This beautiful, limited edition original color woodblock is by the famous Showa Shin Hanga woodblock master Clifton Karhu (1927-2007). It bears the original frame and has a label on the back from a Tokyo gallery. The work is a beautiful impression with rich color. It and the frame are in excellent condition. The print measures 16 x 16 inches. The frame is 23 ½ x 23 ½ inches. It is numbered lower left as AP5 - Artist Proof #5 and is pencil signed and dated ‘74 lower right. An American of Finnish descent, Clifton Karhu was born in Minnesota in 1927. Raised together with his twin brother Raymond, Karhu was the son of painters Arne and Anna Karhu. After his graduation in 1946 he served in the military at an American Navy base in Japan. Returning to America following his military service in 1950, Karhu enrolled at the Minneapolis School of Art but quit two years later to pursue missionary work as a Lutheran minister. Karhu left the missionary work in 1958 and chose to move his new family to Gifu City, a small provincial town northwest of Kyoto, Japan where he set about returning to his art. Karhu soon found local success in 1961; obtaining first prize at the Chubu Taiheijo Bijutsu Kyokai Ten (The Middle Pacific Art Group Exhibition) and fixing his first single, professional exhibition at the Shin Gifu Gallery. In hopes of providing their three children with an international education, Karhu settled in Kyoto in 1963. The next few years proved heavily influential in Karhu’s work. Arguably forming the foundation for all his future success, Karhu found tutelage under recognized woodblock artist and gallery owner Tetsuo Yamada and colour theorist Stanton Macdonald-Wright. Responsible for shifting Karhu’s artistic doubts, Karhu proceeded to fulfill a very successful career in woodblock printing - carving his own works largely by himself. Clifton Karhu passed away in 2007 after an illustrious career that saw him viewed and celebrated as a local Kyoto celebrity, as well as having exhibited widely in many countries around the world. About the Artist: ALEX BOYD Alex Boyd's images represent a major addition to the tradition of modern landscape photography" – Robert Macfarlane, Author Alex Boyd is a landscape and documentary photographer, printmaker and writer. His work is primarily concerned with the Scottish landscape. As a photographer his work examines the role of early Scottish landscape photographers, often using antique processes such as the Victorian wet-plate collodion process using antique cameras in mountain environments. He is best known for his conceptual and figurative landscape photography which explores concepts of Scottish identity through historical and contemporary romanticism, neo-romanticism, Romantic nationalism and Spirit of Place. His work is largely concerned with depictions of the Celtic landscape, conservation and remote places, and is often characterised by its stark, poetic and introspective qualities. In 2019 he was awarded a Daiwa Foundation Scholarship to work and photograph the mountains of the Japan Alps centred on Mount Yari as well as shortlisted for the Hariban Award. He was the Mountain Photographer of the Year at the Kendal Mountain Festival in 2013, the UK’s largest mountain festival. His work on the Cuillin mountains on the Isle of Skye as the Royal Scottish Academy’s artist in Residence is in several National Collections. His work has been widely exhibited internationally with solo exhibitions at the Scottish Parliament, as well as group exhibitions at the Royal Academy, Royal Ulster Academy and the Royal Scottish Academy. His work is held in the collections of the National Galleries of Scotland, The Royal Photographic Society, the Royal Scottish Academy, the V&A in London and the Yale Centre for British Arts in the USA. His first book St Kilda – The Silent Islands was recently shortlisted for a Saltire Award. His second book The Isle of Rust, a collaboration with writer Jonathan Meades was, like his first book, named as a photography book of the year by The Scotsman. He is a Fellow of the National Library of Scotland, The Winston Churchill Memorial Trust, The Ballinglen Arts Foundation, and the Royal Society of Art. He is currently working on a PhD on Scottish Photography at Northumbria University, a selection of new books on The Faroe Islands, The Outer Hebrides. A collection of his Scottish and Irish collodion work is due out in 2021 as well as a solo exhibition ‘Hesperus’ at Stills, Scotland’s Centre of Photography, in June 2020. Their current photographic project, In Empathy We Trust, presents viewers with re-imagined iconic images from the history of art. The collaborators re-envisioned the work of old master painters beginning with the Flemish Primitives and spanning nearly 600 years. With subjects enacting roles with varied representations of race, age, and sexual orientation, e2 “remakes with a twist” works by artists such as van Eyck, Rafael, Velázquez, Rembrandt, Vermeer, Fragonard, and Manet. Inspired by the original paintings, e2 hopes to “jar viewers” into questioning their own perceptions. They invite viewers to see these images, and indeed the world anew, using humor, wit and playfulness. In addition they hope that the viewers will see how stereotypes can lead to prejudice and discrimination. The collaboration began in 2010, after completing work on the traveling exhibition and book project Before (During) After: Louisiana Photographers Respond to Hurricane Katrina. This natural and man-made disaster brought social inequities in Louisiana into vivid focus. Conversations between Kleinveld and Julien revealed their mutual interest in issues of social justice. Accompanying e2’s series is its own coat of arms, bringing new meaning to the traditional symbol of the aristocracy. Heralded with pelicans and a fleur de lis, the shield reflects the artists’ Louisiana roots. It also features their motto: In Empathy We Trust, which reflects the core values of e2’s work. Brown, was a notable English painter and illustrator from London. His early career was spent as a London cabinet-maker specializing in painted furniture, often with floral decorations. Brookshaw also published supplementary drawing manuals on fruit, flowers, and birds. Pomona Britannicaa London 1804-1812 Engravings with original hand-coloring George Brookshaw's splendid "Pomona Brittanica" is a masterpiece among 19th-century British flower books. The publication of the "Pomona" marked the re-emergence of the acclaimed artist into the public eye after a total disappearance of nearly a decade.
