About the Item
"When the Word is LOVE (Book of LOVE)" silkscreen print from a portfolio of 12 original poems and 12 original prints by artist Robert Indiana. Edition 58/200. The prints in the portfolio were created by Indiana as illustrations for his own love poems, written circa 1958 to 1973. Each poem has a highly raised embossment of LOVE just below the title and is hand-initialed in pencil by Robert Indiana. The poem reads: "When the Word is Love / Dent the head / With the word. / See the lettered scar / on the skull. / On the bone / [In the beginning] / The straight line / Wherefrom the rounding / Circle is Begat, / But, on our tongues / Never sat. / Yet see the jutting / Diags do, - /Ascendency inversed, / And in the final due, / Lo: the single stroke / Rampant three pronged / Trinity into Infinity."

Robert Indiana
Robert Indiana's work evolved into hard-edged graphic images of words, logos and typographic forms, earning him a reputation as one of the country's leading contemporary artists.
Indiana is known for using public signs and symbols with altered lettering to make stark and challenging visual statements. In his prints, paintings and constructions, he gave new meaning to basic words like Eat, Die and Love. Using them in bold block letters in vivid colors, he enticed his viewers to look at the commonplace from a new perspective. One indication of his success was the appearance of his immensely popular multi-colored Love on a United States postage stamp in 1973.

Clare Halifax graduated from the University of Loughborough in 2000 with a BA Hons in Printed Textile design and went on to sell her work internationally to the fashion and interior markets. In 2009 Clare Halifax completed an MA in Multi-disiciplinary printmaking at the University of the West of England, which saw her work develop into the production of limited edition prints and ceramic pieces.
