About the Item

PABLO PICASSO Tête de chèvre de profil (A.R. 145), June 5th, 1952 Ed. 250 pcs White earthenware, decoration with engobes under partial glaze with a brush 31.5 x 51.5 cm I 12 3/8n x 20 1/4 in Stamped on the back : Empreinte de Picasso, Madoura Plein feu Picasso : Catalogue of the edited ceramic works 1947-1971, by Alain Ramié, Editions Madoura, Vallauris, 1988, illustrated under no.145, p.80. Pablo Picasso, known for his endless artistic curiosity, had a deep appreciation for ceramics, which he explored extensively from the late 1940s onward. The piece "Tête de chèvre de profil" is a striking example of his work in this medium, featuring bold, gestural depictions of goats rendered in flowing, expressive lines. This ceramic is a testament to Picasso's fascination with animals, which often appeared in his works as symbols of vitality, freedom, and playfulness. The goat was a particularly significant motif for Picasso, largely due to his beloved pet, Esmeralda. Adopted in the late 1940s while living in the south of France, Esmeralda became a fixture in his studio at La Californie, his villa in Cannes. The artist adored her scrappy, mischievous nature, and she roamed freely among his sculptures and canvases, often acting as a living muse. In "Tête de chèvre de profil," the goat is depicted with dynamic, almost primitive energy, reflecting both Picasso's admiration for ancient Mediterranean art and his own instinctive, spontaneous approach to form. The stylized, fluid figures wrap around the vase, giving it a sense of movement and life—an echo of Esmeralda's lively spirit. This ceramic embodies Picasso's ability to transform everyday inspiration into timeless, poetic works of art.
