Pro Peace is a non-profit, non-partisan, citizens' action movement dedicated to global nuclear disarmament. As citizens of the world, we have an obligation to ourselves, "our children and our planet to end the threat of nuclear war. Pro Peace was born from an idea: 5,000 people walking across the United States for peace. THE GREAT PEACE MARCH IS... The Great Peace March is an idea which will inspire the world. On March 1, 1986, 5,000 people will begin a 9-month march for peace from Los Angeles through the Mojave Desert, over Colorado's 12,000-foot Loveland Pass, across the Great Plains to New York, culminating in our nation's capital 3,235 miles and 255 days later. In Washington, D.C., with one voice, in the spirit of peace, we will call upon our leaders to make global nuclear disarmament a reality and inspire other citizens of the world to change the course of history.” _ Keith Haring rose to prominence in 1980s New York within the East Village art scene alongside Jean-Michel Basquiat, Kenny Scharf, and Jenny Holzer. Haring bridged the gap between the art world and the street, graffiting city subways and sidewalks before committing to a studio practice. His major themes included exploitation, subjugation, drug abuse, and the threat of nuclear holocaust; Haring boldly engaged with social issues, especially after receiving an AIDS diagnosis in 1987. Today, his work sells for seven figures at auction and has been the subject of solo shows at the Brooklyn Museum, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the Albertina Museum in Vienna, among other major institutions.
