"Two Reclining Nudes" is an exceptional Lithograph of Pearlstein's Realistic style. The nudes are posed reclining, neither engaged with either each other or the viewer, and give the atmosphere of being in a dream state. It is an intimate scene without intimacy. Their full-figured bodies exude power and strength which is reinforced by not fitting within the frame. This Lithograph is #42 of an edition of 100 with one blind stamp, and signed by the artist all located in the upper left corner. Philip Pearlstein is an American painter born in Pittsburgh, PA, and best known for Modernist Realism nudes. Cited by critics as the preeminent figure painter of the 1960s to 2000s, he led a revival in realist art. He is a Distinguished Professor Emeritus with paintings in the collections of over 70 public art museums. In 1941, his junior year in high school, he received his first recognition when awarded first and third prizes in Scholastic Magazine’s 14th National High School Art Exhibition. Upon graduation from high school in 1942, he enrolled in the Carnegie Institute of Technology but the draft limited his attendance to one year. After discharge from the army in 1946, he returned to Carnegie Tech where he received his BFA in 1949. Upon graduation, he moved to New York City where he pursued work in graphic design and received a Master’s degree in art history from New York University in 1955. Pearlstein worked as a graphic designer for Life Magazine before becoming an instructor at the Pratt Institute, and then a professor at Brooklyn College; he has also served as a visiting artist at several prestigious institutions throughout the country. His work has been exhibited in several solo exhibitions throughout the United States with paintings in the collections of over 70 public art museums. Pearlstein served as a President of the American Academy of Arts and Letters from 2003-2006 and currently lives and works in New York. “It is what is painted between the outlines that makes the difference between merely competent painting and really meaningful art.” —Philip Pearlstein In spring of 1946 he becomes assistant to Robert Lepper, head of the Design Program at Carnegie Institute of Technology, at the firm of Altenhof and Bown, Architects, and designs catalogs for building products through 1949. Meanwhile he enrolled at Carnegie Institute of Technology and studied with Robert Lepper, Balcomb Green, and Samuel Rosenberg. Meets Dorothy Cantor, George Klauber, and Andy Warhol (Warhola), fellow students at Carnegie Institute of Technology. Serves as art editor of the Carnegie Technical, the student publication of the Engineering School, through 1949 when he received his BFA and moved to New York to live with Andy Warhol. A few months later he worked with graphic designer Ladislav Sutnar in design and production of catalogs of plumbing fixtures and ventilators for the next eight years. He graduated from the Institute of Fine Arts, New York University where he studied with Karl Lehmann, Craig Smith and Jose Lopez-Rey. In 1954 Clement Greenberg selectd Pearlstein to be in “Emerging Talent” show at Kootz Gallery, New York. Torso is shown. He received his M.A. in Art History from Institute of Fine Arts, New York University. His thesis on Francis Picabia with Jose Lopez-Rey and H.W. Janson as advisors. In September of 1958 he received a Fulbright Grant for Painting in Italy and traveled to Rome, Florence, Venice, Amalfi Coast and Sicily. Back in New York his drawing group includes at various times during the following thirteen years: Ann Arnold, Rudolph Burkhardt, Charles Cajori, Gretna Campbell, Lois Dodd, Louis Finkelstein, Joe Fiore, Sideo and Nora Fromboluti, Mary Frank, Stephen Greene, Theophil Groell (Repke), Philip Guston, Yvonne Jacquette, Diana Kurtz, Alex Katz, Gabriel Laberman, Mercedes Matter, George McNeil, Sidney Tillim, Jack Tworkov and William White. Meets initially in Mercedes Matter’s studio. Continues to meet with group at various locations, including his own studio through 1972. In 1969 and 1971 he received the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation grant. In 1982 he served as the Artist in Residence at the American Academy of Art, Rome. In addition to other numerous awards and honors he received an Honorary Doctorate Degree from the Center for Creative Studies and the College of Art & Design, Detroit, Michigan in 2000. This is an 18th century engraving and etching entitled "Parmigiani Amica" by Robert Strange after a painting by Girolamo Francesco Maria Mazzola, better known as Parmigianino, who lived during the Renaissance period. It was published in London in 1774. As the inscription states, the painting was in the collection of the King of Naples at the time the engraving was made. The engraving depicts a half-length portrait of a young woman, known as Parmigiani's Amica (meaning "female friend" in Italian). She is depicted wearing a simple but elegant dress with a low-cut neckline, which reveals her delicate features and graceful neck. Her hair is arranged in a simple yet stylish manner. She is turning to the right to look lovingly at her infant, which she is holding with her right arm. She is touching the baby's mouth with her left hand. The background of the engraving is plain and unadorned, allowing the viewer to focus entirely on the subject of the portrait. The result is a beautiful and timeless image that captures the essence of Renaissance portraiture. The engraving is printed on watermarked paper. The sheet measures 16.25" high and 12' wide. The sheet is adhered to paper in its upper corners and it has been removed from the paper in its lower corners. There is some mild discoloration and some wrinkling in the margins, including the lower inscription area, and a small dark spot in the upper margin, which may represent a drop of ink occuring at the time of printing. These issues do not involve the image, which is in very good condition. Belle of 14th Street After two successful television shows on CBS, Barbra's manager, Marty Erlichman told the press, “We don't intend to go to the well once too often. The next special will have other performers. However, Barbra will never become just another hostess for just another musical variety show. Whatever we decide to do in the future shows, she will dominate in a unique fashion.” Barbra’s third television special for CBS and her sponsor, Monsanto, was titled The Belle of 14th Street . In February 1966, shortly after finishing up Color Me Barbra , Streisand and husband Elliott Gould took a second honeymoon in Paris. The trip was financed by her television corporate sponsor, Chemstrand. Barbra told the press, “I’m here to purchase the wardrobe for my next TV special. Cost is no object because my sponsor is picking up the tab.” At that point the theme of her third TV show would be fashion, and Paris offered many couture choices. Barbra was seen at a Dior fashion show wearing not the designer’s clothes, but a jaguar suit and hat she had designed herself. In all, it is said Barbra chose nine Dior outfits at a cost of $150,000. However, Barbra Streisand's third television special for CBS was postponed. In March 1966, Barbra flew to London to appear at the Prince of Wales Theatre in Funny Girl . Shortly after beginning her run in London, Barbra announced her pregnancy. Not only did that cause her concert tour to be abbreviated, but Barbra’s television special was postponed as well. Barbra told the BBC in July 1966: “I also can’t do my third television show, which I was supposed to do here [London].” Returning to the States, Barbra performed four concert dates, and then retired to enjoy the rest of her pregnancy and give birth to her son, Jason, in December 1966. CBS and Chemstrand wanted a new special by the end of 1967, therefore production on the show picked up momentum in March 1967. (Barbra was due in Hollywood in May to begin shooting the Funny Girl film.) The format and theme of the television show had changed, too. Instead of centering on fashion, Barbra’s next special would be situated in a 1900’s Vaudeville theater. “We were all determined that the show not be just a variety format,” director Joe Layton said. “We wanted something different. So we hit upon the idea of restaging a vaudeville performance. All the acts, songs, skits and specialties had to be derivative of the period between 1895-1912.” Barbra’s creative collaborators did meticulous research on Vaudeville — “We even called George Burns in Hollywood and Jack Pearl,” said Barbra’s manager, Marty Erlichman. Entitled The Belle of 14th Street , the new special would allow Barbra to play several different characters but not have to shoulder the burden of carrying another one-woman show—this time Streisand would be accompanied by guest stars: Broadway actor Jason Robards; Vaudeville veteran John Bubbles; and Lee Allen...
