Josef Albers Homage to the Square (from "Son oeuvre et sa contribution à la figuration visuelle au cours du XXe siècle") 1972 Silkscreen Print in brilliant colors on wove paper Image Size: 8.75 × 8.75 inches(22.23 × 22.23 cm) Sheet Size (approx.): 10.5 × 12 inches (26.67 × 30.48 cm) Framed Size: 13 × 13 × 0.5 inches (33.02 × 33.02 × 1.27 cm) Unsigned; as published Edition: ~1,500; not individually numbered Published by Dessain et Tolra – 1972 Printed with an additional image verso as issued Serigraphs by Herbert Geier, Ingolstadt, Germany & Ives-Sillman, Inc., New Haven, Connecticut, USA The Homage to the Square series is Josef Albers’s most celebrated and influential body of work, produced between 1950 and his death in 1976. Consisting of hundreds of paintings, the series explores the interaction of color through a deceptively simple compositional structure: nested squares arranged concentrically on a flat surface. Despite its geometric restraint, the work is fundamentally about perception—how colors shift, advance, recede, and transform in relation to one another. Albers applied paint directly from the tube using a palette knife, avoiding visible brushwork to eliminate gesture and emphasize color relationships as the primary subject. Each composition is carefully calibrated, demonstrating how identical colors can appear dramatically different depending on their surrounding context. The result is a dynamic visual experience in which depth, vibration, and spatial illusion emerge purely through chromatic interaction. The series reflects Albers’s theoretical contributions, particularly his seminal book Interaction of Color (1963), in which he articulated his belief that color is relative rather than absolute. Rather than expressing emotion through imagery, Albers invites the viewer into an active perceptual process, making the act of seeing itself the central theme. Homage to the Square remains a cornerstone of modernist abstraction and color theory, influencing generations of artists, designers, and architects. Works from the series are held in major museum collections worldwide and continue to be studied for their rigorous investigation of visual perception. Homage to the Square, Josef Albers square...

February 3, 2004 - March 27, 2004. Collections: Art Institute of Chicago, Clark Center for Japanese Art and Culture, Minneapolis Institute of Art, University of California Merced, University of Oregon (The Lavenberg Collection of Japanese Prints). ABOUT THE ARTIST Yoshida Toshi (1911-1995) began training at the age of 14 under his father, Yoshida Hiroshi, one of the most acclaimed artists of the Japanese 20th-century printmaking revival movement shin-hanga (’new prints’ created in the traditional collaborative system of Japanese printmaking). He studied from 1932 to 1935 at the Taiheiyo-Gakai (Pacific Painting Association), co-founded by his father. Before the Pacific War, Toshi traveled widely with his father in Asia, Europe, Egypt, and the United States. Later he continued his worldwide travels, especially in Mexico, the United States, Canada, and Africa. Following his father’s death in 1950, Toshi began his very personal exploration of abstraction, joining the sôsaku-hanga movement (’creative prints’ wherein the artist is creator, carver, and printer). During this richly creative period (1954 to 1973), Toshi created over three hundred nonobjective designs. In the early 1960s, Toshi returned to large-scale figurative work, concentrating on scenes of African wildlife in its natural habitat, and in 1984 he published the first of many illustrated children's books on African wildlife (Dobutsu Ehon Shirizu), which he continued to produce until the early 1990s. In 1966 he published a book with the artist Yuki Rei...

Salvador Dalì Surrealist Modern Signed Work on Paper
Salvador Dalì Surrealist Modern Signed Work on Paper

Salvador Dalì Surrealist Modern Signed Work on Paper

By Salvador Dalí

Located in Roma, IT

This important artwork is an original color lithograph by Salvador Dalí titled "Don José" from his famous Carmensuite. Created in 1968, this specific impression is a rare "Artist's proof" designated by the pencil inscription "artist proof" in the lower-left margin. This artwork, never before on the market, comes from an important Italian private collection. Our company has been present on this platform for many years, with more than 100 sales made and just as many excellent reviews received that you can under our Furniture account. The artwork is also protected by glass This artwork, upon request, is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity issued by an official Expert in Italian furniture for the Chamber of Commerce of Rome and for the Rome Civil Courts. The composition It is characterised by a highly dynamic and contrasting color scheme relies on saturated, expressive reds in the lower-left corner balanced by deep, brooding blues and earthy ochres/sanguine tones making up the central figure. The background features muted, atmospheric gray and green washes to simulate a turbulent, twilight sky. The composition uses an asymmetrical, vertical orientation dominated by a colossal, central figure towering over a fragmented architectural landscape. The perspective is intentionally distorted to emphasize a dreamlike, theatrical space. In this wonderful artwork are presents many surrealist iconography elements. On the the central figure is represented Don José; the character's form is severely elongated and spindly, bearing hallmarks of Dalí’s fascination with gaunt, skeletal figures. The anatomy transitions from fluid gestural lines to an almost root-like structure near the base. Atop the figure's head sits a prominent, black geometric cage resembling a street lantern or polyhedral framework. This structure acts as a visual anchor and source of dramatic light rays radiating downwards. To the right, a detailed architectural elements, surrealist cathedral/church façade rises with a crucifix, complete with an intricate, wheel-like window resembling an anatomical eye...

Bring Abstract Prints into Your Home Today

Explore a vast range of abstract prints on 1stDibs to find a piece to enhance your existing collection or transform a space.

Unlike figurative paintings and other figurative art, which focuses on realism and representational perspectives, abstract art concentrates on visual interpretation. An artist may use a single color or simple geometric forms to create a world of depth. Printmaking has a rich history of abstraction. Through materials like stone, metal, wood and wax, an image can be transferred from one surface to another.

During the 19th century, iconic artists, including Edvard Munch, Paul Cézanne, Georgiana Houghton and others, began exploring works based on shapes and colors. This was a departure from the academic conventions of European painting and would influence the rise of 20th-century abstraction and its pioneers, like Pablo Picasso and Piet Mondrian.

Some leaders of European abstraction, including Franz Kline, were influenced by the gestural shapes of East Asian calligraphy. Calligraphy interprets poetry, songs, symbols or other means of storytelling into art, from works on paper in Japan to elements of Islamic architecture.

Bold, daring and expressive, abstract art is constantly evolving and dazzling viewers. And entire genres have blossomed from it, such as Color Field painting and Minimalism.

The collection of abstract art prints on 1stDibs includes etchings, lithographs, screen-prints and other works, and you can find prints by artists such as Joan Miró, Alexander Calder and more.
