abstractionists who continue to echo his bold experimentations with color, line, and composition. Kandinsky’s works remain cornerstone acquisitions for major museums worldwide and prime offerings in the global collector market. His auction record stands with Murnau with Church II (1910), which sold for £37,196,800 (≈$44.9 million) at Sotheby’s, London, on March 1, 2023.
