Kerry James Marshall's 2011 "Keeping the Culture" is based upon the artist's eponymous painting done the year earlier. Marshall, along with his dealer, were voted by ArtReview the top two of the 100 most influential people in the art world of 2018 - even ahead of the #MeToo movement, and ahead of figures like Jeff Koons, Larry Gagosian and Eli Broad! His paintings now sell for tens of millions of dollars - after P. Diddy paid $21 million for a painting. The present work "Keeping the Culture" is an extremely desirable work of art and exemplifies Marshall's style. As dazzling as the Warhol show was in 2019 at the new Whitney Museum -- only his show in the late 1970s at the old Whitney Museum, could offer this Deluxe limited edition collectors item - hand signed and numbered by Andy Warhol - because the latter was published during his lifetime. This rare 1979 First (and only) Edition hardback monograph is held in the original slipcase, and is hand signed by Andy Warhol and numbered 108 out of only 200 on the first front end page (see image). This collectors item features text, accompanied by 120 full page color offset lithograph bound, double sided plates on regular pages. (Total pages are: 145) It was published by the Whitney Museum in collaboration with Random House, in conjunction with the exhibition held at the Whitney Museum of American Art, November 20, 1979 to January 27, 1980. The long sold out Limited Edition produced on the occasion of Julio Le Parc’s exhibition at the Serpentine Gallery in the UK is a silkscreen print of a dartboard, part of the playful installation Choisissez vos Ennemis (1970) from his Jeux Enquête series, which was featured in the show. This series was borne from the civil unrest in France and the events of May 1968. It depicts social archetypes of different ranks: the imperialist, the capitalist, the military, the intellectual neutral, the policeman, and the indifferent.
Julio Le Parc was born in Mendoza, Argentina in 1928 and currently lives and works in Paris where he has resided since the late 1950s. In 1964 he was awarded the Special Prize (acquisition) in the Premio Internacional Torcuato Di Tella, Buenos Aires, Argentina, and in 1996, the International Painting Grand Prix at the XXXIII Venice Biennial, Italy. Following his expulsion from Paris in 1968, he travelled around various European countries only to return five months later when the restriction was revoked. Le Parc participated in Unofficial Latin America, held in Paris, and the Medellín Biennial in Colombia in 1970. Le Parc held his first solo exhibition at the Howard Wise Gallery, New York (1966), which was followed his first retrospective exhibition, held at the Instituto Di Tella in Buenos Aires, Argentina (1967). Subsequently Le Parc has held numerous retrospective exhibitions in major museums in Havana, Düsseldorf, Montevideo, Caracas, Asunción, Mexico City, Stockholm, Berlin, Madrid, Barcelona, Santiago de Chile, and Porto Alegre. His most recent solo exhibitions were held at the Palais de Tokyo in Paris (2013) and at the Daros Foundation (2014). Notable writings include: A propósito de arte espectáculo... (With regard to spectacle art...); Función social del arte en la sociedad contemporánea (The social function of art in contemporary society); Color 1959 (Colour 1959); and El artista en el context social actual (The artist in the present social context). The creation of this poster was part of a larger series initiated by Pierre Sautet, the Deputy Commercial Director of Air France. Mathieu began working on these posters a year earlier and completed the series in 1967.
