About the Item

Artist: Keith Haring (1958-1990) Title: Safe Sex! (Gundel 60) Year: 1987-1988 Medium: Offset lithograph on paper mounted on rice paper Size: 29.52 x 27.36 inches Condition: Very good condition Inscription: Hand signed and dated in felt-marker, right margin; signed and dated in the plate. Reference: Gundel, Marc, Keith Haring, and Claus von der Osten. 2002. Keith Haring: short messages. Munich: Prestel. Page 60. Notes: Even before being diagnosed with AIDS in 1988, Keith Haring was a strong advocate of safe sex within the gay community; he had already seen how the disease ravaged those close to him. This is one of many upbeat, positive images he created to promote the lifesaving gesture of simply wearing a condom. KEITH HARING (1958-1989) A leading Neo-Pop artist, was one of the most articulate members of his generation. He captivated the imaginations of New York City commuters with his subway wall drawings in the early 1980s, and later exhibited his works in prestigious museums throughout the world. The international success of his work has given rise to a proliferation of art in public places. Quick simple and direct, Haring's compositions of Radiant Babies and Barking Dogs draw one's attention to the playful surface activity, while beneath, one discovers Haring's unique world of sinister and subtle humor.
