A vivid and colourful painting full of energy and movement. Very distinctive of Øllgaard's abstract style in the 1930s and to which he returned in the 1960s. We can feel the influences of his friends and fellow artists Max Ernst, Jean Arp, Vasily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, Jean Miro, Piet Mondrian and Yves Tanguy. A striking and powerful work by an important artist of his day.
Hans Øllgaard, knew early on that he wanted to be a painter. After graduating in 1929 he began his studies, but as he was too young to attend the Academy of Fine Arts he became a private pupil of Aksel Jørgensen, who also became his professor at the academy, where he began in 1933.

Early 20th Century French pastel drawing of a beach scene in the South of France by noted fauvist artist Auguste Chabaud. Carrying the stamped atelier signature, possibly from his 'Blue Period'.
Auguste CHABAUD was born in Nîmes on October 3, 1882.
At the age of fourteen Chabaud joined the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Avignon. In 1899 he went to Paris to continue his artistic training at the Academie Julian and the Ecole des Beaux Arts. There he met Henri Matisse and André Derain. In 1900 he returned to his parents' vineyard in southern France briefly before returning to Paris.
In 1901, he was forced to leave Paris again in order to secure his livelihood. He worked on a ship and got to know the West African coast. Upon his return in 1907 and in the following years, he became acquainted with and captured in his paintings the excitement of the Parisian nightlife. In the Paris neighbourhood Montmartre, where he had his studio, he painted various scenes of Parisian life and cafe society.
At the same time, he continued to paint Provence and took part in the Salon des Indépendants and the Salon d’Automne, where he exhibited with the Fauves.
Chabaud's Cubist phase began in 1911, where he also began sculpting. In the following years he had many exhibitions, including 1913 in New York, where his works were exhibited alongside those of artists such as Matisse, Derain, Vlaminck and Picasso.
After his return from the first World War Chabaud settled down in Graveson. From 1920 he had his "blue period". He used the Prussian Blue as the only colour in his works. From then, he focused exclusively on the south of France. He painted scenes of rural life, the farmers, and the hills and trails of the Alpilles.
A very important retrospective exhibition of his work took place in Paris in 1952, which gave him the opportunity to return to Paris, which he had left in 1914. Another retrospective exhibition in Paris took place in 1965 commemorating the tenth anniversary of his death.
He died in 1955 in Graveson.

A magnificent and truly monumental work of a 'deconstructed' head and three other triptych elements. Influenced by the paintings of Francis Bacon and Salvador Dali the work is intriguing and arresting at the same time. We can see how Muir gained such success later for his sculptural pieces as he is even in this work thinking in three dimensions. On closer inspection the details reveal themselves, the eyeball reminiscent of the shell of a horse chestnut, the furry surface to the tongue all in soft pastel shades. The three upper elements, in monochrome revealing the development of man. A really intriguing and strong painting that would grace any interior and be the talking point of any collection.
It is very unusual to find a pastel of these proportions. The medium itself gives the work a softness creating an intriguing juxtaposition to the subject itself.
Sculptor, born in Hawick, Gordon Muir was educated at art colleges in London, Scotland and the University of New Mexico, after which he spent time working with woodblock artists in Japan. This gallery was well-known during the 1930s as fine art dealers and frame makers – it was located off Trafalgar square.
Though he often signed with his full name Ruskin Spear's work on paper 'Hammersmith Grove' is signed in the same initials as our work and hence the attribution. This work is also stylistically similar to his other drawings of seascapes and coastal landscapes.
This is a charming and fresh view of a coastal landscape probably the Jurassic coast of Dorset or his beloved Cornwall. The vertiginous composition gives it an angular almost abstract form highlighted by the contrast between the colour of the rockface, the vegetation and the blue sea. The work is in nice condition and wonderful to have the original framing.

Cookham Dean, A Post Impressionist Landscape, Homage to Cezanne

An English Post Impressionist gouache of trees in a landscape by noted artist Bernard Meninsky. The painting is signed bottom right and presented in a very fine custom patinated and gilt frame with cloth insert, under glass. There is an exhibition label to the back of the frame, giving the painting's location 'Cookham Dean' in Berkshire near the home of noted contemporary of Meninsky, Stanley Spencer.
Provenance: The Boydell Galleries, Liverpool.
A charming work when Meninsky was clearly showing the influence and his love for the paintings of Cezanne. The simplification of forms, as well as the flattening of landscape and the use of colour to give perspective. An earlier work by Meninsky but important in his artistic journey to his evolving style.
Bernard Meninsky (25 July 1891–12 February 1950) was a British painter of figures and landscapes in oils, watercolour and gouache, a draughtsman and a teacher.
Meninsky was born in Konotop, modern-day Ukraine, where his father was a tailor and the family were Yiddish-speaking Ukrainian Jews. They moved to Liverpool when Bernard was six weeks old.
Although Meninsky left school at the age of eleven, his talent for art was demonstrated by the sale of a drawing to a local comic postcard business. While working as an errand boy during the day, he attended free classes in art in the evenings, and these enabled him to gain a place at the Liverpool School of Art. He studied there from 1906 to 1911, being financed by a succession of scholarships. He attended summer courses at the Royal College of Art, London, in August 1909 and August 1910, and in 1911 he won a scholarship to study at the Académie Julian in Paris for three months.
With financial support from the Liverpool Jewish community and the Jewish Educational Aid Society (JEAS), Meninsky studied at the Slade School of Fine Art in London in 1912. His contemporaries there included David Bomberg, Isaac Rosenberg...

A charming coloured drawing of a Provencal musical band. The French equivalent of a 'mariachi band'. Two trumpet players, a tuba and a drum. The musicians are all wearing straw 'boater' hats and striped blazers. In the background is the terrace of a café with its green tables. Arene has captured, with a lightness of touch, all the excitement and animation of the scene.
Jean Arène was a student of August Chabaud, a highly sought after French artist in Provence who in turn took his inspiration from Cezanne.
After a stint in 1949 at the School of Fine Arts in Marseille, then a year in Paris in 1950 with the poster artist Paul Colin, Jean Arène returned to Marseille the following year where he founded the "Group of under 30' with Trofimoff, Trabuc, Zutter and Mela and began painting as an autodidact, while earning a living in advertising and decoration.
His first exhibition dates from 1956. Then, from 1957, Jean Arène left the city for the countryside, which served as his base for many trips, often hitchhiking and backpacking, but always accompanied by a pencil and a sketchbook: Spain, Morocco in 1957, West Africa in 1960, (followed by an exhibition in Dakar), Northern Europe (Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Lapland , Lofoten, Netherlands and Belgium) In 1963 a trip to Tunisia. Then in 1966 his first retrospective in Toulon.
In 1970 Arène left for the United States and Mexico, followed two years later by West Africa again: Tassili, the Sahara and Algeria.

A fresh and charming view of trees in a landscape. Decaux has used simple, fluid but strong strokes for this composition. One can feel the influence of 'abstraction of form' that was a part of his later work. The eye is drawn from the trees to the surrounding fields, the touches of colour to the right and then to the silhouette of the hills beyond. The use of watercolour at its best.

A French drawing and watercolour portrait of a Breton Girl by Renée Béja noted pupil of Fernand leger. The work is signed on the right margin and presented in a gilt frame with a fine cut card mount.
A wonderful character portrait of a girl in traditional Breton costume and head dress. Beja has completed a pencil drawing and then used washes, watercolour and gouache to give the composition life. Lifelike flesh tones and the blue of the subjects eyes give the whole a charming intimacy.
Renée Anne Béja was a French painter and theatre decorator of Greek origin born in Thessaloniki (Ottoman Empire, today in Greece) on July 4, 1905
Renée Béja was still a young child when the family moved to Solliès-Pont in France, where her father worked as a flour miller at the Crédit Agricole.
In the 1930s, Renée Béja was a pupil of Fernand Léger. Between 1935 and 1938, she exhibited at the Salon des Tuileries, presenting mainly Views of the Périgord, she also participated in 1938 in the Salon d'Automne and the Salon des Indépendants.
During the Second World War, Renée Béja, her husband and some of her family were saved by being hidden by Eugène Viès, executive of the SNCF in Solliès-Pont, the industrialist Étienne Arnaud and the secretary of the town hall registering them under a false name on the register of inhabitants, so as to entitle them to food tickets. A Gestapo raid, however, meant that the Béja family had to leave Solliès-Pont for Saint-Paul-Trois-Châteaux, always with the help of Eugène Viès and his wife Walda, to whom the Yad Vashem Institute has since awarded the title of Righteous Among the Nations.
Based at 41, rue Blomet in Paris, Renée Béja then also worked as a decorator for the theatre. She created the sets, costumes and masks for the play Les Choéphores by Aeschylus, performed in the great amphitheatre of the Sorbonne in June 1949, then at the Palais des Papes as part of the Avignon Festival in July 1950.
The works of René Béjà, including portraits, nudes, still lifes, landscapes of Provence, Brittany and Paris, were presented at the Salon du Gemmail in Tours, stylistically, as with her colleague Andrée Bordeaux-Le Pecq, post-cubist and abstract experiments, but also classifying it, with Germaine Lacaze, Marguerite Bermond, Geneviève Gavrel and Guillemette Morand...
