Alexander Calder
Woman with Square Umbrella

1928

About the Item

A sculpture in wood depicting a woman holding an umbrella. "Woman with Square Umbrella" by Post War artist Alexander Calder is signed underneath, "Calder." "Woman with a Square Umbrella" is an early example of Calder's wood carvings and particularly rare since Calder abandoned the medium in the 1930's in favor of sheet metal. Calder originally gave this sculpture to a roommate in New York City, and it has remained in the same family since that time. "Woman with Square Umbrella" was first exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in 1943. Provenance: Gift from the artist By descent to the present owner
