Times Square, Susannah MacDonald
By Susannah MacDonald
Located in Fairfield, CT
Artist: Susannah MacDonald (1954) Title: Times Square Year: Circa 1990 Medium: Silkscreen on wove paper Size: 33 x 25 inches Edition: 96/375, plus proofs Condition: Excellent Inscription: Signed and numbered by the artist in pencil SUSANNAH MACDONALD (1954- ) A contemporary American artist. She began her career as a clothing designer and illustrator, and by the early 1990s she began experimenting with a truly unique method of printmaking. Using a combination of silk-screen and lithography on both paper and transparent sheets of mylar, her brightly colored three-dimensional scenes portray contemporary life in an unforgettable manner. McDonald's images are real and imaginary, and can be described as delightful visions. No matter the passage of fashion or the seasons, there are places of transcendent timelessness in her work. Her creation of places gives us a sense of home that is responsible for her public audience. ABOUT SELLER DO YOU HAVE ARTWORK TO SELL? 1935 Original Art Deco poster by Cassandre - Dubo, Dubon, Dubonnet
Located in PARIS, FR
"In triptych form, the mythical Dubo, Dubon, Dubonnet is in a way the ancestor of the animated gif! A simple, poetic visual narrative wrapped in a humorous tone. A silhouette darkens as the Dubo, Dubon, Dubonnet sequence progresses. Some say that it's these gestures and features that have given rise to our image of the aperitif. Cheers, Cassandra! Today, the Evin law would forbid this type of alcohol promotion, but that hasn't stopped this poster from becoming a cult image, taken up and quoted by every generation of graphic designers. Dubonnet is a brand of vermouth flavored mainly with cinchona, available in red and white. It was created by French chemist Joseph Dubonnet. It was in Paris, near the future site of the Garnier opera house, that Joseph Dubonnet developed his cinchona wine in 1846. To combat malaria, he developed this bitter-tasting medicine, which he masked with a strong-tasting decoction of herbs and spices. Soldiers in the Foreign Legion...

Leaf House
Located in Sante Fe, NM
Reviewing the photographs of Julie Blackmon, critic Leah Ollman of the Los Angeles Times wrote: “Each frame is an absorbing, meticulously orchestrated slice of ethnographic theater … that abounds with tender humor but also shrewdly subtle satire.” Blackmon is a native of Springfield, MO, and her photographs are inspired by her experience of growing up the oldest of nine children—including five sisters—in what she calls “a generic American town in the middle of the U.S.” In college, Blackmon was introduced to the work of artists Sally Mann, Diane Arbus, and Helen Levitt, and she describes herself as “obsessed” with their images. “When my three children were small,” she recalls, “we moved into an old house with a darkroom in the basement. Like any mother, I wanted to take pictures of my kids. But I didn’t want to be just the ‘mother photographer.’ I wanted my work to be more: more penetrating, more artful, more striking, more thoughtful, more a reflection of the times. “Over the next few years, I progressed from making documentary black and white photographs of my life and the lives of my sisters to creating colorful, fictitious images that offered a more fantastical look at everyday life. My work became more conceptual, as I began to realize that I was not obligated to capture “reality” exactly, but that I could work more like a painter or a filmmaker, actively shaping the images I was creating. This realization—that fiction can often capture the truth more memorably than reality—was a major shift in how I saw the world around me, and it transformed my work.” “It’s thrilling to see the most common aspects of everyday life as potential stories or themes for a photograph. It changes how you see things: suddenly, a Starbucks employee on a smoke break, or an outmoded beauty shop catering to an elderly clientele, can spark a memorable image. As Nora Ephron...

Children in a Boat
Located in San Francisco, CA
This artwork, "Children in a boat" 1976 in a color off set lithograph by renown Chinese/American artist Wai Ming A.K.A Lo Hing Kwok, b.1938. It is hand signed and inscribed A.P (Artist Proof) in pencil by the artist. The image size is 21.5 x 28.75 inches, sheet size is 32.5 x 39.5 inches. Custom framed in wood dark brown rustic frame and beige matting. It is in excellent condition About the artist: Wai Ming, was born in Canton, South China on November 11, 1938, the son of a school master with nine children. Extremely poor as a child, he was raised in Hong Kong enduring many hardships amidst a chaotic environment of war and refugee settlements. Wai Ming's love for art flourished and he developed his drawing techniques without any art education, just painting what he saw. In the 1960s, Ming found representation in Hong Kong and also took the unusual step of opening his own gallery to display his work in. His primary interest being to capture images of life in fishing villages, or 'fish-folk', who have retained traditional Chinese culture, his work was at home with the sensibilities of many art buyers in Hong Kong. Crossing the ocean in his mid-30s, Wai Ming arrived in San Francisco from Hong Kong in 1974. There, he experienced initial resistance from galleries and the official art world for a variety of reasons, but was ultimately embraced by dealer Jack Swanson...

Profils Horizontaux (20 men seated in a church, a hall, union or political?)
Located in New Orleans, LA
Viewers are always curious about this image. I count 20 people seated -- all men. Why? Three of the men are looking over their shoulders toward the back. Are they impatient to see late arrivers? The seating seems to be pew like. Pasternak, like most artists, wants the viewer to bring their own interpretation to the image and is most circumspect to give an explanation. A church, a union hall, a political meeting -- which is it? The mood seems to be one of anxiety rather than celebration. The artist did answer why all men. He says that "he likes to create the tension of the image on the page. Putting women and men together...

'Three Masted Ship, 2' – Artist's Personal Letterhead, Bauhaus Modernism
Located in Myrtle Beach, SC
Lyonel Feininger, 'Three Masted Ship, 2 (Dreimastiges Schiff, 2)', woodcut, 1937, one of a small but unknown number of letterhead proofs; Prasse W296. Feininger estate stamp and inventory no. 'W 865' in pencil, bottom left sheet corner. Annotated 'W 296' and 'on block : 3702a' in pencil, bottom right sheet corner. A fine impression, on cream, laid, letterhead stock; hinge remains on the left and right top sheet edges, verso, in excellent condition. Very scarce. Image size 2 1/4 x 2 11/16 inches; sheet size 10 x 6 3/4 inches. Archivally sleeved, unmatted. Exhibited: 'Lyonel Feininer, Woodcuts Used As Letterheads'; Associated American Artists; Feb 4 - March 2, 1974; New York, NY. ABOUT THE ARTIST Lyonel Feininger (1871-1956) was born in New York City into a musical family—his father was a violinist and composer, his mother was a singer and pianist. He studied violin with his father, and by the age of 12, he was performing in public, but he also drew incessantly, most notably the steamboats and sailing ships on the Hudson and East Rivers, and the landscape around Sharon, Conn., where he spent time on a farm owned by a family friend. At the age of 16 he left New York to study music and art in Germany, from where his parents emigrated. Drawn more to the visual arts, he attended schools in Hamburg, Berlin, and Paris from 1887 to 1892. After completing his studies, Feininger began his artistic career as a cartoonist and illustrator, his originality leading him to great success. In 1906, after working for a dozen years in Germany, he was offered a job as a cartoonist at the Chicago Tribune, the largest circulation newspaper in the Midwest. He worked there for a year, inventing what became the standard design for the comic strip: in the words of John Carlin, “an overall pattern. . . that allowed the page to be read both as a series of elements one after the other, like language and as a group of juxtaposed images, like visual art.” His originality did not end there: he went on to become one of the great abstract painters. Like Kandinsky, music was his model, but Kandinsky only knew music from the outside—as a listener (inspired initially by Wagner, then by Schoenberg)—while Feininger knew it from the inside. He lived in Paris from 1906 to 1908, during which time he met and was influenced by the work of progressive painters Robert Delaunay and Jules Pascin, as well as that of Paul Cezanne and Vincent van Gogh. He began painting full-time, developing his distinctive Iyrical style based on Cubist and Expressionist idioms and a concern for the emotive qualities of light and color. He exhibited with the Der Blaue Reiter group in 1913, and in 1917, he had his first solo exhibition at Galerie Der Sturm in Berlin. One year after his solo exhibition, in 1918, Feininger began making woodcuts. He became enamored with the medium, producing an impressive 117 in his first year of exploring the printmaking medium. In 1919 at the invitation of the architect Walter Gropius, he was appointed the first master at the newly formed Staatliches Bauhaus in Weimar. His woodcut of a cathedral crowned...

Circa 1990 original poster by Razzia for Slazenger Tennis - Bjorn Borg
Located in PARIS, FR
The circa 1990 original poster by Razzia for Slazenger Tennis is a striking example of the artist’s signature style, blending luxury, sport, and bold graphic design. Known for his elegant and sophisticated approach to advertising, Razzia—whose real name is Gérard Courbouleix–Dénériaz—created some of the most recognizable promotional posters of the late 20th century, covering subjects from fashion to automobiles and sports. This Slazenger Tennis poster reflects the prestige and tradition associated with the Slazenger brand, one of the oldest and most respected names in tennis. Founded in 1881, Slazenger has long been linked to Wimbledon, professional tournaments, and classic sports aesthetics. The poster, likely featuring clean lines, refined composition, and a minimalist yet luxurious approach, captures the timeless elegance of tennis as both a competitive and lifestyle sport. Razzia’s work often evokes a sense of nostalgia and exclusivity, drawing inspiration from Art Deco and early 20th-century advertising posters. His technique—unlike modern digital design—relies on hand-painted artwork transformed into high-quality lithographs, adding a unique richness and depth to his compositions. As a collectible, this 1990s Slazenger Tennis poster is highly sought after by sports enthusiasts, tennis memorabilia collectors, and fans of Razzia’s artwork. It stands as a testament to Slazenger’s legacy in professional tennis and the enduring power of classic sports advertising. Sport - Roland Garros - Björn Borg Rally Posters...
