The Sanmon Gate, Chionin's entrance gate, standing 24 meters tall and 50 meters wide, it is the largest wooden temple gate in Japan and dates back to the early 1600s. Behind the gate, a broad set of stairs leads to the main temple grounds. ABOUT THE ARTIST Painter and printmaker Yoshida Hiroshi (1876-1950) is regarded as one of the greatest artists of the Japanese 'shin hanga' (New Print) movement. Yoshida was born as the second son of Ueda Tsukane in Kurume, Fukuoka Prefecture, a schoolteacher from an old samurai family. In 1891 he was adopted by his art teacher Yoshida Kasaburo in Fukuoka and took his surname. In 1893 he went to Kyoto to study painting, and the following year to Tokyo to join Koyama Shotaro's Fudosha private school; he also became a member of the Meiji Fine Arts Society. These institutions taught and advocated Western-style painting, greatly influencing Yoshida’s artistic development. These continued somewhat sadly beyond those of most of his friends— into the debacle of the first World War, during which he died in 1917. Judging by the frequency with which he used them as models, he must have had an especial admiration for the ballet girls who followed a profession that at the time brought none of the glory and prosperity which attend it today. New aspects of the human body, revealed in movement, fascinated him. But his occupation with the simply anatomical side of his subjects never resulted in a cold interpretation. On the contrary there is a warmth and sympathy that pervades all of his work. The drawings here represent the painter in one important phase of his multi-sensitive view of life; and permit an insight which a more ambitious work might not do-into the operation of the creative process, the artist's transformation of reality as it passes through the mesh of his sensibilities. Luigi Bartolini Cupramontana (Ancona), 1892 – Rome 1963 An accomplished Twentieth Century Italian engraver, painter, writer, art critic and engraver. He spent his early years living in Rome, Siena, and Florence and was professionally formed through university courses in art and medicine, museums, and the Academy Belle Arti. He begins to study art in 1912 with a special preference for Goya, Rembrandt, and Fattori. His success as an engraver arrives in 1924 with his exhibitions at Bragaglia’s House of Art and Casa Palazzi di Roma (70 etchings). In 1925 he participates in the II Roman Biennial and then in the Venice Biennial from 1928 to 1936. He is considered, along with Morandi, the greatest Italian engraver. His expositive work continues with intensity in the post-war period with one-man exhibitions in both Italy and abroad. His last one-man exhibition takes place at the XXXI Venice Biennial and at the National Chalcography in Rome in 1962. Bartolini lives through his era in complete liberty, dedicating himself to painting, to art criticism, to literature and teaching. Rubin Zelicovici (later Reuven Rubin) was born in Gala?i to a poor Romanian Jewish Hasidic family. He was the eighth of 13 children. In 1912, he left for Ottoman-ruled Palestine to study art at Bezalel Academy of Art and Design in Jerusalem. Finding himself at odds with the artistic views of the Academy's teachers, he left for Paris, France, in 1913 to pursue his studies at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts. At the outbreak of World War I, he was returned to Romania, where he spent the war years.
