Provenance: From the artist's studio
Sonal is a storyteller. Her primary medium of choice is printmaking, exquisite etchings whose protagonists jump off the page to tell their stories. Like all good narratives that lucidly roll from one tale to the other the artist works in series. Be it her Kissa Goi or her new Vachik stories, each work comprises of many parts, all fitting together as one large work, or, equally as pleasing, as individual works that may or may not speak to each other in any combination of pattern. Sonal lives and works in Lucknow, in India, the City famous for its tradition of Ghazal poetry. In past times the poems were displayed in Diwan's (illustrated books) a calligrapher and artist would be commissioned to illustrate the poems. Sonal references these traditions and we can see traces of this in her contemporary images. Ghazal's delight and employ elements of playfulness, anecdote and surprise. They take their audience on a bitter-sweet journey and Sonal invites us to do the same.
The artist explains that in the evenings the women gather on the roof terraces of her town to tell the tales that are passed from the older generations to the younger women. These are stories that primarily revolve around the woman and their everyday role in a patriarchal society. These tales become mixed with the contemporary, both local and global events that effect the lives of the women. At first glance there is an anecdotal quality to the visual narratives but look a little longer and you will be rewarded by layer upon layer of meaning. Through the clever use of text and images of objects which may at first appear to be dislocated, each part of the image pulls together the narrative, expanding it into many different levels.
In Sonal's own words,
'This work is very close to my heart, a lot of emotions are attached to this work. Some such feelings that awakened for the first time and they were priceless. I have lived that time, felt it very closely, whatever happened to me at that time, I have tried my best to make it work.
Kajal has a very important role, when there are children and grandmothers complete it, it is said that by applying Kajal in the eyes of the children, the eyes become bigger. Which we call Nazarota which is a small iron vessel.
Kashmiri shawls are my mother's favorite shawl. Whenever we say this to her, we will take it, she used to say no, I will not give it to anyone, you will spoil it. After mother's departure, my sister wore it in her wedding, it seemed that mother is the same. My sister That algae has to be preserved a lot.
Litchi is my favorite fruit. If I see it in the market, I have to buy it, I cannot come without it, everyone says that my maternal grandfather has spoiled me a lot. Used to go and my grandfather used to tell the fruit seller to give fruit at two places and no one used to eat what was brought for me, I distribute everything but not litchi at all, I like it very much even today and probably always.
No matter who the "marriage" is, we start preparing for it well in advance. But this was the wedding of my house, first of my brother and then of my sister, there would have been a lot of preparations and a lot of tension as to how it would happen, who would do it, and then everything goes well. In marriages, the bridegroom is often garlanded with money, such a custom is very common in our Uttar Pradesh and I think on that day the groom looks towards the monkey, and the bride wins.
The stage is decorated with flowers, we keep looking for flaws in that too. We Indians have a habit of seeing flaws in everything. In the whole marriage, Harish is taken vedanshi in shawl, he says that there is no complete photo of me.
There was a moment in the wedding when everyone together takes the bride's bracelet and at that moment it felt as if we have grown up. Mothers have special importance in marriages, no one can fulfill the lack of mother, mother had planted chrysanthemum tree in our house, now it has grown very big, whenever something new happens, go and stand near that tree. When she goes, it seems that she is the mother.
Everyone says that ever since the Vedi came to our house, the pigeon has laid 16 to 17 eggs at our place till now. We all call the vedi as big sister, she is the big sister of all these pigeons, whenever new eggs are seen, we go many times to see, everything is fine. We have got Tripal installed so that everything is fine, some people say that it is good for pigeons to come in the house, some people say that pigeons do not leave quickly and do a lot of filth. But we think they would feel safe here, so they come again and again to lay eggs.
All of us worship according to our faith. When a new child is born in the house, both the mother and the child are kept together and worshiped, keeping in mind the different days of each state. It is said that this worship was done for 11 days in our place, it is believed that both mother and child become pure and women can again go to the temple, worship, apply vermilion on the forehead, take a bath, Means it becomes completely pure, in this Ghori ji and Ganesh ji were made from cow dung and are worshiped with vermilion. In this, looking at the Sun God, he is also worshipped. Mahavar is also applied to the feet, I think we all should not forget our civilization because this is our heritage.
My mother had a habit of keeping things in order, she used to keep the smallest things very carefully. After mother's departure, my sister kept everything very carefully. My mother loved small children very much. I had bought a very cute sweater and when my sister got it, she gave it to me.
I think the day he came to my house, the beginning of Vedu's coming was because Vedu's coming is a miracle for us and it was not going to happen without mother's blessings, maybe that's why my sister gave him to me, maybe mom Must have taken it for me only.
When there are children, they are put on eyes to protect them from the evil eye, and according to different customs in every state, there are different eyes, it is said that when children are small, they get lost in their old life and according to that We cry, laugh, sometimes get scared, to remove the same fear, we wear eyes, to avoid the evil eye, a silver knife is worn, Sun God, Moon, Alas {for evil eye} all these are silver. and is worn in black thread around the neck of the Pirs.
Everyone likes to stay at home and rest, when heard that everything is going to be closed and such a disease has come, the name of which is feared even today, it was a very bad time. In the beginning, everyone spent that time happily at home, cooked good food, ate a lot, watched television together and the most famous serial "Ramayana", which is fun to watch together, refreshes the old memories.
We did yoga because we had to fight the disease and doing yoga was the best treatment, it also made a good habit a part of our life.
After Vedu's birth, we both learned a lot, some learned on our own, some people taught us. One of them was teething of children, it is said that when children's teeth come out, then children suffer a lot, so many home remedies are also done, calcium medicines are given which are not prescribed by doctors, The people of the neighborhood who give their lives while walking, tell the same thing, and this goes on generation after generation and this medicine is very effective too. After Vedu was born, both of us together tried to make a whole forest on one wall, which could not be completed till date due to paucity of time.
There was a time when I used to see everyone driving four and used to think when will we have a car and when will I drive. But when it happened, I learned that it was very easy, then I started driving in my brand new car, then it seemed that I do not know anything. Lest anything happens to our car, we drive the car as if we are riding a bicycle, and if our heart beats fast at that time, if someone measures the blood pressure, then we may have to take medicine for sure. And we keep remembering our favorite Lord Hanuman ji till we reach our destination.
Everyone's ears get stiff when they hear "potatoes" because everyone likes potatoes, you must have heard people saying that if you eat more potatoes, you will become like potatoes. What is the matter if we Indians get samosas with potatoes, then they do not go without eating samosas. In our Baniyas' place, no vegetable is cooked without potatoes. Whether you get something or not, you will always get boiled potatoes.
Some works are very close to heart like this work whenever me and my dear mother used to go to the market, mother's purse was always lost and when we used to find it, it was hidden in mother's armpit saree and my favorite sentence is "Mummy". You can't lose your purse, you won't leave it. Mother used to go out for the market, she used to get Susu and often this happened in front of grandmother's house, we used to stop and open the blue shutter of grandmother's house, then mother's eyes were very relaxed. Now I think, then mother used to go to talk to grandmother on the pretext of Susu, she used to get "aaj ki taza khabar".Mummy got me a tiffin and told me to take it now, then take more later and then that day never came. Mother had a habit of never saying no to anything, even if it was a small one, she would certainly give it.
My mother was very fond of films. And Harish remains very upset with me because of this fact that I am also there. When mummy was in twelfth standard she had n c c then she went to kashmir and Rajesh Khanna's film was being shot there mummy loved to make portraits so sitting there she prepared some portraits and during the shooting of the film she got Rajesh Khanna's portraits. also got autograph And mom was overjoyed, and as they do in movies, someone stole her autograph diary. What was it then, only memories were left with the mother, which she used to tell us often. Mother had a habit of never saying no to anything, even if it was a small one, she would certainly give it.
On the wedding day, many people understand the bridegroom in different ways. You do like this, and the milkmaid would have been in tension, walking like a lion and everyone would have stared at her, and the milkmaid would have been the king of marriage, her chest would have been to walk. All the ornaments that my mother has are very beautiful, they were made by my maternal grandfather from Jaipur, today it will be a bit difficult to get them, but the workmanship in the ornaments is really very beautiful.
Some boys are very choosy, if you go shopping with them, then they bother you. If we say what are boys, whatever they wear, they look good and get ready quickly, but I have done this work in my house. I have never seen boys who have small or thin shoulders taking overcoats and if they ever get a coat of their size, they would be so happy as if a wish has been answered.
The feeling of the first time is very unique and it happens to everyone, when we washed small clothes and dried them on the stand, then I felt something different and I was feeling happy in my heart. Colored clothes. The biggest talking point in the house is these clothes from Nani's side and these clothes came from Dadi's side.
When you are in trouble, you forget where you are, what you are wearing, whether someone is watching you or not, you do not remember anything. Something similar happened with me, I wore the kurta upside down in the whole function and I didn't even know because I was in trouble, when I remembered it was too late and someone told me something interesting or didn't even interrupt, maybe all today They have become so busy in themselves that they do not care about anyone. Or today's fashion separates everyone.'

Sonal Varshneya Ojha
Sonal Varshneya Ojha is an exciting young artist from India. Born in 1985 in Agra, she now works from a studio in Lucknow. With a Masters Degree in the Visual Arts from Agra University, Sonal’s work has been shown at major International Art Fairs such as the last Edition of the India Art Fair in 2020 in New Delhi. The artist will be exhibiting at the forthcoming India Art Fair in April 2022. She has enjoyed success with major Galleries worldwide and at the beginning of 2022 she was selected for the CIMA Emerging Art Awards. Sonal is a storyteller. Her primary medium of choice is printmaking, exquisite etchings whose protagonists jump off the page to tell their stories. Like all good narratives that lucidly roll from one tale to the other the artist works in series. Be it her Kissa Goi or Emoticons series, each work comprises of many parts, all fitting together as one large work, or, equally as pleasing, as individual works that speak to each other in any combination of pattern. Likewise the artist works in watercolour on paper although these works are more individual and less part of a particular set. The artist explains that in the evenings the women gather on the roof terraces of her town to tell the tales that are passed down. Through the clever use of text and images of objects which may at first appear to be dislocated, the artist pulls together the narrative, expanding it into many different levels. Sonal’s is a very specific language, one which merges pop culture with traditional imagery. However there is nothing parochial about the artist’s work which places these local tales into her understanding of society at large and within a global context. Sonal Varshneya Ojha’s work is in many important collections. The artist was part of a recent show at Palette Art Gallery in Delhi, Collective 22 alongside some of India’s leading artists. Over the past two years she has exhibited in many shows across the Sub-Continent. In July 2021 Sonal was part of a show at MOSA in Belgium. In January 2022 she was selected for the CIMA Emerging Artist Award In India. She will be exhibiting at the India Art Fair in April 2022.
