Alex Selkowitz Art
Alex Selkowitz is a contemporary painter. He is inspired by the city's juxtaposition of urban sprawl and green spaces. His process begins with snapshots of his surroundings, which are sketched and used as studies for his paintings. By the time the image makes its way to the canvas, it has undergone various stages of fragmentation to disrupt the linear elements in a composition. The result is a striking image negotiating the balance between physical encounters and faded memory.

This painting is part of a series of whimsical foxes. For these pieces, Tara has a collection of small toy foxes that she sets up like a still life for reference. I needed a dark background to offset the desert sand and warm hues of the fox, so I added in a dark sky flecked with little stars, Tara explains of this painting. I think of foxes as mystical creatures, leading the viewer to an otherworldly destination.

"For this painting I got inspired to paint something very small with lots of details," says Jose. "On the matchbox I painted the smallest copy of a painting that I have every painted. The copy is of a self portrait painting of Elisabeth Vigee Le Brun. This type of vintage matchbox...

When I lived in New Mexico, I painted humming birds into my landscapes, like this image of a bright bird resting in a thicket of red desert blooms, says Tara. A dark night sky sets off the contrast of gestural brushstrokes. Tara frequently covers her canvas in a purple wash of paint before painting. You may notice the flicker of purple in the background, in between the rich reds, greens and golds.
