Published on the occasion of Schnabel’s 1990 show at the Yvon Lambert Gallery, Paris - the paintings from this series, painted on “Vichy” fabric, inspired by the Parisian department store Tati, are reproduced along with an excerpt of a dialogue from the Wim Wenders movie Paris Texas. About the artist: Julian Schnabel is a painter and filmmaker known as an integral member of the American Neo-Expressionists along with Jean-Michel Basquiat and Eric Fischl. Schnabel’s application of paint on massive canvases, use of unconventional materials such as broken plates, and representation of human figure(s) are hallmarks of his most famous works. “My paintings take up room, they make a stand. People will always react to that,” he said of his work. “Some people get inspired, others get offended. But, that's good. I like that.” Born on October 26, 1951 in Brooklyn, NY, Schnabel participated in the Independent Study Program at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York in the late 1970s, after his public persona grew. Jean-Michel Basquiat Photograph by Nick Taylor of Gray: This rare Basquiat photograph was taken from Nicholas Taylor’s well-documented portfolio exploring his friendship with Jean-Michel Basquiat - a friendship which began when both collaborated on the historic New York No Wave band, “GRAY” in the late 1970s; before the two briefly lived together in the East Village. Selections from Taylor's portfolio were most notably exhibited as part of the Basquiat retrospective at London's Barbican in 2017 and have been featured in numerous noteworthy publications on Basquiat. The two would collaborate in the No Wave band “Gray” before Taylor launched a successful career as a DJ famous for track-looping (named "DJ High Priest" by Basquiat). His track “Suicide Mode” would later be used in the soundtrack for Julian Schnabel’s 1996 film “Basquiat."
