The top of this antique poster features the image of the first poster from 1904 in the art nouveau style; and the bottom of the 1954 Foire de Paris where the sails cover part of the earliest poster image. The bottom portion of this design is reflected in its art deco style with the wording of the name of the Foire de Paris reflecting in the water.

Gilbert and Sullivan refer to the Victorian-era theatrical partnership of the librettist W. S. Gilbert (1836–1911) and the composer Arthur Sullivan (1842–1900). Gilbert, who wrote the words, created fanciful 'topsy-turvy' worlds for these operas where each absurdity is taken to its logical conclusion. Sullivan created the music for these operas.
"The Mikado" is a comic opera by Gilbert and Sullivan, first performed in 1885. Set in Japan, it satirizes British politics and society through its whimsical characters and humorous plot. John Brower worked in Chicago as a billboard designer for 12 years. He taught art at Alverno College of Milwaukee, Wright Junior College in Chicago, the University of Illinois, and the University of Kentucky. A Pop Artist.
In John Browers' work two important things come forward: the design and the image. In the painting "Indian 2" you are denied simply enjoying the background or the realistic figure in the foreground. They both on their own would make an interesting painting but Johns' insistence on putting them together leaves you with a picture scrubbed clean of indecision, so clear that you can hardly help yourself from needing to understand its meaning. John Browers' pictures are modern - no matter how instant they look you can tell they have been thought about and realized with a lot of calculation and intentionality.
He has exhibited regularly in galleries throughout the country over the past 40 years and his work is in numerous collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC.
