An exceptional late 19th century gilt bronze-mounted Louis XVI style commode.

A marble top above a frieze set with three drawers with pierced laurel decoration, over three garland-hung cupboard doors each with shelves, the sides similarly decorated, on toupie feet.
Signed Henry Dasson 1879 to the bronze mount on the side and stamped Henry Dasson 1879 twice to the back of the carcass.
After the very famous 18th century model by Martin Carlin.
Henry Dasson was considered one of the finest makers of gilt bronze-mounted furniture in the 19th century. He established a workshop at 106 rue Vieille-du-Temple, Paris, and specialised in the production of Louis XIV, Louis XV and Louis XVI style furniture using the very finest ormolu mounts with the highest quality mercury gilding. In 1871, Dasson purchase Charles-Guillaume Winckelsen business and remaining stock.
Dasson exhibited at the 1878 and 1889 Paris Exhibition. He displayed Louis XV and XVI styles as well as pieces of his own modified eighteenth century design. The exhibits in 1878 included a table entirely in gilt bronze, purchased by Lord Dudley.
Martin Carlin (ca 1730 – 1785) was a Parisian ébéniste, born at Freiburg, who was received master at Paris in 1766.
Carlin worked at first in the shop of Jean-François Oeben, whose sister he married. He set up independently in the Faubourg Saint-Antoine, an unfashionable quarter of Paris, where few of his wealthy clientele would have penetrated. Carlin sold his works exclusively to marchands-merciers such as Simon-Philippe Poirier and his partner Dominique Daguerre, who acted as decorator-designers. It was only through these entrepreneurs that Carlin could acquire the Sèvres Porcelain plaques that decorate many of his pieces. His earliest such pieces are datable by the marks on their porcelain to 1766; they followed designs supplied by the dealer Poirier. This fine clock set is crafted in patinated bronze, red marble and ornamented throughout with exquisite ormolu. It is the work of Lemerle-Charpentier & Cie, a French company highly celebrated for their superlative clock sets and garnitures.
The set comprises a central clock and a pair of flanking candelabra. The clock is set on an oval plinth of red marble with ormolu feet. To the front of the plinth is set a relief panel in patinated bronze. Upon the plinth is set a fluted column of patinated bronze with ormolu flowers and banding, surmounted by an ormolu urn. The circular clock dial is set to the front of the column, with a face of red marble and Roman numerals in ormolu. Next to the clock face column stands the full length figure of the Greek goddess of hunting, Diana, holding a torch cast in patinated bronze. A pleasing landscape painting of a plough team at rest next to a barn by Thomas Blinks. Three horses are shown eating hay from a cart in the shade of a barn. Two figures and a dog are also depicted taking their repast. On the left of the scene, open fields can be seen through a gate whilst in the far distance a church and other buildings can be made out on the brow of a hill.
Thomas Blinks was born in Maidstone, Kent on 29 October 1853 to Richard Blinks and Eleanor Poile. His father was a master butcher in Ticehurst and the family lived above the shop, which is still operates as a butchers today. Thomas initially worked for his father but his talent for art soon took him in another direction.
He married Louisa Anne Winterbottom on 11 April 1874, at Rye, Sussex and together they had 3 children. They lived in Hawkhurst, Kent before moving to Hackney, London in 1878. Whilst largely self- taught, Blinks would have learnt basic anatomy from working with his father, but he also spent time at Tattersalls canine and horse auctions...

Constructed in a strongly grained olivewood and dressed with gold brass inlays and an etched and engraved brass panel; rising from a plinth base, the lockable single door having an inset panel in the manner of Jean Berain, enclosing a shelved interior, and flanked by narrow vertical conforming panels; the apron being dressed with three bronze rosettes, and the Jura Jaune marble is dressed with a three quarter arcaded brass gallery,

The cabinet is illustrated and discussed in Christopher Payne’s “British Furniture 1820 to 1920” published in 2023. Payne singles out the rarity of the olivewood timber used as well as the necessity for hand cutting the large marquetry panel.

This fine antique Victorian sterling silver and cut glass claret jug has a circular rounded, globular form.
The cylindrical neck is fitted with a fine and impressive plain sterling silver hallmarked mount with the original hallmarked flat hinged cover.
The cover is surmounted with a simplified tri-lobed silver thumb piece.
This antique claret jug is fitted with a plain angular rounded handle with scrolling upper terminal and featuring a leaf ornamentation to the lower portion.
The glass body of the jug is embellished with a cut glass swirl design to either side, conjoining with undulating bands to the circumference.
The body of this impressive claret jug is further ornamented with a star cut base.
Condition
This antique sterling silver and glass claret jug is an exceptional gauge of silver, fine quality and in excellent condition. The glass is in perfect condition. Full hallmarks struck to the surface and part hallmarks to the cover have wear due to their location and in keeping with age; the maker's mark to the cover and the mount are not deeply struck but remain legible.

(Often much debate is had as to whether miniature furniture was
made as an apprentice piece, which is when a craftsmen who is looking
for a job at a workshop would create something to showcase
their talents, or whether it was made as a travelling salesmans
sample piece, which is when a few articles were made as
scale models in advance of a road trip during which the salesman
would travel the country showing prospective clients
the kind of items they could produce back at the workshop and
take orders from. This particular miniature chest of drawers
is probably the latter and would have been made as a sample
piece. The construction is exquisite and the attention to tiny
detail phenomenal in all honesty. They work that would have
gone into constructing this with all of its fine details would actually
have been more of a challenge and taken a more skilled
craftsmen than its full size counterparts would have done.
It is also super quality and unusual being constructed from burr
oak which has taken on an exceptional rich colour and patina
over the years of its life. A really quite charming piece of
antique miniature furniture...

The plate originally was in a square box with an insert that read-
"We are happy to send you a New Year's present. These plates have been created especially for us by Piero Fornasetti in Milano. Each year you will receive more until the end of the series. We wish you and your family a very happy New Year.
