Description: From the suite "The Mother of All Us"
About the artist:
Robert Indiana was born in New Castle, Indiana, in 1928. His family name was Clark but he adopted the name of his native state early in his career. His father worked for a Phillips 66 gas station and his mother ran a diner. He began his studies in art in 1945 at the Herron School of Art in Indianapolis and then at the Munson-Williams-Proctor Institute in Utica, New York. He then moved to Chicago and continued his studies at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He also studied at the Skowhgan School of Painting and Sculpture in Maine, the Edinburgh College of Art and London University, eventually moving to New York City in 1956.
A major Pop Artist, his work is characterized by the use of words and relatively flat paint with no brush strokes. This cold and somewhat mechanical approach to painting in which the words are often stenciled into the design probably was influenced by street signs, pinball machines, the commercial stenciling process used in printing and advertisements. In fact, Indiana calls himself "a painter of signs". He uses the common everyday symbols and words of America and paints them as brilliantly colored pop art paintings. His work comments in an ironic fashion on American life and culture, often making pointed political statements about American society.
The words in his painting are usually simple and short words, sometimes with clear meaning and other times arranged in an ambiguous fashion to project multiple meanings, and occasionally involve puns. It is interesting to try to put his "words" together to get a sense of the meaning. For instance, in The Triumph of Tira, painted in, 1960-61, the artist presents four circles with four squares inside them and four stars inside the squares. There is one word in each star. The upper left says "Law"; the upper right says "Cat"; the lower left says "Men"; and the lower right says "Sex." Of course it is hard to understand the relationship between the words, and as you begin to speculate on what it might mean, a number of possible interpretations evolve.
Other works have more obvious meanings, sometimes political. One painting shows an outline of the State of Alabama with Selma marked in the right location. The words "Just as in the anatomy of man, every nation must have its hind part", are stenciled around the map. This is a reference to the march on Selma, which was an important event in the Civil Rights Movement during the 60's.
Indiana's most famous painting is of the word "Love". It is painted with the LO on the top and VE on the bottom. This painting was used as a design for an American postage stamp...

The Painter and the Model - Original Lithograph by Mario Russo - 1988
By Mario Russo
Located in Roma, IT
Image dimensions: 40x60 cm.
The painter and the model is an original colored lithograph on paper realized by the Italian artist Mario Russo (1925-2000)
A beautiful original print representing the painter portraying an elegant woman with a big hat (she has something of the Fellinian actress) and remembering the academy lesson of drawing and the Classical Greek examples of beauty, is hand-signed in pencil by the artist on the lower right margin. Realized with a fresh line and transmitting the natural fascination towards the female beauty and world, this lithograph is numbered in pencil on lower left margin, a fine specimen from an edition of 150 prints.
In very good condition and demonstrating a good inking, except for a light foxing along the margins, this is a really fine contemporary artwork able to adapt to each kind of furniture!
Mario Russo (1925 - 2000)
The Neapolitan artist moved to Rome, Trastevere, in 1950: in these years began to exihibit in Italy and abroad. In 1953 he stays in Paris, in 1960 in London with his own exhibition. Another exhibition in Monaco of Bavaria in 1965: three years later, in 1968, held two exhibitions in New York and accepted the invitation to exhibit his works at the Royalton College in 1970 Vermont. In 1970 he is enchanted from Sardinia and then decide to live there four months every year.
His master is conquered by the sense of beauty, which is synonymous of female body pervaded sensuality. In 1977, during a stay in Canada, obtains new ideas on the man-machine relationship, always inherent in his paintings. In 1979 he was invited by the Italian Institute of Culture of Toronto to exhibit his works at Sudbury University. In 1981 in Florence, he is impressed by the Riace...

Jean Cocteau, Untitled, from The White Book, 1930
By Jean Cocteau
Located in Southampton, NY
This exquisite lithograph and pochoir with hand coloring by Jean Cocteau (1889–1963), titled Sans titre (Untitled), from the album Le Livre blanc (The White Book), precede dun frontispice et accompagne de 17 dessins de Jean Cocteau (preceded by a frontispiece and accompanied by 17 drawings by Jean Cocteau), originates from the 1930 edition published by Editions du Signe, Paris, printed by Maitres-Imprimeurs, Ducros et Colas, Paris, and hand colored by M.B. Armington (a probable pseudonym of Jean Cocteau), May 10, 1930. The work reflects Cocteaus mastery of linear elegance and psychological nuance, distilling intimacy, vulnerability, and symbolic clarity into a composition that occupies a pivotal place in early twentieth-century modernism and queer cultural history.
Executed as a lithograph and pochoir with hand coloring on velin d'Arches paper, this work measures 11.81 x 9.06 inches. Unsigned and unnumbered, as issued. The edition exemplifies the refined craftsmanship of Ducros and Colas, Maitres-Imprimeurs, and the exceptional hand-coloring attributed to Cocteau himself.

Before he decided to truly pursue painting, Bragg was a cab driver, a truck driver, a stand-up comedian, and a factory worker. When he arrived in California, he began painting for the wealthy and even gave lessons. It was during this time that he began to develop satirical feelings for the upper-class he was painting.

Roland Topor (January 7, 1938 – April 16, 1997), was a French illustrator, painter, writer, filmmaker and actor, known for the surreal nature of his work. He attended the School of Fine Arts in Paris (1955-1964).

Totally tragic, absurd and grotesque , the humor he disseminates evokes more the one of Central Europe. All his creations from the beginning till the end remain provocative and bizarre.
He is mainly known as an illustrator and graphic artist and famous for combining surrealism with black humor.
Abram Topor, father of the artist came to settle in Paris in 1930 thanks to a grant from the Warsow Arts Academy. In his young age during the war, he and his family will stay for a while in Savoie trying to escape Nazis.
In 1962 he created the Panic Movement (mouvement panique), together with Alejandro Jodorowsky and Fernando Arrabal. Topor wrote the novel "The Tenant" (1964), which was filmed by Roman Polanski as The Tenant
