About the Item

Houses is an original modern artwork realized by the Italian artist Mino Maccari (1898-1989) in 1929. Original woodcut print on paper. Hand-signed and dated by the artist in pencil on the lower right corner: Maccari 1929. Quite good conditions: foxing appears on the margin on the sheet. The plate is in very good conditions. Small woodcut realized by the master Maccari depicting a country landscape at below a mountain that we can see on the background on the right side. A road is opened in the center and, on the right and the left side, we see the buildings and trees. This work has been realized by the artist Mino Maccari (1898-1989). He was an Italian writer, painter, engraver and journalist, winner of the Feltrinelli Prize for Painting in 1963. His work was also part of the painting event in the art competition at the 1948 Summer Olympics. For his pictorial work rich in evident chromatic accentuations and quick brushstrokes, the violent drawing combined with the vivid line of the graphic sign of his engravings, he is recognized by the complete artist criticism.

While in high school Roger prepared lobsters for tourists at the Roy Moore Lobster Company on Bearskin Neck and sang and played harmonica with Tony Torissi’s hillbilly band. Roger enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard in 1942 and mustered out in 1946, ending his military career as a member of the USCG canine corps only two weeks from going to the Pacific with a Marine detachment. After having lived on both coasts (Manhattan and Los Angeles) he returned to his home town from the West Coast, vowing to never leave again, and he hasn’t. When he returned to Cape Ann he entered the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston where he majored in book design and illustration, graduating with honors. He illustrated a number of textbooks for D.C. Heath, Beacon Press, and other Boston publishers, as well as provided illustrations for the New York Sunday Times, the New Yorker magazine, the Atlantic Monthly magazine, and a book for the United Church of Christ. Roger also designed, carved and gold-leafed pipe shades for a number of C. B. Fisk pipe organs, builders of tracker action pipe organs, including those at Harvard and Stanford Universities. He began his teaching career in Rockport, teaching elementary grade art, following that with four years teaching at the New England School of Art in Boston. Roger became a founding faculty member of the Montserrat College of Art in Beverly, MA, where he taught for twenty years, retiring to make paintings. He was also elected Rockport’s Poet Laureate in the 1990s and in addition wrote and published three books about Rockport. Roger Martin has exhibited his work throughout New England and beyond. "Casa Marquez" original woodcut print signed by Carol Summers
By Carol Summers
Located in Milwaukee, WI
"Casa Marquez" is an excellent example of the printmaking of Carol Summers. In the image, Summers has featured a Spanish Renaissance building, replete with classical architecture - ionic pilasters and roman arches over glazed windows that reflect the landscape like a pair of eyes. In the far distance is a red sunset over the Mediterranean sea. This interest in classical subject matter is common of modern artists: both Picasso and Giorgio de Chirico looked to classical themes throughout their careers, abstracting Greek and Roman architecture and narratives to characterize the instability of modernity. Summers certainly does the same here by warping and tilting what should be a stable stone structure. The drama of Summer's representation of the villa is enhanced by his signature printmaking technique, which allows the ink from the woodblock to seep through the paper, blurring the edges of each form. The title of the print refers to the author Gabriel García Márquez, known for such novels as One Hundred Years of Solitude...

"Casa Marquez" Original Woodblock Print, Signed and Numbered 93/100
By Carol Summers
Located in Soquel, CA
"Casa Marquez" Original Woodblock Print, Signed and Numbered 93/100 Boldly colored woodblock print by Carol Summers (American, 1925-2016). This piece is a closeup on a large stone building, with a landscape reflected in the windows. The building has carved ornamentation in a classical style. There is a bright red sunset in the background behind the building. The title refers to the author Gabriel García Márquez. Signed "Carol Summers" in the lower right corner. Numbered and titled "93/100 Casa Marquez" in the upper right corner. Presented in a silver colored aluminum frame. Frame size: 19.25"H x 23.25"W Paper size: 16"H x 20"W Carol Summers (1925-2016) has worked as an artist throughout the second half of the 20th century and into the first years of the next, outliving most of his mid-century modernist peers. Initially trained as a painter, Summers was drawn to color woodcuts around 1950 and it became his specialty thereafter. Over the years he has developed a process and style that is both innovative and readily recognizable. His art is known for it’s large scale, saturated fields of bold color, semi-abstract treatment of landscapes from around the world and a luminescent quality achieved through a printmaking process he invented. In a career that has extended over half a century, Summers has hand-pulled approximately 245 woodcuts in editions that have typically run from 25 to 100 in number. His talent was both inherited and learned. Born in 1925 in Kingston, a small town in upstate New York, Summers was raised in nearby Woodstock with his older sister, Mary. His parents were both artists who had met in art school in St. Louis. During the Great Depression, when Carol was growing up, his father supported the family as a medical illustrator until he could return to painting. His mother was a watercolorist and also quite knowledgeable about the different kinds of papers used for various kinds of painting. Many years later, Summers would paint or print on thinly textured paper originally collected by his mother. From 1948 to 1951, Carol Summers trained in the classical fine and studio arts at Bard College and at the Art Students League of New York. He studied painting with Steven Hirsh and printmaking with Louis Schanker. He admired the shapes and colors favored by early modernists Paul Klee (Sw: 1879-1940) and Matt Phillips (Am: b.1927- ). After graduating, Summers quit working as a part-time carpenter and cabinetmaker (which had supported his schooling and living expenses) to focus fulltime on art. That same year, an early abstract, Bridge No. 1 was selected for a Purchase Prize in a competition sponsored by the Brooklyn Museum. In 1952, his work (Cathedral, Construction and Icarus) was shown the first time at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City in an exhibition of American woodcuts...
