About the artist.
Samuel V. Chamberlain was born in Cresco, IA on October 28, 1895 and died in Marblehead, MA in 1975. He was an accomplished etcher, lithographer, writer, teacher, and lecturer. Chamberlain taught at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and lectured on various graphic techniques such as etching, drypoint, and soft ground etching. From 1929 to 1934 he lived in France.
Chamberlain's education took place at the University of Washington in Seattle, WA; the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, MA; and the Royal College of Art in London. He was a pupil of Edouard Henri Léon (1873-?) in Paris and Malcolm Osborne (1880-1963) in London. Chamberlain was a member of the National Academy of Design in New York City; the Society of American Etchers in Brooklyn, NY; the American Academy of Arts and Sciences; the Chicago Society of Etchers; Associate member of the National Academy of Design, 1939; the Northwest Printmakers; the Société de la Gravure Originale Noir in Paris; and a Guggenheim Fellow, 1926.
Exhibitions and awards include an honorable mention at the Paris Salon in 1925; medaille de Bronze at the Paris Salon in 1925; a gold medal at the Boston Tercentenary in 1930; a prize at the Society of American Etchers in 1933; the National Academy of Design, annually; and the Salons of America.
Chamberlain was the author and illustrator of "France Will Live Again," 1940; "Fair is Our Land," 1942; "Sketches of Northern Spanish Architecture," 1928; "Domestic Architecture in Rural France," 1928; "Tudor Homes of England," 1929; "Through France with a Sketch Book," 1929; and French Provincial Houses," 1932.

Samuel Chamberlain
Samuel V. Chamberlain, printmaker, photographer, author, lecturer, and teacher was born in Cresco, Iowa on October 28, 1895. His family moved to Aberdeen, Washington in 1901 and, in 1913, Chamberlain enrolled in the University of Washington in Seattle where he studied architecture under Carl Gould. By 1915, he was enrolled in the School of Architecture of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Boston. With the United States' involvement in the First World War, Chamberlain sailed to France where he volunteered in the American Field Service. In 1918, he was transferred to the United States Army to complete his tour of duty. After the war, he returned to Boston and resumed his architectural studies, which he eventually discontinued and tried for a few years to work as a commercial artist. Chamberlain received the American Field Service Scholarship in 1923, which he used to travel in Spain, North Africa, and Italy. In 1924 he was living in Paris and in the spring he studied lithography with Gaston Dorfinant and in the autumn and winter months, he studied etching and drypoint with Edouard Léon. He published his first etching the following year. In 1927, he studied drypoint with Malcolm Osborne at the Royal College of Art in London. He taught part-time at the School of Architecture, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor; and the School of Architecture, Massachusetts Institute of Technology between his travels abroad. Chamberlain eventually settled for a dozen years in France. He authored and sometimes co-authored, with his wife Narcissa, Domestic Architecture of Rural France, Clementine in the Kitchen, New England Rooms 1639-1863, and Charleston Interiors. Chamberlain was a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the American Institute of Architects, the American Society of the French Legion of Honor, the Boston Camera Club, the Boston Printmakers, the Chicago Society of Etchers, Photographic Society of America, the Print Club of Albany, the Society of American Etchers, and was elected an Academician in the National Academy of Design. His work is represented in the collections of the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Library of Congress, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the National Academy Museum, the Harvard Art Museums, the Carnegie Museum of Art, the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, and the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. Samuel V. Chamberlain died in Marblehead, Massachusetts on January 10, 1975.

Cecil Charles Windsor Aldin RBA (28 April 1870 - 6 January 1935) was a British artist and illustrator best known for his paintings and sketches of animals, sports, and rural life.
Born in Slough, he was educated at Eastbourne College and Solihull Grammar School. He studied anatomy at South Kensington and animal painting under William Frank Calderon. He lived at The Abbots, Sulhamstead Abbots from 1913 to 1914 and was church warden of St Mary's church.
Early influences included Randolph Caldecott and John Leech. His drawings first made their way into print in The Building News of 12 September 1890, and began to appear throughout many popular journals and magazines; his work was published in The Graphic in 1891.
His illustrations include two of the original 1894 magazine publications of stories from Rudyard Kipling's The Second Jungle Book, the 1910 edition of Charles Dickens' The Pickwick Papers and The Bunch Book (1932, about Bunch, a Sealyham Terrier) by James Douglas. He also published a short series of fully illustrated books in 1923, Old Manor Houses and Old Inns.
His village scenes and rural buildings were executed in chalk, pencil and wash sketching was used for country scenes. Aldin was an enthusiastic sportsman and a Master of Fox Hounds and many of his pictures illustrated hunting.
An early work on a tiger in a zoo was studied from life, but found to be a copyright of the ideas in a photograph by Gambier Bolton.
A popular book by Aldin was Sleeping Partners, a sequence of pastel drawings of his dogs on a couch. It included his Irish Wolfhound Micky and his favorite model, Cracker, a Bull Terrier with a dark patch over one eye.
He also did some work for Cadburys advertising.
