"MIDNIGHT BLUE", sculpture, clay, relief, abstract, contemporary, ceramic
Located in Toronto, Ontario
Midnight Blue, a ceramic relief sculpture of high-fired porcelain pigmented with oxides, paint and epoxy, is a recent work by New York artist Harold Wortsman. This sculpture is ready to be mounted to the wall. Note the artist's hand in the mark-making – cuts and radiating lines, the suggestion of maps, geometry and counting systems – it is characteristic of Wortsman's practice. Warm, contemporary, uniquely crafted, yet speaks to ancient, tribal traditions of art-making that cross cultures and histories. Highly attuned to the art of Africa, the Middle East, India and Asia, his forms are organic abstracts with masculine and feminine attributes that resonate together as a pleasing enigma. They make sense immediately, yet never give up all their secrets. Midnight Blue was recently exhibited at Harold Wortsman: Time and Space, Orange Art Foundation, New York City, February 2022. From Harold Wortsman – "With sculpture, my material of choice is high-fired clay. Pieces are first low-fired in an electric kiln. I do not use glazes. Instead, I use oxides applied to the bisqued (low-fired) clay. As with a tattoo, oxides permit the surface underneath to breathe—like naked skin. The work is then high-fired in a gas kiln with double reduction to cone 10. The final temperature is 2,300 degrees F. At a certain point, oxygen intake is reduced to the kiln. Because the fire has reached a critical mass, it needs oxygen and chemically takes it from the clay and the oxides painted on. Like a jazz improvisation, each kiln load comes out slightly different." From Jonathan Goodman – "Wortsman has increasingly moved into his own – a place in which the relations between the abstractions of volume and the intimations of very old culture are merged in a way that is new." – Essay, "Harold Wortsman: Time and Space", Orange Art Foundation, February 2022, New York City. Harold Wortsman is a sculptor and printmaker based in Brooklyn, NY. He “creates forms that bring to mind archaic cult objects and exude a quiet concentrated strength.” (Argauer Zeitung, Switzerland). His work, an edgy mix of freedom and clarity, can be found in public and private collections in the US, including The Library of Congress, Yale University, The New York Public Library Print Collection, The New York Historical Society, Smith College, Indiana University’s Lilly Library, Brandeis University, The Newark Public Library Special Collections Division, and the Jane Voorhees Zimmerli Art Museum Print Archive. Also in private and public collections in Europe, including the Municipal Collection of the City of Brugg, Switzerland. Harold studied at the New York Studio School of Drawing, Painting and Sculpture, with sculptor George Spaventa...

Snakish (Curvy Abstract Minimalist Encaustic Wall Sculpture in Black and White)
Located in Hudson, NY
Abstract minimalist three-dimensional wall sculpture in black and white "Snakish II", made by Hudson Valley artist, Donise English, in 2022 hand-stitched paper, beeswax (encaustic) and thread 36 x 10 x 3 inches hangs with a small thread notch on back extremely lightweight, weighs no more than 1.5 lbs. Excellent condition and ready to hang This abstract minimalist three-dimensional wall sculpture was made by Hudson Valley artist, Donise English, in 2022. The playful motif of hand-stitched paper, layered with black and white acrylic paint and coated with encaustic, is inspired by the artist's interest in architecture and blueprint drawings. The winding segments of white and black encaustic layered paper are assembled in a curving, snake-like formation, which are then hand-sewn by the artist. The lightweight wall sculpture hangs with a small thread notch, installed by the artist on the back of the piece. About the artist: Donise English is a Poughkeepsie-based artist who received her MFA from Bard College and is currently a Professor of Studio Art at Marist College in Poughkeepsie, NY.Donise English has received numerous awards including a 2018 New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship in Painting; the Invitational Award for Outstanding Contemporary Talent from the University of Bridgeport, Connecticut; Purchase Prize from the “11th National Juried Exhibition” at the College of Notre Dame of Maryland; 1st Prize, “Women in the Visual Arts,” Erector Square Gallery, New Haven, Connecticut; the Joseph A. Cain Memorial Purchase Award for Sculpture, Del Mar College, Texas, Honorable Mention; and others. Artist Statement: I am interested in drawing and collaging multiple layers of information that refer abstractly to maps, architectural drawings and blueprints or patterns and structures found in such things as roller coasters, power lines and fences. I use gouache and collaged paper in a series of layers that are a visual and ideological response to the previous layer to define my pictorial space. For each piece I create a set of rules to follow about the use of a limited palette, a grid format, opacity of paper and whether a piece may include curving lines or maintain a rectilinear structure. Resume: EDUCATION Master of Fine Arts in Painting Bard College 1986 Bachelor of Science in Art History State University College at New Paltz 1977 Additional Study: New York Studio School (Drawing Marathons) Columbia University, School of Architecture Women’s Studio Workshop TEACHING Professor of Studio Art, Department of Art and Art History, Marist College, Poughkeepsie,NY Coordinator, Interior Design Program, Florence, Italy campus 1992-present AWARDS Finalist, “Saatchi Showdown” 2010 Invitational Award for Outstanding Contemporary Talent, University of Bridgeport, CT 2000 Purchase Prize, “11th National Juried Exhibition” College of Notre Dame of Maryland, Baltimore 1999 First Prize, “Women in the Visual Arts ‘95” Erector Square Gallery, New Haven, CT 1995 Joseph A. "Daffodil Book Vase", Contemporary, Ceramic, Porcelain, Sculpture, Colored Slip
By Janice Jakielski
Located in St. Louis, MO
"I create objects of curiosity; beautiful objects to provide focus, retreat and pause in an overwhelming world. Through the use of meticulous detail, familiar forms and uncertain function I coax my audience to draw near, closing the physical gap between viewer and object. In this way the details of my workmanship and the excessive fragility of the porcelain act as a whisper, flirtatiously demanding investigation. This work began from a place of material exploration. I adapt and re-invent ceramic engineering processes and materials for application in the studio. This experimental approach to ceramics allows me to circumvent the constraints of a conventional clay body. By inventing a new way of casting and manipulating ultra-thin porcelain sheets I am able to create impossible objects. Cut, veneered, twirled and slotted my vessels have a material ambiguity that brings the viewer to a place of sensory uncertainty. My pieces are inspired by iconic historic vessels. I do not replicate these objects but instead re-imagine them in ways not feasible using traditional ceramics. By removing the interior volume I am able to contemplate these forms divorced from function. They are vessels without voids, containers without containment. I use planes...

By Jan Huling
Located in St. Louis, MO
Jan Huling was born in Chicago and raised in St. Louis. After attending the Kansas City Art Institute she started her career in greeting card design at Hallmark. She now works in New York City as a product designer, children’s book author and beadist. Neither sketched nor planned, Huling‘s three-dimensional works draw inspiration from her travels to India and Mexico, as well as imagined, playful scenes reminiscent of childhood fairy tales and fantasies. Her work is approachable yet evocative, incorporating spiritual iconography alongside humorous artifacts of contemporary popular culture. The armatures for Huling’s sculptures are an unpredictable mix of forms ranging from Kewpie and Munny dolls to birds and giant insects. In addition to seed beads, Huling’s colorful sculptures incorporate a variety of found objects, such as buttons, coins, tokens and costume jewelry. Huling’s slow and meticulous beading process, the intricacy of her swirling, hypnotic patterns, and the spontaneous manner with which Huling approaches each new project results in sculpture that is both delicate and alluring – simply put, she transforms the ordinary into the extraordinary. Huling recieved a Fellowship from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts in 2015. Contemporary, Mixed Media, Sculpture, Colorful, Glass, Pattern, Beaded...
