From our research, it has been almost a decade since the last copy of this poster was available.
Rare Rene Vincent automobile poster. Black and white posters are a rarity as far as vintage posters are concerned. The original idea was to catch the attention of passersby in every possible way. Color was an essential tool in advertising when posters were an essential source for name-brand recognition. The absence of color gives these auto posters a touch of class. They can also be compared to old photographs. Either way, you're looking at something special.
This one is incredibly cool since it came from the talented artist Rene Vincent. If his name doesn't ring a bell, his poster "Porto Ramos" probably will if you look it up on our site. You will find that he also created automobile posters as early as 1905, which are all extremely rare and hard to find. Don’t let this excellent-condition vintage poster pass you by.
Vincent only got to devote a little time to posters once he was in his forties, after working for many years in various publications--mainly humor and fashion magazines--and in decorative design. Tosa Mitsuoki was a Japanese painter, reinvigorating the Yamato style of classical Japanese painting. Yamato-e originated from interest in reproducing early Tang dynasty paintings, and was later reinvented and further refined to fit Japanese cultural perceptions in the late Heian period. Yamato, sometimes referred to as wa or kazu had become synonymous with the Tosa-ha by the Muromachi period as a way for Japanese artist to distinguish their works from those of mainland Chinese paintings, kara-e. Yamato-e incorporated various visual and literary techniques for establishing narrative. Works were not always accompanied with text and may rely on heavily on period specific visual motifs, icons, and symbols to relay a story or theme. Tosa style by the time of Mitsuoki focused heavily on depicting themes of plants and nature, famous places, meisho, the four seasons, shik, bird-and-flower, kacho. Many of these popular symbols and icons from mimicking Chinese practices, treating the original Chinese masterwork as a sort of prototype to improve upon. Popular formats for Mitsuoki's pictures were wall scrolls kakemono, or handscrolls that would be read from right to left with the accompanied story, sliding doors fusuma and folding screen panels byobu that featured up to six panels. Mitsuoki's style incorporated the depth and calligraphy techniques of ink wash brushwork similar to Song dynasty and Yuan dynasty Chinese court paintings...

FRANK W. BENSON (1862-1951)
Frank Weston Benson, well known for his American impressionist paintings, also produced an incredible body of prints - etchings, drypoints, and a few lithographs. Born and raised on the North Shore of Massachusetts, Benson, a natural outdoorsman, grew up sailing, fishing, and hunting. From a young age, he was fascinated with drawing and birding – this keen interest continued throughout his life.
His first art instruction was with Otto Grundman at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, and then in 1883 in Paris at the Academie Julian where he studied the rigorous ‘ecole des beaux arts’ approach to drawing and painting for two years.

Graham Sutherland was a painter of imaginative landscapes, still life, figure pieces and portraits.
He was born on 24 August 1903 in London. He abandoned a railway engineering apprenticeship after a year and studied at Goldsmiths' College School of Art, where he specialized in engraving and etching. Sutherland's formative influences on his early work were Blake, Samuel Palmer, the late Turner, Paul Nash and Henry Moore. He held his first and second exhibitions of drawings and engravings at the XXI Gallery, London, in 1925 and 1928. and was a member of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers from 1926-33.
Sutherland taught engraving at the Chelsea School of Art from December 1926 and composition and book illustration 1935 to July 1940. He exhibited at the N.E.A.C. 1929-33 and with the London Group from 1932 (member 1936-7), experimenting with painting in oils from 1930 until, in 1935, the year after his first visit to Pembrokeshire, he decided to become a painter. He participated in the International Surrealist Exhibition in London 1936 and had his first one-man exhibition of oil paintings, mainly Welsh landscapes, at the Paul Rosenberg and Helft Gallery 1938.
As an Official War Artist 1941-4 he painted scenes of bomb devastation and of work in mines and foundries. Sutherland's first New York exhibition was at the Buchholz Gallery 1946, and in the same year he completed the 'Crucifixion' for St Matthew's Church, Northampton. He taught painting at Goldsmiths' College as a visiting instructor and since 1947 worked for several months each year on the French Riviera. He was a trustee of the Tate Gallery 1948-54. Painted the portrait of Somerset Maugham 1949, the first of a series which includes Lord Beaverbrook, Sir Winston Churchill and others. He completed the designs for the Coventry Cathedral tapestry, 'Christ in Glory in the Tetramorph', between 1954 and 1957 (installed 1962). Has also designed posters, ceramics, book illustrations, and ballet costumes and décor for The Wanderer 1940. Important retrospective exhibitions have been held at the I.C.A. 1951, the Venice Biennale and the Musée National d'Art Moderne, Paris, 1952, the Tate Gallery 1953, and at the São Paulo Bienal, Brazil, 1955. Awarded the O.M. 1960.
