Post-Impressionist Art

POSTIMPRESSIONIST STYLE

In the revolutionary wake of Impressionism, artists like Vincent van Gogh, Georges Seurat, Paul Cézanne and Paul Gauguin advanced the style further while firmly rejecting its limitations. Although the artists now associated with Postimpressionist art did not work as part of a group, they collectively employed an approach to expressing moments in time that was even more abstract than that of the Impressionists, and they shared an interest in moving away from naturalistic depictions to more subjective uses of vivid colors and light in their paintings.

The eighth and final Impressionist exhibition was held in Paris in 1886, and Postimpressionism — also spelled Post-Impressionism — is usually dated between then and 1905. The term “Postimpressionism” was coined by British curator and art critic Roger Fry in 1910 at the “Manet and the Postimpressionists” exhibition in London that connected their practices to the pioneering modernist art of Édouard Manet. Many Postimpressionist artists — most of whom lived in France — utilized thickly applied, vibrant pigments that emphasized the brushstrokes on the canvas.

The Postimpressionist movement’s iconic works of art include van Gogh’s The Starry Night (1889) and Seurat’s A Sunday on La Grande Jatte (1884). Seurat’s approach reflected the experimental spirit of Postimpressionism, as he used Pointillist dots of color that were mixed by the eye of the viewer rather than the hand of the artist. Van Gogh, meanwhile, often based his paintings on observation, yet instilled them with an emotional and personal perspective in which colors and forms did not mirror reality. Alongside Mary Cassatt, Cézanne, Henri Matisse and Gauguin, the Dutch painter was a pupil of Camille Pissarro, the groundbreaking Impressionist artist who boldly organized the first independent painting exhibitions in late-19th-century Paris.

The boundary-expanding work of the Postimpressionist painters, which focused on real-life subject matter and featured a prioritization of geometric forms, would inspire the Nabis, German Expressionism, Cubism and other modern art movements to continue to explore abstraction and challenge expectations for art.

Landscape with Gate by Orovida Pissarro - Drawing
Located in London, GB
*UK BUYERS WILL PAY AN ADDITIONAL 20% VAT ON TOP OF THE ABOVE PRICE Landscape with Gate by Orovida Pissarro (1893-1968) Pencil on paper 25.7 x 20.4 cm (10 ¹/₈ x 8 inches) Executed circa 1917 Artist biography: Orovida Camille Pissarro, Lucien and Esther Pissarro’s only child, was the first woman in the Pissarro family as well as the first of her generation to become an artist. Born in Epping, England in 1893, she lived and worked predominantly in London where she became a prominent member of several British arts clubs and societies. She first learned to paint in the Impressionist style of her father, but after a brief period of formal study with Walter Sickert in 1913 she renounced formal art schooling. Throughout her career, Orovida always remained outside of any mainstream British art movements. Much to Lucien's disappointment she soon turned away from naturalistic painting and developed her own unusual style combining elements of Japanese, Chinese, Persian and Indian art. Her rejection of Impressionism, which for the Pissarro family had become a way of life, together with the simultaneous decision to drop her famous last name and simply use Orovida as a ‘nom de peintre’, reflected a deep desire for independence and distance from the weight of the family legacy. Orovida's most distinctive and notable works were produced from the period of 1919 to 1939 using her own homemade egg tempera applied in thin, delicate washes to silk, linen or paper and sometimes embellished with brocade borders. These elegant and richly decorative works generally depict Eastern, Asian and African subjects, such as Mongolian horse...

Henry Ottmann (1877-1927) Nude in the studio, drawing signed

Henry Ottmann (1877-1927) Nude in the studio signed lower right Charcoal on paper 37.5 x 31.5 cm In good condition In a modern frame : 53 x 46.5 cm Published under n°414 of the artist's catalogue raisonné (p 167 reproduced) published by Bernard Toublanc-Michel, Paris 2020 This drawing is a particularly interesting and touching example of Henry Ottmann's art. It shows his special technique, which gives priority to a kind of blur, and in this case it serves very well this scene of intimacy as if captured by stealth. Henry Ottmann was born on 10 April 1877 in Ancenis. He made his debut at the Salon La Libre Esthétique in Brussels in 1904 and took part in the Salon des Indépendants in Paris from 1905, the Salon d'Automne, the Salon de la Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts and the Salon des Tuileries. In 1911 and 1912, Ottmann exhibited at the Artistes de la Société Moderne at the Gallery Paul Durand...

Nu avec des fleurs - Post-Impressionist Oil, Nude & Flowers - Georges D'Espagnat
Located in Marlow, Buckinghamshire
Signed nude oil on original canvas circa 1910 by French post impressionist painter Georges D'espagnat. The work depict a nude woman seated on a stall turned away from the artist. Paintings hang on the wall and there's a vase filled with pink and red flowers on the wooden mantlepiece beside her. Signature: Signed upper left Dimensions: Framed: 30"x26" Unframed: 22"x18" Provenance: Private French collection. Exhibition stamp verso From the beginning of his career, it was a constant concern of Georges d'Espagnet to assert his originality. His studies at the École des Arts Décoratifs, Paris, did not last very long, for he wanted immediate independence and decided to follow courses in the private academies of Montparnasse. In about 1900, he became acquainted with Maurice Denis, Bonnard and Vuillard, and his collaboration with Denis led to a renewal of religious art in France. In 1903, d'Espagnet was one of the founders of the Salon d'Automne, and was appointed professor in charge of studios at the École des Beaux-Arts, Paris, in 1934. He illustrated a number of books: Rémy de Gourmont's Evil Prayers ( Oraisons mauvaises) (1896), The Saints of Paradise ( Les Saintes du paradis) (1898), Simone (1907), Sistine ( Sixtine) (1922); Alphonse Daudet's The Immortal ( L'Immortel) (1930); André Gide's The Pastoral Symphony ( La Symphonie pastorale); Francis Jammes' Clearings in the Sky ( Chairières dans le ciel) (1948). D'Espagnet belongs to the group of artists who made the Courrier Français so successful. The drawings of his which are published in it are strongly expressive and some bear comparison with the designs of the great Renaissance masters. He also contributed to L'Image. He often placed cheerful nudes in a landscape, reminding us that, though he moved away from the Fauves, he retained their freedom of colour and arabesque. He painted many portraits, including those of Albert André, André Barbier...

Two Women in Boat, Impressionist Lithograph by Louis Marie Joseph Ridel
Located in Long Island City, NY
Louis Ridel, born February 12, 1866 in Vannes and died November 10, 1937 in Paris, is a painter, sculptor, medalist, French decorator. Louis Ridel studied at the Académie Julian then under the direction of Gustave Moreau at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1889 (with Matisse, Camoin, Marquet and Rouault). He exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français between 1893 and 1935, at the Salon des Tuileries between 1927 and 1934, the Universal Exhibition of Ghent in 1913 and the famous Georges Petit Gallery (1909-1910). The works of the artist are present in the museums of Nantes, Strasbourg, Pont-Aven but also Tokyo, Buenos Aires and Rio de Janeiro. This symbolist painter, friend of Aman-Jean, Maxence and Albert Besnard, represented essentially women of the bourgeoisie, ethereal and diaphanous or landscapes of his native region, Brittany. In 1896, he received an honorable mention from the Salon des artistes français, then a third class medal in 1898 and second class in 1900. In 1901, he was out of competition. In 1909, he was named Knight of the Legion of Honor. He receives official orders for the Senate, the Ministry of Public Works or the mayor of the 12th arrondissement of Paris. Two Women in Boat...

Located in Saint Augustine, FL
Artist: Henri Le Sidaner (French, 1862-1939) Title: "Le Perron (The Porch)" Portfolio: Gazette des Beaux-Arts *Issued unsigned, though signed by Sidaner in the plate (printed signature) lower right Year: 1911 Medium: Original Lithograph on soft-cream Simili Japon paper Limited edition: approx. 1,500 Printer: Maison Fortier and Marotte, Paris, France Publisher: Gazette des Beaux-Arts, Paris, France Reference: Sanchez and Seydoux 1911, No. 12 Sheet size: 10.75" x 7.13" Image size: 7.5" x 5.75" Condition: Light toning to sheet. It is otherwise a strong impression in excellent condition Notes: Printed in one color: blue. This lithograph was published by Gazette des Beaux-Arts. The Gazette des Beaux-Arts was a French art review, found in 1859 by Édouard Houssaye, with Charles Blanc as its first chief editor. Assia Visson Rubinstein was chief editor under the direction of George Wildenstein from 1928 until 1960. Her papers, which include all editions of the Gazette from this period, are intact at the Cantonal and University Library of Lausanne in Dorigny. The Gazette was a world reference work on art history for nearly 100 years - one other editor in chief, from 1955 to 1987, was Jean Adhémar. It was bought in 1928 by the Wildenstein family, whose last representative was Daniel Wildenstein, its director from 1963 until his death in 2001. The review closed in 2002. Biography: Sidaner, (7 August 1862 – July 1939), an intimist painter, born to a French family in Port Louis, Mauritius. In 1870 he and his family settled in Dunkirk. Le Sidaner received most of his tutelage from the École des Beaux-Arts under the instruction of Alexandre Cabanel but later broke away due to artistic differences. Between 1885 and 1894 Le Sidaner lived the year round at the Etaples art colony and was joined there by his childhood friend Eugène Chigot (1860–1923), who shared his interest in atmospheric light. Later Le Sidaner traveled extensively throughout France. He also visited many cities around the globe, as well as villages throughout Europe. He exhibited at the Salon, the Galeries Georges Petit in Paris and the Goupil Gallery in London, and settled in Gerberoy. Marcel Proust's mention of Le Sidaner's work in his novel In Search of Lost Time confirms its later reputation. In Sodom and Gomorrah...

'The White Bonnet', Paris, Royal Academy of Fine Arts, Copenhagen Art Museum
By Henrik Schouboe
Located in Santa Cruz, CA
Initialed lower left, 'H.S.' for Henrik Schouboe (Danish, 1876-1949) and painted circa 1915. Henrik Schouboe first studied at the Copenhagen's Royal Academy of Fine Arts from 1894-1901 and, from 1903-1910, in Italy and Paris. He was awarded numerous stipends and scholarships including the Larssen (1902-3) and the Akademie Scholarship in 1908. In 1906, he had exhibited for the first time at the Charlottenborg where his submitted entry was purchased by the leading Danish painter of the time, Kristian Zahrtmann, for his personal collection. Schouboe continued to exhibit both domestically and internationally for over thirty years and was the recipient of a variety of prizes, medals and juried awards including the purchase of his 1908 Charlottenborg entry, 'Young Couple in a Landscape', by the State Museum of Art for inclusion in the Danish national collection. Schouboe's work is held in the permanent collections of numerous museums including Copenhagen, Aabenraa, Maribo and the Aalborg Art Museums. We are pleased to offer a delicate and psychologically penetrating portrait of this beautiful and determined girl on the cusp of womanhood.
