Lisa Hilland "Spira" Side Table for Wigells Malmbäck, Sweden 2021
Located in Utrecht, NL
The “Spira” is a collection by Swedish product designer Lisa Hilland. This side table is a contemporary design with a poetic twist, combining modern high-tech production techniques with artisan quality craftsmanship. As it is with many contemporary pieces, this table balances on the line between sculpture and furniture. This sculptural object, reminiscent of a growing forest in nature, shows quality and attention down to the smallest detail. The line’s Swedish name, spira meaning spire, is self-explanatory, as the structure comprised of small, connecting oak spires. The individual spires are arranged in three levels in a wave pattern, which creates a sense of movement, especially on the top. The round, smooth tabletop is perfect to complement the design and to serve a functional role. Apart from its unique spire structure, this table features a lower level that was created for a pet, hence the cosy throw rug. This is a delightful feature, and has never gone into production, making this model exclusive and unique. With the Spira collection, Hilland highlights the wood's natural beauty and character with a strong focus on quality, maximum sustainability and environmental care. Spira is therefore manufactured exclusively from high-quality and environmentally friendly, socially responsible and economically viable forestry. Thanks to its outstanding design and Hilland’s emphasis on sustainability, the Spira series earned the Plaza Interior’s award of honour in 2021. Swedish furniture manufacturer, Wigells, has been manufacturing furniture for more than 140 years. They are best known for their wide range of wooden pieces. Everything is still manufactured in Malmbäck, Småland, where with great experience and craftsmanship, they give shape to high-quality pieces. Condition: In very good condition. Wear consistent with age and use. Dimensions: 29.33 in D x 29.52 in H 74.5 cm D x 75 cm H About the designer: Lisa Hilland (1973-) creates contemporary design with a poetic twist, combining modern high-tech production techniques with artisan quality craftsmanship. After graduating from Central St Martin's College of Art, she worked ten years as a designer in London before setting up her own studio in Sweden in 2005. Her current clients include renowned furniture producers such as Konsthantverk, IKEA, Gärsnäs, Gemla, Design House Stockholm...

Guillerme et Chambron, Oak & Smoked Glass Coffee Table, France, Mid-Century
By Guillerme et Chambron, Votre Maison
Located in New York, NY
Robert Guillerme studied design and architecture at the École Boule, graduating in 1934. After the Second World War he moved to Lille, in the north of France, where he decorated homes and designed furniture for the well regarded Rogier workshops. In 1948 Jacques Chambron left his work as a painter and decorator on the Rue Nollet in Paris, and relocated his family to join Guillerme. The two had met in 1940 while imprisoned by the Germans in East Prussia and bonded over, among other more obvious things, their shared passion for design. In 1949 the pair discovered Émile Dariosecq, a master cabinet maker who had a shop in the city, and who was willing to produce their designs. The three started Votre Maison. The association was destined to be as influential as prolific. Not only did Votre Maison produce over two thousand models during the later half of the twentieth century, it also left an indelible stamp on design of the 50s, 60s and 70s. The company’s output served as a model for a vast field of livable contemporaneous design. The soul of Guillerme et Chambron’s work was in the company’s name (“Your House"). Their focus was as keenly attuned to functionality—furniture’s use in daily life—as to the creation of innovative design. For the pair of designers the home was envisioned as a place where the family could live both comfortably and in aesthetic harmony. Robert Guillerme, who designed most of the work, possessed a limitless creative ambition, producing designs for everything from grand dressers and sideboards to the smallest elements of a space, such as pedestals, shelving, benches, and lighting. This steady output of beautiful furniture bucked convention not merely in the equal emphasis Guillerme placed on function and aesthetics, but in the almost paradoxical creation...

Stacklab, "Gold Cube", Contemporary Side Table, Canada, 2016
By STACKLAB
Located in New York, NY
The Cube Series was first founded in 2013 through a partnership with an engineer-turned-concrete-artisan in Toronto to make productive (re)-use of a historic, decommissioned pump pattern that had been in storage locally for over a half century. Patterns are the original ‘positives’ used in the production of sand-cast metal parts, a method of casting dating back to 1300BC. While patterns are still commonly used in manufacturing, they are regularly decommissioned and archived in response to industry innovation. There is a growing abundance of unproductive Industrial patterns in foundries and factories. STACKLAB identified that storing these patterns indefinitely is a notable waste of space and resources - especially in a city like Toronto with high rents and high utility costs. For this series, STACKLAB focused specifically on repurposing patterns from 1890-1950. During this period, patterns were often hand carved by skilled craftspeople whose specialized knowledge of metallurgy and woodworking has been mostly forgotten in today’s era of computer-aided manufacturing. The Cube Series proposed a system for converting disused historic patterns into molds to create contemporary sculptural furnishing. The result is The Cube Series that reintegrates decommissioned manufacturing materials into the scaled production of useful, modern objects...
