Louis Ridel, born February 12, 1866 in Vannes and died November 10, 1937 in Paris, is a painter, sculptor, medalist, French decorator. Louis Ridel studied at the Académie Julian then under the direction of Gustave Moreau at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1889 (with Matisse, Camoin, Marquet and Rouault). He exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français between 1893 and 1935, at the Salon des Tuileries between 1927 and 1934, the Universal Exhibition of Ghent in 1913 and the famous Georges Petit Gallery (1909-1910). The works of the artist are present in the museums of Nantes, Strasbourg, Pont-Aven but also Tokyo, Buenos Aires and Rio de Janeiro. This symbolist painter, friend of Aman-Jean, Maxence and Albert Besnard, represented essentially women of the bourgeoisie, ethereal and diaphanous or landscapes of his native region, Brittany. In 1896, he received an honorable mention from the Salon des artistes français, then a third class medal in 1898 and second class in 1900. In 1901, he was out of competition. Shungo Sekiguchi, (Japanese, 1911-2002): Lithograph in color on Rives paper Hand signed in pencil lower right, hand numbered It appears to be the village of Montmarte in Paris This was published by the Guilde de la Gravure, Paris, France and bears their GG blindstamp. They were a mid century French art publisher and published many masters including Raoul Dufy, Max Erns, Jean Hans Arp, Ruffino Tamayo, Balthus, Gino Severini and Leonard Tsuguharu Foujita. Shungo Sekiguchi was born 1911 in Japan. In 1932 Shungo Sekiguchi contributed to the print series "One Hundred Views of Great Tokyo" (Dai Tokyo hyakkei). Prints from watercolors published by Kaneda Shoten (Nihon Hanga Ken-kyusho). In 1935, Sekiguchi moved to Paris, France to study at the prestigious Ecole des Beaux Art of France with a scholarship of the French government. He studied together with two other Ecole de Paris Japanese artists, Takanori Ogisu and Tsuguji Foujita. He exhibited at the prestigious "Salon d'Automne" in Paris. In 1940 when Paris was occupied by the German Nazis, Shungo Sekiguchi returned to Japan, but kept his ties with France. In 1952 he exhibited at the famous Salon d'Automne and received an award. In 1959, he received an award at the Vicci International Art Contest. In 1964, he received the Diplome d'Honneur des at Jobiji International Art Show. His retrospective exhibition has been held in many places in Japan. In 2002 the artist died in Japan. He is popular in Japan and several retrospective exhibitions were held in Japan. He was part of the Shin Hanga and Sosaku Hanga woodblock artists known for their woodcut prints and scrolls. Shin-hanga was an art movement in early 20th-century Japan, during the Taisho and Showa periods, that revitalized traditional ukiyo-e art rooted in the Edo and Meiji periods. He also worked as a book illustrator and did the artwork for the French edition of Le démon doré by Ozaki Kohyo. He is included in Helen Merritt and Nanako Yamada's classic book "Guide to Modern Japanese Woodblock...

About the artist: Zamy Steynovitz was born in Liegnitz, Poland in 1951 and at a very early age he aspired to be a painter. He won first prize in an art competition for children before immigrating to Israel in 1957. Formally educated at the Art School in Tel-Aviv and the Royal Academy in London, he completed his studies and began artistic pursuits in earnest. Zamy established his place in the art world after displaying his work in one-man exhibitions around the world. His art subjects has been strongly influenced by Jewish tradition and folklore. Additionally, his work presents general themes such as Paris cafes, still lives, flowers, circuses and landscapes. In the early stages of his work, he used rich pastels and light brush strokes. When he visited South America in the early 1980’s, his work reflected his new surroundings and were further enhanced by local brightness and colorfulness. His paintings are a reflection of his Eastern-European Jewish heritage, and they are enhanced by a rich choice of warm tones and colors He became known in the circles of the Nobel Institute for Peace in Norway, and consequently was acquainted with many Nobel prize winners, such as Anwar Sadat, Menahem Begin, the Dalai Lama, Itzhak Rabin, Shimon Peres, Elie Wiesel, Desmond Tutu, Oscar Arias Sanchez, as well as many of the world’s greatest leaders and artists. He tragically passed away in September of 2000. The work of Zamy Steynovitz is held in numerous collections worldwide. This Winslow Homer woodcut engraving entitled "Skating on the Ladies' Skating-Pond in Central Park, New York", was published in Harper's Weekly in the January 28, 1860 edition. It depicts a large number of men, women and children skating on a recently opened pond in Central Park. At the time of publication of this engraving, Central Park was in the early stages of construction. This engraving documents the very early appearance of Frederick Law Olmstead and Calvert Vaux's masterpiece of landscape design. According to Olmsted, the park was "of great importance as the first real Park made in this century – a democratic development of the highest significance". The people of New York were very proud of the plans for their park. It was stated at the time: "Our Park, which is progressing very satisfactorily under the management of the Commissioners, will undoubtedly be, one of these days, one of the finest place of the kind in the world...Those who saw the Park before the engineers went to work on it are amazed at the beautiful sites which have been contrived with such unpromising materials; all fair persons believe that the enterprise is managed with honesty and good taste." Skating was rapidly rising in national popularity in part due to the opening of Central Park’s lake to skaters on a Sunday in December 1858 with 300 participants.
