About the Item

RED HORSE on HOT PINK THREE GEISHAS is an original lithograph on archival Somerset printmaking paper, 100% acid free by the renowned Chinese born artist Walasse Ting (DING XIONGQUAN, Chinese, 1929-2010). Ting's use of bold colors and expressive calligraphic brush drawn forms convey vivid life energy. He is well known for his colorful images of women, flowers, fish, parrots and horses and was associated with artists Karel Appel, Asger Jorn, and Pierre Alechinsky, members of the avant-garde group called COBRA. Throughout his artistic life, Ting imbued his passion and spirit into his paintings, poetry and sculpture. RED HORSE on HOT PINK THREE GEISHAS is a freely expressed Chinese Ink Brush drawing of three colorfully robed women, wearing grass green, bright blue, and magenta pink colored kimonos, one woman holding two colorful parrots, all with tropical flower blossoms in their dark hair, a large red horse with a red violet mane and tail stands beside them set on a vibrant hot pink background. Print size - 21.5" x 28.5" Image size - 17.5" x 23.5" unframed, excellent condition, pencil signed by Walasse Ting Edition size - 200, plus proofs Year published - 1981 Printer - J K Fine Art Editions Co. NY About the Artist - Walasse Ting was born in Shanghai, China in 1929. In 1953 Walasse moved to Paris where he met contemporary artists such as Pierre Alechinsky, Asger Jorn and Karel Appel. While in Paris he also became affiliated with the artistic group COBRA, which was formed by Appel, Jorn and others to promote the avant-garde art movement. In 1963 he left Paris and resettled in New York City, and there he met other artists such as Sam Francis, Tom Wesselman and Claes Oldenberg. During the 1960s, Walasse's style developed from one of expressionism to pop-art, often depicting nude women painted in bright, vibrant color schemes. In 1970 Walasse won the Guggenheim Fellowship Award for drawing. He shared a studio with Vivian Springford, and they had a clear influence on each other’s work. He is the author of thirteen books, including All in My Head (1974), and his most celebrated work, One Cent Life (1964), which contains 62 original lithographs made by 28 European and American artists, with 62 poems by Walasse Ting set in multi-colored inks. The 172-page collection was written by Walasse Ting and edited by Sam Francis. Among the more notable lithographs in the book include work by Walasse Ting, Pierre Alechinsky, Karel Appel, Joan Mitchell, and Andy Warhol. The book is considered a visual manifesto of 1960s culture. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Ting divided his time between Amsterdam and New York. After a long struggle with a brain injury, Walasse Ting died in New York in 2010. His work can be found in permanent international collections such as the Guggenheim Museum, the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Tate Modern Museum in London, Centre Pompidou in Paris, and the Hong Kong Museum of Art.

BACKYARD by the artist James Denmark is an original hand drawn, limited edition lithograph printed on archival Somerset paper, 100% acid free using traditional hand lithography techniques. Vivid coloration and textures captivate the eye with variety - deep violet, reds, fiery orange, touches of yellow, dark black and shades of blue - a very strong impression and fine example of hand lithography! The late 1980s was the height of the AIDS epidemic, and this was one of many efforts by the creative community to raise funds to assist in fighting this deadly scourge that disproportionately affected the artistic community. William Steen 1949-2008 William Steen, artist, collector, curator, and mystic, died of pancreatic cancer on December 20 in New York, where he has lived since 2001. Baseball Game: realist large-scale black and white drawing of sports game
By Michele Zalopany
Located in New York, NY
This print depicts a baseball game mid-play. An umpire crouches with his hand up, and the batter stands poised. In the lower right, spectators peer onto the field. The awning of the stadium, silhouetted in black, cuts lines across the top of the composition, rising over a hillside crowded with homes. This finely-drawn lithograph features Zalopany's characteristic mastery of light and shadow, from the delicate texture of the field, to the spectators backlit in shadow. The composition of Baseball Game was taken from a page in an old picture book, depicting a downtown section of Caracas, Venezuela that is home to a number of Art Deco buildings, all built in the 1950's. Found images are a regular inspiration for Zalopany's large-scale realism. This print calls additionally on Zalopany's regular depiction of nature contrasted with the man-made: here, a behemoth stadium rises beside rolling hills, themselves punctuated with more buildings than trees. This contrast is enhanced by the use of textured, delicate handmade paper, which lends warmth to this dramatic black-and-white drawing. Image 37.5 x 28 in. / 95.25 x 71.2 cm. Paper 51 x 36 in. / 131 x 93 cm. Lithograph on Korean kozo paper. Edition 70. Signed by the artist lower right in pencil, numbered lower center in pencil. Born in 1955 in Detroit Michigan, Michele Zalopany is a contemporary American artist best known for her large-scale watercolor and pastel paintings based on photographs found in digital picture collections, old books, and flea markets, etc. Found photographs and film screen shots that had originally served other purposes -- family snapshots, police photos...
