Antique Indian Square Cotton Dhurrie with Geometric Border, Circa 1900
Located in Milan, IT
The weaving of flat-woven cotton carpets known as dhurries is cited in Mughal chronicles of the 15th century. Probably one of the earliest forms of floor covering, dhurries were woven in various formats according to their function, which range from bed covers to prayer mats. Most were produced in the northern region of Rajasthan, almost always in the local jails. These were often commissioned for specific areas of the Maharaja's palaces.
This very unusual example has a perfectly square format, and was probably commissioned for a specific place of a palace. It's signed by the weaver (N.N. Shah) and it's distinguished for its unique cranberry red open field framed by a stunning geometric border with a pattern reminiscent of antique African textiles.

A real masterpiece of antique tribal...

Fine Antique Blue Ground Qarabagh Kelleh Rug

Known in the old rug literature as ‘Gentleman’s carpets’, Qarabagh long rugs such as this one represent a classic late nineteenth century type which became quite popular in the West, especially because of its traditional kelleh format, in which the length is almost exactly twice of the width of the rug.. These soon became synonymous of great understated elegance and are still coveted for its 'Old World' feeling. The minute repeat...

Mid-Century Modern Vintage Kurdish Tulu with Dotted Polychrome Background

Tulu rugs represent one of the earliest forms of nomadic pile weaving, typically knotted with a medium-high pile as they were meant as bedding rugs for the tent. The patterns are quite simple, ranging from completely open fields to stacked niches, with basic geometric patterns such as the one here representing some interesting variants. Here the field is embellished by an infinite repeat dotted pattern, which gains momentum by virtue of the irregular colour variations of the background, creating a syncopated and colourful stripe...

Early Chinese Kangxi Period '1662-1722' Ningxia Rug with Blossom Palmettes
Located in Milan, IT
A very unusual Chinese rug, possibly used originally as a dais cover, which had been previously attributed to the Western region of Gansu (H. König, Gansu, Hali 138, London 2005, pl. 13, p. 58). However both the structure and the colours are fairly typical of Ningxia weavings from the Kangxi period (1662-1722), which marks the first Qing Dynasty empire following the Ming Dynasty and which still carries much of its iconography. Of particular note are the four stylised blue dragons on a coral background which decorate the corners of the composition. A true masterpiece of early Chinese textile art.

Antique Geometric Design Chinese Rug with Polychrome Diamonds
Located in Milan, IT
There is a group of later Chinese carpets which are characterized by geometric, often abstract patterns that seem inspired by Western sensibilities. What is puzzling however is that most of these weavings have been sourced in recent years in China itself, where they have been used in households ever since they were made. Whatever its origin, the resulting pattern of coloured lozenges has an outstanding three dimensional quality, and can be compared to the most important objects of twentieth century design.
