Abstract Art

ABSTRACT STYLE

Beginning in the early 20th century, abstract art became a leading style of modernism. Rather than portray the world in a way that represented reality, as had been the dominating style of Western art in the previous centuries, abstract paintings, prints and sculptures are marked by a shift to geometric forms, gestural shapes and experimentation with color to express ideas, subject matter and scenes.

Although abstract art flourished in the early 1900s, propelled by movements like Fauvism and Cubism, it was rooted in the 19th century. In the 1840s, J.M.W. Turner emphasized light and motion for atmospheric paintings in which concrete details were blurred, and Paul Cézanne challenged traditional expectations of perspective in the 1890s.

Some of the earliest abstract artists — Wassily Kandinsky and Hilma af Klint — expanded on these breakthroughs while using vivid colors and forms to channel spiritual concepts. Painter Piet Mondrian, a Dutch pioneer of the art movement, explored geometric abstraction partly owing to his belief in Theosophy, which is grounded in a search for higher spiritual truths and embraces philosophers of the Renaissance period and medieval mystics. Black Square, a daringly simple 1913 work by Russian artist Kazimir Malevich, was a watershed statement on creating art that was free “from the dead weight of the real world,” as he later wrote.

Surrealism in the 1920s, led by artists such as Salvador Dalí, Meret Oppenheim and others, saw painters creating abstract pieces in order to connect to the subconscious. When Abstract Expressionism emerged in New York during the mid-20th century, it similarly centered on the process of creation, in which Helen Frankenthaler’s expressive “soak-stain” technique, Jackson Pollock’s drips of paint, and Mark Rothko’s planes of color were a radical new type of abstraction.

Conceptual art, Pop art, Hard-Edge painting and many other movements offered fresh approaches to abstraction that continued into the 21st century, with major contemporary artists now exploring it, including Anish Kapoor, Mark Bradford, El Anatsui and Julie Mehretu.

Baram 16
Located in Goyang-si, KR
The word "Baram" has two meanings in Korean: "wish (feel or express a strong desire or hope for something that is not easily attainable)" and "wind (the perceptible natural movement of the air)." The "Baram Series" portrays the moment of the air that's stopped in a simple two-dimensional form. Thus, the wind in the Baram Series represents the "present", which means the wind that has already blown represents the "past", and the wind that is about to blow represents the "future". Our wind in the past may be calm or turbulent. Regardless, the present is filled with hope, strongly wishing for the future wind to guide us to happiness. Maybe, these winds in our lives are dictated by our choices, and Baram Series embodies wish to deliver hope to all viewers facing the winds of their choices. <Geonwoo Lee...

COLUMN FRAGMENT , RED SQUARE Belonging to the exhibition "FROM STONE TO CANVAS" inspired by the cathedral of Granada. The work FRAGMENT OF COLUMN QUADRADO COLUMN in red color is intended to simulate a fragment of the columns and semicolumns characteristic of the cathedral of Granada. The main color of the series "from the stone to the canvas" is white with all its shades, a chromatic scheme all its shades, a chromatic scheme that, together with touches of gold, was chosen by the master from Burgos SILOE to preside over the interior of the cathedral. The collection includes colors such as black or fluorine tones to make a wink to another of my most characteristic series, the series "Pop Miami", creating a fusion between both series as in this work. Worked with fabric on canvas, the folds, gathers and drapes that during my professional career in the world of fashion, I would use to design and make distinguished garments, are part of the world of art in this work, painted and sculpted, they become a semi-rigid piece that simulates the fragment of a column. The framing is made of wood in white and gold, which adds exquisiteness to the exquisiteness to the whole. Dans Ce Sens 01 (Abstract painting)

Dans Ce Sens 01 (Abstract painting) Acrylic and ink on canvas - Unframed This artwork is exclusive to IdeelArt. Guillaume Moschini is a French abstract artist mentored by the internationally recognized Supports/Surfaces artists Claude Viallat, Patrick Saytour, and Vincent Bioules. Much like Helen Frankenthaler, Moschini’s work depends on process: unprimed, raw canvas, a diluted pigment (mixed inks, acrylics, and paint thinners), and the unconscious phenomenon that occurs through the process of art making. In his organized studio, he constructs compositions of color, transparent tints, overlays and shapes. Liquid pigments melt into the raw canvas with precarious intention. Meditation on the proper tools, balance of color, form and the flow of material is his strategy. Moschini’s palette is reinvented per series, sometimes vibrant and sometimes muted. Conceptually, Moschini’s work echoes Kenneth Noland’s minimalism without the restraint of flatness. His transparency variations within the color field and transparent overlays reinvent a contemporary and unique approach. Moschini reflects on a time in the history...

Located in Hamburg, HH
Large abstract acrylic painting on canvas by Amanda Andersen; one in a series of four created in 2020 during anxiety filled times due mostly to Covid. The shapes in these works represented a balloon at first–a common subject in the artist's earlier work, which honored the beauty and elegance of hot air balloons and also celebrated their invitation for a romantic escape. We all wanted an escape in 2020. The large shape can also be seen as a window; the static hole we all peered out from to check if the world was still out there. With stripes–also a common visual element in the artist's work, it may even suggest prison bars...

Peter Halley at Sonnabend Gallery, New York (Hand Signed by Peter Halley)
Located in New York, NY
Peter Halley Peter Halley, Sonnabend Gallery, New York (Hand Signed by Peter Halley), 1989 Offset lithograph poster (hand signed by Peter Halley) 28 × 26 inches Unframed Alpha 137 Gallery is honored to offer this historic offset lithograph of American artist Peter Halley's 1989 exhibition at the legendary Sonnabend Gallery in New York which the artist hand signed in black marker. Scroll down for a photograph of our director Nadine Witkin with the artist. Below is Peter Halley's official biography. What it doesn't mention is that Andy Warhol famously painted his portrait in 1986! Peter Halley is that legendary. According to Halley, he didn't realize until after Warhol's death that the polaroids Warhol took of him with his famous "big shot" camera were made into an original painting. Warhol's painting of Peter Halley was included in the recent Andy Warhol retrospective "Andy Warhol - from A to B and Back Again" at the Whitney. PETER HALLEY BIOGRAPHY Peter Halley, born 1953, New York City, is an American artist who came to prominence as a central figure of the Neo-Conceptualist movement of the 1980s. His paintings redeploy the language of geometric abstraction to explore the organization of social space in the digital era. Since the 1980s, Halley’s lexicon has included three elements: “prisons” and “cells,” connected by “conduits,” which are used in his paintings to explore the technologically determined space and pathways that regulate daily life. Using fluorescent color and Roll-a-Tex, a commercial paint additive that provides readymade texture, Halley embraces materials that are anti-naturalistic and commercially manufactured. In the mid 1990s Halley pioneered the use of wall-sized digital prints in his site-specific installations. He has executed installations at Museo Nivola, Orani, Sardinia (2021); Greene Naftali...
