In 1926, Knight moved with her foster family from their first home in St. Louis to Harlem, where her developing interest in the arts flowered in the creative atmosphere of the Harlem Renaissance. In Harlem, Knight became a daily participant in the workshop of sculptor Augusta Savage, in whom Knight found a mentor, and Savage's studio became a second home. Through Savage, Knight first came into contact with Claude McKay...

Exclusive Invitation Card to Andy Warhol Memorial Lunch from Estate of Tim Hunt
By Andy Warhol
Located in New York, NY
SUPER RARE!
Invitation Card to private Andy Warhol Memorial Lunch, from the Estate of Tim Hunt, 1987
Offset lithograph card
6 1/2 × 3 3/5 inches
Unframed
This exclusive invitation to the private memorial lunch for Andy Warhol is an historic collectors item. Few people in the world own this card other than those who were invited to the event and/or their heirs, though it has occasionally appeared at public auction now that another generation has passed. This offset lithograph invitation card to Andy Warhol's Memorial Lunch at the Diamond Horseshoe in the Paramount Hotel bears an image of Andy Warhol's iconic 1967 Marilyn on one side, and on the other side is an announcement that reads as follows:
ANDY WARHOL
A Memorial Lunch
Wednesday, April 1, 1987
The Diamond Horseshoe
235 West 46th Street
New York City
Special thanks to:
Carillon Importers
Caffe Condotti
Glorious Food
All leftover food and flowers will be donated to the homeless program at Church of the Heavenly Rest.
Marilyn - Andy Warhol 1967
The provenance of this card is impressive as it comes from the estate of Warhol Foundation curator and sales agent Tim Hunt, who was married to bestselling author Tama Janowitz, author of "Slaves of New York". Tama would describe how she met Tim Hunt as follows: "Andy Warhol died in 1987. In the long hot summer after, I bought a tiny basement apartment on West 70th Street over by West End Ave. That’s when I met Tim Hunt. A model for Werther’s Caramel and Ralph Lauren who’d gone to Oxford and had a brother who was a famous race car driver, he’d been with Christie’s a few years and had come over from England to work on the Warhol estate. He would later become my husband. Andy would have loved Tim. But the two had never met..."
The event in this invitation is the more exclusive Memorial Lunch on April 1st 1987, held prior to Warhol's Memorial Mass at St. John the Divine, later that evening, the latter of which was attended by thousands of people. The press referred to this earlier event as a "Special Memorial Lunch Party" - using the vernacular of the day, as everything in the mid to late 1980s seemed like a party - until it was not. Interestingly, no start time, or even time range, is mentioned on this invitation - something that is rarely if ever missing from such an item; further evidence that it wasn't enough just to get this card; one had to already be in the know to be able to attend. Either that, or the lunch party was going on all day - so invitees could show up whenever they wanted. Or, alternatively, it was simply an accidental omission with no hidden message. And another side note: one of the sponsors of this Memorial luncheon, Carillon Importers, is the holding company or importer for Absolut Vodka, which commissioned Andy Warhol to create a series of advertising ads that would comprise one of the most successful, award-winning advertising campaigns of the era - and the most successful of the company's history. Who attended this event? Probably everybody who was anybody in the nexis of art, celebrity, high fashion and big business. Getty images features photographs by celebrity paparazzo Ron Galella of some of Warhol pals entering or leaving the Diamond Horseshoe for this exclusive event including Dianne Brill...

The House of Shango — African American artist
Located in Myrtle Beach, SC
Samella Sanders Lewis, 'The House of Shango', lithograph, 1992, edition 60. Signed, dated, titled, and numbered '31/60' in pencil. A superb, richly-inked impression, on Arches cream wove paper; the full sheet with margins (1 1/4 to 3 1/2 inches), in excellent condition. Image size 24 x 18 inches (610 x 457 mm); sheet size 30 inches x 22 1/4 inches (762 x 565 mm). Archivally matted to museum standards, unframed.
ABOUT THIS WORK
“The title of this piece is an unmistakable harkening to African roots. Shango is a religious practice with origins in Yoruba (Nigerian) belief, deifying a god of thunder by the same name. Shango has been adopted in the Caribbean, most notably in Trinidad and Tobago, a fact that underscores the importance of transnationalism to Samella Lewis’s piece. Her work often grapples with issues of race in the U.S., and The House of Shango is no exception. Through a reliance on the gradual transformation of Shango—one that took place across continents and time—Lewis’s piece forms a powerful link between black Americans and their African and Caribbean counterparts. The figure depicted in the piece appears to emerge, quite literally, from the house of Shango. Given the roots and transformative process of the religion, The House of Shango can draw attention to the historical intersections to which black American culture is indebted.” —Laura Woods, Scripps College, Ruth Chander Williamson Gallery, Collection Highlights, 2018
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Samella Lewis’ lifelong career as an artist, art historian, critic, curator, collector, and advocate of African American art has helped empower generations of artists in the United States and worldwide, earning her the designation “the Godmother of African American art.”
Born and raised in Jim Crow era New Orleans, Lewis began her art education at Dillard University in 1941, transferring to Hampton University in Virginia, where she earned her B. A. and master's degrees. She completed her master's and a doctorate in art history and cultural anthropology at Ohio State University in 1951, becoming the first female African American to earn a doctorate in fine art and art history.
Lewis taught art at Morgan State University while completing her doctorate. She became the first Chair of the Fine Arts Department at Florida A&M University in 1953. That same year Lewis also became the first African American to convene the National Conference of African American artists held at Florida A&M University. She was a professor at the State University of New York, California State University, Long Beach, and at Scripps College in Claremont, California. Lewis co-founded, with Bernie Casey, the Contemporary Crafts Gallery in Los Angeles in 1970. In 1973, she served on the selection committee for the exhibition BLACKS: USA: 1973 held at the New York Cultural Center.
Samella Lewis's 1969 catalog 'Black Artists on Art', featured accomplished black artists typically overlooked in mainstream art galleries. She said of the book, "I wanted to make a chronology of African American artists, and artists of African descent, to document our history. The historians weren't doing it. It was really about the movement."
From the 1960s through the 1970s, her work, which included lithographs, linocuts, and serigraphs, reflected her concerns with the values of human dignity, democracy, and freedom of expression. Between 1969 and 70, Lewis and E.J. Montgomery were consultants for a groundbreaking exhibition at the Oakland Public L designed to create greater awareness of African American history and art.
Lewis was the founder of the International Review of African American Art in 1975. In 1976, she founded the Museum of African-American Art with a group of artistic, academic, business, and community leaders in Los Angeles, California. Lewis, the museum’s senior curator, organized exhibitions and developed new ways of educating the public about African American art. She celebrated African American art as an 'art of experience’ inspired by the artists’ lives. And she espoused the concept of African American art as an 'art of tradition', urging museums to explore the African roots of African American art. In 1984, Lewis produced an extensive monograph on Elizabeth Catlett, her beloved mentor at Dillard University.
Lewis has been collecting art since 1942, focusing primarily on the WPA era and work created during the Harlem Renaissance. Pieces from her collection were acquired by the Hampton University Museum in Virginia, the world’s earliest collection of African American fine art...

Mother and Children
By Edna Hibel
Located in San Francisco, CA
This artwork "Mother and Children" c.1970, is a colors lithograph on paper by American artist Edna Hibel, 1917-2014. It is signed and numbered II 3/10 Ed. 200 in pencil by the artist. The The artwork (sheet ) size is 34 x 23 inches, framed size is 40 x 29 inches. Custom framed in original wooden decorated grey/silver frame. It is in excellent condition.
About the artist:
Edna Hibel, a painter of sentimental pictures of children, has had a more than 60-year career as painter and lithographer and promoter of peace through exhibitions of her artwork.
She was born in 1917 in Boston, Massachusetts. Her parents were Abraham and Lena Hibel, and she was raised in the Boston area and educated at Brookline High School where she met her future husband, Theodore Plotkin.
She began to paint when she was nine years old and learned watercolor during summers at the shore where her family vacationed in Maine and Hull, Massachusetts.
Hibel studied at the Boston Museum School of Fine Arts, from 1935-39, receiving a Sturtevant Traveling Fellowship to Mexico. In Boston, in 1966, she began lithography, continuing in 1970 in Zurich, where she still works every year. She has created lithographic works with up to 32 stones (or colors) on paper, silk, wood veneer and porcelain. The latter pieces are called lithographs on porcelain and result from a complicated process, that she keeps a secret, whereby she transfers stone lithographic color separations onto Bavarian hard paste porcelain. Hibel has created the "Arte Ovale" series and various plaques with this technique.
She organized the Edna Hibel Museum of Art, in Jupiter, Florida, to display and promote her work and also created a United Nations stamp, "Mother Earth."
In 1995, she was commissioned by the Foundation of the U.S. National Archives to commemorate the 75th anniversary of women receiving the universal right to vote. At the ceremony, Ms. Lucy Baines Johnson referred to Hibel as the "Heart and Conscience of America."
In November, 2001, the World Cultural Council based in Mexico City gave her the Leonardo da Vinci World Award of Arts.
Hibel's work has been exhibited in museums and galleries in more than 20 countries including Russia, Brazil, China, Costa Rica, and the United States, and under the royal patronage of Count and Countess Bernadotte of Germany, Count Thor Bonde of Sweden, Prince and the late Princess Rainier of Monaco and Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II of England.
Pope John Paul II gave her a medal of honor as did the late Belgian King Baudouin. She also received honorary Doctoral degrees including from Eureka College, and Northwood University of Florida, Michigan and Texas. She also has received many humanitarian honors for her charitable efforts for children's and medical charities.
Her exhibitions "Golden Bridge" and " Peace Through Wisdom" were efforts to promote peace and cultural understanding between China, the United States, Yugoslavia and Russia, and a television documentary titled "Hibel's Russian Palette" was based on her trips and art shows in Leningrad, now St. Petersburg. In 2001, Edna received a Lifetime Achievement Award from "Women in the Visual Arts," an organization of artists in the South Florida area.
