Conceptual Art

CONCEPTUAL STYLE

In 1967, artist Sol LeWitt wrote that in “Conceptual art the idea or concept is the most important aspect of the work.” He was giving a name to an art movement that had emerged in the 1960s in which artists were less focused on their medium being something traditionally “artistic” and instead engaged in using any object, movement, form, action or place to express an idea.

LeWitt’s work was featured alongside an assemblage of notes, drawings and outlines by other artists in “Working Drawings and Other Visible Things on Paper Not Necessarily Meant to Be Viewed as Art,” a groundbreaking show at New York City’s School of Visual Arts curated by Mel Bochner, another leading exponent of Conceptualism. Building on radical 20th-century statements, like Fountain (1917) by French artist Marcel Duchamp, Conceptual artists around Europe and North and South America were not interested in the commercial art scene and rather directly challenged its systems and values.

Stretching into the 1970s, this movement has also been called Post-Object art and Dematerialized art. Conceptual art reflected a larger era of social and political upheaval. Pieces associated with the style range from Roelof Louw’s Soul City (Pyramid of Oranges) (1967) — a work of installation art that sees fresh oranges stacked into a pyramid from which visitors are allowed to take one orange away — to On Kawara’s “Today” series, which saw the Japanese artist carefully painting a date in white acrylic on canvases consisting of a single color from 1966 to his death in 2014. Artists such as Ed Ruscha, who created the Twentysix Gasoline Stations book — a collection of photos of gas stations that is widely said to be the first modern artists’ book — made photography a major platform for Conceptual art, as did Bruce Nauman, who burned one of Ruscha's books and then photographed it for his own.

Conceptual art’s legacy of questioning artistic authorship, ownership and how to work with complex ideas of space and time had a significant influence on the decades of culture that followed, and it continues to inform art today.

As the result of his own experiences, training and life lived, comes out the art of Andres Nagel. Unclassifiable in a particular style, there are many who tried to tag his work as oneiric or surrealist. Even he has been labelled as a Pop artist, by the use of newspapers on his collages, like it happens on this print. According to Nagel, all these attempts of caging the artists are vane, as "even though art is being sold as if, it is not for mass consumerism". This is, the viewer must let go, think and open his or her mind to what is being seen, and mass culture is just the opposite of that. ABOUT THE ARTIST Andrés Nagel Tejada is a Spanish painter, sculptor and printmaker born in San Sebastian in 1947. Nagel completed his studies in architecture in 1972 in Pamplona. During this time as a student he began to work in engraving techniques. Since then he starts to travel to other European countries and the north of Africa. The Spanish scene at that time was dominated by abstraction and already had international recognition thanks to artists such as Chillida and Tapies, but Andres Nagel, who didn't feel identified with these trends did tune with the artistic movements that found in other countries such as Italy, Switzerland and Germany and soon opted for figurative art. A controversial artist, he rose to prominence with some of his works at the beginning of his career. In the mid 70's Nagel started to show his works in many exhibitions, both collectively and individually. Noteworthy among these events, his participation in the exhibition "New Spanish Painting" on Hastings Gallery in New York that introduced him to the American public. In 1978 also participates in a very important exhibition that pays tribute to the work of Joan Miró in Mallorca. During the 80's the artist works in numerous international exhibitions in cities like Varna, Dortmund, Bonn, Basel or Baghdad. In 1988 the Museum of Fine Arts in Bilbao exhibits the graphic work of Nagel, in this show a catalogue raisonné is edited. In 1989 he began his collaboration with the gallery Tasende California and participates in many American art fairs. Thereafter Andrés Nagel travels the world and his work is present in several countries including Mexico, Japan, Singapore, China, France, Canada, Germany or Italy. In 2003 Nagel inaugurates in Amorebieta (Vizcaya) a bronze sculpture of eight meters high that he entitles "La patata" (the potato). Unparalleled defender of the intellectual property, the transfer of this work for urban reasons is considered by Nagel as an insult to his work, leading him to sue the city council. Andrés Nagel's architectural training is very present in all of his works. The way that this artist synthesizes forms and concepts leaves a statement of his beginnings. Tubes and other industrial materials are very present in many of Nagel's works and build up an essential part of the workshop process of this artist. She has also been a subject for them; as she puts it, “we are professional posers.” Recently, however, she has worked to paint portraits of those whose gaze is more internal—monks and nomads in Tibet, aboriginal people in Taiwan—creating large bodies of portraits that investigate the limits of the genre. She returned, with her daughter, to Hockney’s studio in 2014, not only to sit for him but to paint him once again. In 1967, General Idea was founded in Toronto by AA Bronson (b. 1946), Felix Partz (1945-1994), and Jorge Zontal (1944-1994). Over the course of 25 years, they made a significant contribution to postmodern and conceptual art in Canada and beyond. General Idea was both prolific and multi-disciplinary long before it became de rigueur. Together, they worked across photography, sculpture, painting, mail art, video, installation, multiples, and performance. The group also made a significant number of unconventional editioned works and was inspired by the idea of the anti-art object. Thematic continuity was a key element in General Idea's work. Early on they introduced talismans or logos that they would revisit and re-envision, including skulls, ziggurats, and poodles. They were particularly interested in (European) crests used for centuries to represent a city, district, or even a creative or professional guild. General Idea both appropriated and reinterpreted existing crests (often by replacing a lion with a poodle) as well as creating crests that were entirely of their own imagination. Between 1988 and 1989, General Idea created 8 chenille crests with some of their most iconic motifs. These crests recalled their traditional European antecedents and the aesthetics of high-school sports teams and varsity jackets. "Ouroboros" features General Idea's most famous mascot, the poodle, who mimics the lion's pose often seen in traditional European iconography. Entangled in the twists and curls of its tail, the poodle appears to be consuming the tip of it, embodying the full 'ouroboros' or circle of life. Completed in a menacing palette of black, forest green, and electric red, this design is a classic General Idea; subversive, zany, and mischievous. His multifaceted career, which included sculpture, performance, lectures, activism, and even a campaign for elected office, were all part of an “expanded concept of art” that was aimed at advancing his utopian vision. In all its forms, his work is dense and highly allusive and draws on much of the accumulated knowledge of Western civilization, including history, religion, natural sciences, economic theory, and myth. A charismatic teacher, Beuys was mentor to a generation of younger artists who were inspired by his passionate fusion of art, life, and activism. Service in World War II Beuys was born in Krefeld, Germany, and as a youth pursued dual interests in art and the natural sciences. In 1940, at age 19, he joined the German air force. During his 5 years of service, he was wounded several times and interned in a British prisoner-of-war camp. He returned home in 1945 physically and emotionally depleted, and spent nearly a decade recuperating on a friend’s farm, where he made hundreds of drawings and small sculptures. Coming to terms with his involvement in World War II would be a lifelong process that informed much of his art. Teaching at the Düsseldorf Art Academy, Sled After the war, Beuys decided to dedicate himself to art. It depicts two Asian faces in a cubist, fractured way, with a woman (or man) holding a photograph over his/her face. It is a proof print and is not signed or numbered. Emily Cheng (born in New York City, in 1953) is an American artist of Chinese ancestry. She is best known for large scale painting with a center focus often employing expansive circular images radiantly colored, radially composed. Cheng received her BFA in 1975 from the Rhode Island School of Design and attended the New York Studio School. Cheng has exhibited widely in the US and in Asia. In 2011, Cheng created Charting Sacred Territories, an exhibition exploring world religions which opened in the Museum of Contemporary Art Taipei (MOCA) , Taiwan (2011) and traveled to Hanart TZ Gallery in (2015), Shenzhen Art Museum, Shenzhen, China, (2015) and in Europe at the Palais Liechtenstein Feldkirch, Austria (2019). Cheng has had numerous solo shows in the US and in Asia and is represented by Hanart TZ Gallery in Hong Kong. In 2007, Timezone 8 published a monograph of Emily Cheng titled, Chasing Clouds, a decade of studies, with essays by Kevin Powers and Johnson Chang. Emily Cheng has lived and worked in New York City since 1977 and teaches Asian Art History at the School of Visual Arts. Influenced by a wide array of eastern and western artists including Van Gogh, Gauguin, Manet and Giacometti as well as de Kooning, early Philip Guston and Jackson Pollock. Nicolas Carone and Leland Bell were both among her teachers as well as Elaine de Kooning.
