Arman (born Armand Pierre Fernandez) was an early proponent of accumulation and scatter art. In 1959, he began displaying collections of objects in Plexiglas cases and creating installations of strewn garbage, which he called “Poubelles,” or “trash bins.” He also welded identical objects together to create larger sculptural pieces. In 1961, along with Yves Klein, Jean Tinguely, Jacques Villeglé, art critic Pierre Restany, and others, Arman founded Nouveau Réalisme, a group interested in new approaches to the concept of “reality.” Spending time in New York in the 1960s, Arman adopted destruction as a strategy for creating something new—slicing, burning, and smashing objects such as bronze statues and musical instruments to mount on canvas. Hazel Brill Jackson (Born December 15, 1894, in Philadelphia) spent most of her early childhood in Italy. Attending the Scuola Rosatti in Florence, Jackson enjoyed afternoons at the zoo, pursuing her favorite pastime: drawing animals. World War I forced the return of the Jackson family to the United States where they settled in Boston. Hazel spent the next four years at the Boston Museum School, where she studied with Bela Pratt and Charles Grafly.
Jackson returned to Rome after the war, where she worked with Angelo Zanelli and later had her own studio. With such works as Roman Work Horse and Ned (Mussolini's favorite jumper), she began to exhibit both in Rome and Florence, and eventually became a member of the Circolo Artistico di Roma.
The sculptress returned to the United States in 1935 and opened a studio in Newburgh, New York. She continued to sculpt animals, concentrating on horse and dog portraits. Jackson had one-woman shows at the Guild of Boston Artists in 1938 and in 1968. In 1945, she was awarded the Ellin P. Speyer Prize by the National Academy of Design in New York City for Play-Day and Romance (a mare and foal group) and in 1949, she won the same prize for Indian Antelope. Hazel Jackson is represented in the Brookgreen Gardens collection by The Listeners, a sculpture group of raccoons, which was placed there in 1964. Angelo Di Benedetto was the son of Italian immigrants and a pivotal figure in the American modern art movement. After studying at the prestigious Cooper Union Art School in New York City and earning a certificate in freehand drawing, Di Benedetto further honed his skills at the Boston Museum Art School, where he was awarded a scholarship. His talent was recognized early, as he won first prize in his first juried exhibition at the Montclair Museum in 1937.
In 1938, Di Benedetto's ethnological study trip to Haiti, sponsored by the Royal Netherlands Steamship Line, deeply influenced his art and broadened his artistic perspective. His first solo exhibition in 1940 at the Montross Gallery in New York City showcased his vibrant Haitian paintings.
During World War II, Di Benedetto served in Africa and later in Washington, D.C., before returning to Denver in 1945. Inspired by Colorado’s stunning landscape, he decided to make it his home. By 1947, he had settled in Central City, where he became a key figure in the local art scene. Di Benedetto co-founded the Denver Art Center with Frank Vavra...
