Andy Warhol’s Skulls from 1976 are part of the transition he began initially in 1972 with the Mao series – incorporating hand-drawn lines into the image – and with Ladies and Gentlemen and Mick Jagger in 1975 where he began the print process with his own photographs rather than appropriated ones. Additionally, in the 1975 prints, he began using collaged elements – torn paper, photographic elements, etc.

A regular at the Affordable Arts Fair, Gavin was one of 20 artists chosen to work alongside Film Four for an exhibition at Somerset House. His screen-prints often depict colourful, nostalgic images. Iconic designs which are humorous ornamentation and invite an opening for conversation. Gavin takes an original painting and creates many separate layers of half tones to screen-print by hand the final piece. Using this method he captures many textures and depths of colour within a piece of work.
He recently designed and created a piece of work for the charity Help Refugee's 'Choose Love' campaign in conjunction with Printclub and the celebrated designer Katharine Hamnett, highlighting the current plight of refugees.

“The ATO>MIC work started as an attempt to replicate the idea behind still life painting - where you are trying to reproduce the image of solid looking things, things that could be on a shelf. So, I wanted to try doing that with just using light instead of paints - however I soon started to see the similarities with Harold Edgerton’s famous atomic explosion photos and how the scale of my work could be switched between small items on a shelf to enormous atomic explosions.
That is the reason behind the strange title ATO>MIC - where the “>” is a kind of link between larger and smaller scales, between the two influencing ideas.” – Mike Jackson
The images may be reminiscent of the first milliseconds of atomic bomb explosions captured by Harold Edgerton's Rapatronic camera in the early 1950s but also visualise the thought of Maholy-Nagy’s bold visions in the Bauhaus’s movement toward the idea of the Gesamtkunstwerk, or “total work of art.”
The 3D concepts that were first expanded in the same art movement by El Lissitzky a hundred years ago, are also explored here by Jackson’s drowned thin line within the third of the image. In his vision, the line reflects a shelf with the object on top, by adding the weight to it, the gravity pushing them down.
Or maybe the thin line is just the horizon, where the enormous atomic blast took place…?
Beyond these flat forms of two dimensional ‘lumino-graphic’ works on paper, the purest form of photography (‘light drawing’) lays a visible path to three-dimensional imaginary world, realised in precise composition, rhythm and warm earthy tones of these works.
It’s up to the viewer to decide what they prefer to see and take with them.
As Wassily Kandinsky once said; “Imagination is what allows your mind to discover.”

A fine limited edition signed lithograph, 'Pot au Feu' by British artist Glynn Boyd Harte. The work is signed in pencil by the artist bottom right and numbered 12/125 (number 12 of 125) in pencil bottom left. Presented in a metal and wood frame under glass.
A fantastic colourful and amusing view of a group of ingredients for a 'pot au feu' (a traditional French stew) as well as a box of candied (glacé) fruits and a map of Paris and its suburbs all presented on a bright pink checked table cloth. Boyd Harte always brought an enormous amount of humour to his paintings and compositions, there are wonderful details and 'jokes' hidden in the details. A really wonderful work ideal for a kitchen or anywhere else it can be seen and admired in detail.
Glynn Boyd Harte 1948-2003 was an artist, illustrator, author, composer & pianist educated at St.Martin's School of Art and the Royal College of Art.

Harte was born in Rochdale, his father Herbert worked as a commercial artist and later teaching. He later transferred to St Martin's School of Art, where tutor Fritz Wegner encouraged him to move from black and white to colour. Still-life art, which includes work produced in media such as painting, photography, video and more, is a popular genre in Western art. However, the depiction of still life in color goes back to Ancient Egypt, where paintings on the interior walls of tombs portrayed the objects — such as food — that a person would take into the afterlife. Ancient Greek and Roman mosaics and pottery also often depicted food. Indeed, popular still-life prints often feature food, flowers or man-made objects. By definition, still-life art represents anything that is considered inanimate.
During the Middle Ages, the still life genre was adapted by artists who illustrated religious manuscripts. A common theme of these still-life paintings is the reminder that life is fleeting. This is especially true of vanitas, a kind of still life with roots in the Netherlands during the 17th century, which was built on themes such as death and decay and featured skulls and objects such as rotten fruit. In northern Europe during the 1600s, painters consulted botanical texts to accurately depict the flowers that were the subject of their work.
While early examples were primarily figurative, you can find still lifes that belong to different schools and styles of painting and printmaking, such as Cubism, Impressionism and contemporary art.
Leonardo da Vinci’s penchant for observing phenomena in nature and filling notebooks with drawings and notes helped him improve as an artist of still-life paintings. Vincent van Gogh, an artist who made a couple of the most expensive paintings ever sold, carried out rich experiments with color over the course of painting hundreds of still lifes, and we can argue that Campbell’s Soup Cans (1961–62) by Andy Warhol counts as still-life art.
Still-life art enthusiasts and collectors of Warhol prints have lots of reasons to love the cultural icon — when Warhol brought the image of a Campbell’s soup can out of the supermarket and into the studio, in 1961, he secured his legacy as a radical contemporary artist. After Warhol painted the soup cans, he realized that he could more readily achieve the mass-produced aesthetic he was seeking with silkscreens, also called screen-prints, and he began experimenting with silkscreening on canvas. He used the technique to print paintings of Coke bottles and dollar bills (both in 1962), as well as his treasured Brillo box sculptures (1964).
