Contemporary Sculptures

CONTEMPORARY STYLE

Used to refer to a time rather than an aesthetic, Contemporary art generally describes pieces created after 1970 or being made by living artists anywhere in the world. This immediacy means it encompasses art responding to the present moment through diverse subjects, media and themes. Contemporary painting, sculpture, photography, performance, digital art, video and more frequently includes work that is attempting to reshape current ideas about what art can be, from Felix Gonzalez-Torres’s use of candy to memorialize a lover he lost to AIDS-related complications to Jenny Holzer’s ongoing “Truisms,” a Conceptual series that sees provocative messages printed on billboards, T-shirts, benches and other public places that exist outside of formal exhibitions and the conventional “white cube” of galleries.

Contemporary art has been pushing the boundaries of creative expression for years. Its disruption of the traditional concepts of art are often aiming to engage viewers in complex questions about identity, society and culture. In the latter part of the 20th century, contemporary movements included Land art, in which artists like Robert Smithson and Michael Heizer create large-scale, site-specific sculptures, installations and other works in soil and bodies of water; Sound art, with artists such as Christian Marclay and Susan Philipsz centering art on sonic experiences; and New Media art, in which mass media and digital culture inform the work of artists such as Nam June Paik and Rafaël Rozendaal.

The first decades of the 21st century have seen the growth of Contemporary African art, the revival of figurative painting, the emergence of street art and the rise of NFTs, unique digital artworks that are powered by blockchain technology.

Major Contemporary artists practicing now include Ai Weiwei, Cecily Brown, David Hockney, Yayoi Kusama, Jeff Koons, Takashi Murakami and Kara Walker.

"As an artist, I am fascinated by the inherent balance and symmetry possible in geometric structures, which reflect the order and structure underlying the natural world. By embracing these forms, I strive to create a sculpture that conveys a sense of harmony, balance, and serenity. At the same time, I am captivated by the expressive potential of abstract figurative sculpture. The human form, stripped of literal representation, can convey a sense of universality and connection. Through simplification and abstraction, I aim to distill the essence of the human form, inviting viewers to explore the tension between the geometric and the figurative. Combining these two influences, my artistic practice is driven by a desire to create works that resonate with people from all walks of life. I aspire to offer moments of contemplation, inviting viewers to engage with the sculptures and discover their own personal narratives within the forms." - Kevin Kelly. Kevin Kelly was born in upstate New York and graduated from Pratt Institute in 1982. He has been living and working in Dumbo, Brooklyn, since 2007. He has shown his work across the United States, including New York, Los Angeles, Miami, Santa Fe, and Westport. His work is in numerous collections, including Simon Cowell in Los Angeles. Lisa Meek transforms books by cutting their bindings, painting the pages and folding them to create floral blossoms rooted in the words of the authors. Each page has been lightly tinted adding a dimension of color to the work without obscuring the words on the page Lisa Meek’s sculptures, collectively titled Biblio Botany, possess a duality that is reflective of the artist herself and her eclectic range of interests. As a practicing medical professional with an inherent artistic drive, Lisa Meek has made impactful contributions to those she interacts with in both office and gallery spaces. The polarity of these worlds conglomerate beautifully, manifesting through her notable success in both fields. Lisa’s pursuit of a cosmetological career has always been paralleled with a desire to create, to utilize her artistic prowess in order to share her perspective and initiate important conversations. This desire has been integral to her experience since early adolescence, when she began acting upon her creative drive by depicting nature scenes.  The process in which Lisa assembles her sculptures is quite complex. In order to achieve depth and nuance, Lisa employs considerable intention throughout the planning process. With great admiration and ponder, Lisa cuts pages out of various literary works which highlight topics she wishes to discuss, human rights often being central. Attention to detail is vital; certain books possess qualities unsuitable for paint and shape manipulation. Every aspect of her work is deliberate; the symbolism associated with color and flower species, the pairing of literature, the minute details of shape and object placement. This layered production process exemplifies Lisa’s contemplative nature.  Prior to 2018, the majority of Lisa’s work was created on traditional canvas. Spurring from her exposure to contemporary mediums, she was able to redefine her creative denotations and expand her personal definition of art. The surface work of Liza Lou...

A Soul Consoled, Sculpture, by Khang Pham-New, Marble, White, Mother, Child "My childhood experiences growing up in Vietnam have paradoxically become a driving force in my artistic creations. I am impassioned with biomorphic abstract forms. As an artist, I am aware of and respect the art movements of my time, but to create, I remove myself from the influences of this time and retreat into a private space where I can experiment and explore the possibilities of each phase of my inner life." - Khang Pham-New Khang Pham was born in war-torn South Vietnam...

Located in New Orleans, LA
Erica Larkin Gaudet has been fabricating sculptural work for over 30 years. In her new series entitled Open Vessels, the works are created out of copper with surface finishes from metallic luster to matte aged patina. Open Vessels My new series of sculptures, Open Vessels, are hand forged copper abstracted forms inspired by elements of nature, human-nature interaction and in particular stages of growth. Balloon Dog (Orange)
Located in New York, NY
Balloon Dog is an iconic work within the highly acclaimed Celebration series, which JEFF KOONS began in the mid 1990s. The Celebration artworks reference certain times of year (holidays and birthdays) but also the celebration of the cycle of life. What else could suggest the cheer of children’s parties more eloquently than a colorful balloon, twisted into the instantly recognizable form of a dog. According to the artist, “It is about celebration and childhood and color and simplicity – but it’s also a Trojan horse. It’s a Trojan horse to the whole body of art work.” Balloon Dog has the profoundness of an archaic sculpture. The monumental Balloon Dog sculptures...

Works in this style were very popular during the 21st Century and Contemporary, but contemporary artists have continued to produce works inspired by this movement. If you’re looking to add sculptures created in this style to introduce contrast in an otherwise neutral space in your home, the works available on 1stDibs include elements of blue, red, purple, orange and other colors. Many Pop art paintings were created by popular artists on 1stDibs, including KOBE, Richard MacDonald, KAWS, and HIRO ANDO. Frequently made by artists working with Metal, and Bronze and other materials, all of these pieces for sale are unique and have attracted attention over the years. Not every interior allows for large Contemporary sculptures, so small editions measuring 0.25 inches across are also available.
