Bright Vibrant Pop Art Silkscreen NYC Abstract Expressionist
Located in Surfside, FL
Red Angel, intensely and seductively colored: swooning purples and reds, ecstatic lemon yellows, and black construction paper. Jostling shapes, geometric and biomorphic, lyrical and hard-edged, refuse to resolve neatly Assemblage, a bold strategy to keep viewers unsettled and curious, the reward for which are profuse and luscious details: varied incidents of refinement, suggestive signs, most in a private code, not merely ornamental but integral to the overall message. William Scharf (born 1927, Media, PA) is an American artist from New York, he teaches at The Art Students League of New York. Painting with acrylics, he was a member of the New York School movement. Often categorized as a late generation Abstract Expressionist, Known for producing paintings with abstract compositions incorporating biomorphic and geometric forms in vivid colors, the artist was influenced by Surrealism, the Color Field painters, and symbolism. He apprenticed with Mark Rothko and was influenced by his color field paintings. The surrealist painter Arshile Gorky and the Abstract expressionism style found in 1950s New York City also influenced Scharf. His exhibits include San Francisco Art Institute (1969), the Pepperdine University's Frederick R. Weisman Museum of Art (2001), and Richard York Gallery in New York City (2004). In the heyday of Abstract Expressionism, being serious meant following the tenets of the New York School, which required abstract paintings to be spontaneous improvisations, the messier the better. At once hedonistic and disciplined, his brazen paintings are nothing if not promiscuous. The best ones mix the dynamism of gestural abstraction with sensual rhythms of decorative patterning, sometimes souping up the stew with cartoonish symbols and flourishes so ripe they belong in a dandy's fantasies. His exhibits include San Francisco Art Institute (1969), the Pepperdine University's Frederick R. Weisman Museum of Art (2001) and Richard York Gallery in New York City (2004). Scharf's work has been exhibited in a number of galleries, including the Anita Shapolsky Gallery, Meredith Ward Fine Art, and Hollis Taggart Galleries in New York City. Scharf has been an instructor of art at various institutions including The Art Students League, the San Francisco Art Institute, and the School of Visual Arts in New York. He is a member of the Society of Illustrators and the Artists Equity Association. Folon Exhibition Poster, Galerie Charles Kriwin
Located in Surfside, FL
The Belgian artist Jean-Michel Folon was born in 1934 in Uccle, in the surroundings of Brussels. Although having made studies of architecture, he will be devoted very quickly to the drawing. He takes part, by its illustrations, with reviews and other periodicals ; he is considered a long time as cartoonist. Folon very early created a world which is clean for him into which an anonymous character seems to float or slip into an indefinite world, sometimes absurd. By the use of the color, its work takes a more pictorial turn towards the end of the Sixties. In 1969, its first personal show is organized in New York (Lefebre Gallery). In little time its universe is essential: covers of French and American newspapers...

Located in London, GB
To see our other original vintage travel posters including more pre-war London Transport posters, scroll down to "More from this Seller" and below it click on "See all from this Seller" - or send us a message if you cannot find the poster you want. Hans Schleger 'Zero' (1898-1976) London Transport Coach Stop Poster Screenprint poster c. 1970 16x20 cm Printed for London Transport These posters were designed to be used as temporary stops when the usual stop required amendment for instance owing to road works or similar events. Printed on paper they were designed to be posted up at the alternative site, possibly over a different sort of stop (bus stop, coach stop, request stop, etc.). Working with Edward Johnson's special typeface created for London Transport, Hans Schleger - or Zero as he signed himself - adopted the famous roundel used by London Underground for use at Bus Stops. Born in Germany, Schleger was an influential graphic designer. After serving during the First World War, he studied at the Berlin Kunstgewerbeschule, being taught by Emil Orlik. The same year Walter Gropius founded the Bauhaus at Weimar and Schleger learned the same principles of breaking down the barriers between architecture, design, fine art and craft. A firm believer in the Bauhaus principles of simplicity in design and reduction to essentials, these may be seen in the clean lines of the roundel. In 1924 he moved to New York, applying Modernism to American advertising, and then returned to Berlin in 1929 working for the British advertising...

Quilt or Persian Rug Serigraph Pattern and Decoration Feminist Lithograph Print
Located in Surfside, FL
Dee Shapiro is a Contemporary American artist and writer associated with the Pattern and Decoration movement. I have seen this referred to as Hejaz. Dee Shapiro was inspired to be an Artist in her early years of education. Dee's career started in the 1970s as a pattern painter with her works of art included in the Pattern and Decoration at P.S. 1 (other artists included Mary Grigoriadis, Valerie Jaudon, Joyce Kozloff, Robert Kushner, Kim MacConnel, Miriam Schapiro, Betty Woodman, Robert Zakanitch.) She researched and explored the Fibonacci Progression in color on graph paper and also explored geometric complexity of architectural designs, leading her to create the small horizontal oil paintings of cities and landscapes. Dee Shapiro became a Yaddo fellow in 2017. Dee Shapiro obtained her bachelor's degree in 1958 and Master of Science in 1960 from Queens College, City University of New York. Dee Shapiro is an artist that sees the subject on a large scale, but what she creates is on a diminutive scale. Shapiro's strength is the ability to give expressive power on canvas that makes her work seem larger than they are. Dee Shapiro has been a teacher, lecturer, and writer through career. "I have been concerned with women’s issues most of my life. I have worked to enhance the position of women in society through supporting the work of women artists. As a contributor to Heresies Magazine and a founder of a women’s cooperative gallery as well as developing a body of work that references women’s work and more currently focuses on female sexual imagery, I identify with feminist matters and affairs."
