Rare 19th Century French Doors with Capriccio Oil Painting and Chinoiserie Verso
Located in Dallas, TX
Truly a one-of-a-kind set of architecturals, these French doors feature a lovely capriccio oil painting on one side and a lacquered Chinoiserie on the verso. Dating to the 1800s, the wood frames on the front side of the doors (as seen in the main photo) have been painted true white more recently. Raised layers of molding surround a large landscape painting of ochre, brown, and gold. A protruding cornice of rounded molding adorns the frames just below the canvas, above a carved rectangular molding and raised kickplate. The capriccio (a capriccio is an architectural fantasy painting) depicts a massive, bifurcated round staircase surrounding a large outdoor fountain...

Antique French 2-Piece Cast Iron Dolphin Fountain, Circa 1900
Located in Dallas, TX
Dating to circa 1900, this French dolphin fountain consists of two pieces of cast iron that have developed a wonderful oxidized and verdigris patina. The vertical dolphin has a rising tail that intertwines around a bouquet of typha (commonly referred to as cattail or bulrush). Designed to be affixed to a wall, the downward-facing dolphin has an open mouth, allowing water to fill the scalloped shell basin below. The basin has a height of five and a quarter inches, with an existing drainage hole. Both items are highly detailed, from scales of the dolphin to the striations of the shell. The iron has developed a greenish-brown patina with traces of orange oxidation, resulting in exposure to the elements. Our two-piece cast iron dolphin...

Hexagonal Garden Jardiniere or Fountain Element from Aix-en-Provence, 20th C.
Located in Dallas, TX
Hailing from Aix-en-Provence in the South of France and dating to the 1900s, this fountain element was cast in four sections. The soft cream-color has developed a mottled patina of brown, black, and gray on the basin, while the angular column has significantly less speckling. A hexagonal basin with slender and protruding quarter-round edges sits on top of a similarly shaped column, also adorned with thinly projected moldings and a beveled base. Inside the bowl is an elevated platform, carved with a removable door, making it ideal for housing a pump for a fountain or water jet. The platform and door can be removed, allowing the hexagonal basin to be utilized as an elevated planter...

Pair of Circa 1750 Walnut Wood Entry Doors from Spain
Located in Dallas, TX
Spanish furniture and architecturals of the 18th century, such as this pair of walnut wood entry doors, were highly influenced by French stylings. Hand-carved circa 1750, the doors feature deep, sinuous moldings, reminiscent of the curvaceous motifs seen during the reign of Louis XV. The amazing doors have a rich brown patina that accentuates the charm of the carvings, which are also enhanced by the visible screws used to join the pieces of walnut wood. Comprised of five carved panels per door, each carving is similar: a rough rectangle with rounded ends and barbed counter curves. The three smaller panels are orientated horizontally, surrounding the two larger and vertically arranged panels. A thickly scrolled bronze pull can be seen on each door, also functioning as door knockers (the door on the right has commensurate wear from the pull striking the wood). Because these Spanish entry doors...

19th Century French Square Carved Limestone Trough or Sink
Located in Dallas, TX
Stone troughs have been used to water livestock in rural Europe for many centuries so it’s often difficult to date them. However, it is known that they were replaced by cast iron models in the mid-19th century, placing the creation of this French limestone trough or sink most likely in the early- to mid-1800s. Hand-carved from one piece, the roughly rectangular stone with 3 ¼” thick walls has an interesting, striated palette, most likely indicating that the bottom of the trough was obscured from the elements. The top of the trough has a light gray appearance with areas of light green, orange, and black patina, while the lower section has a white hue with a continuation of the accumulation seen above. Two drainage holes on one side allow the trough to be used as a garden planter or the basin of a courtyard...

Well Carved Italian Limestone Planter or Fountain Element, H-45 Inches
Located in Dallas, TX
Standing over 45 inches tall, this well-carved limestone planter or fountain element would have a commanding presence in any landscape installation. Hand-carved in Italy in two sections (the basin is separate from the column/plinth section), a central drainage hole runs through both sections, allowing it to be plumbed for a fountain, either as a spill bowl or with a vertical jet. The basin is six inches tall and has a diameter of almost 30 inches and is adorned with two layers of gadroon separated by a deep cavetto cornice. Interestingly, the bottom ring of lobes terminates beneath a large, attenuated leaf that can be seen under the basin. The beautifully carved basin is supported by an equally impressive, fluted column above a bulbous third section of gadroon. A thickly molded circular plinth with a large leaf cup offers stability and additional aesthetic appeal. The light gray stone has developed a mottled white, gold, and black patina with green and brown moss/lichen accumulation. Our Italian limestone planter could be used in a garden as an elevated planter...

Antique French Carved Stone Fountain Facade from Paris, Circa 1900
Located in Dallas, TX
A stylized depiction of the first appearance of the Greek goddess, Aphrodite, this fountain façade was hand-carved in limestone in Paris. Although there are several theories about the creation of Aphrodite, one of the most common legends is that she mysteriously arose from the Mediterranean Sea, either near Cyprus or the Greek Island of Kythira. Carved in mid-relief, the face of Aphrodite can be seen encircled by various seashells as if she were emerging from the water. Above her head is another large shell, flanked by a pair of volutes that comprise the double-arched top of the stone. Aphrodite’s mouth has been carved agape, with an opening of ¾ of an inch, allowing the façade to be paired with a basin for a cascading water fountain...

Antique French Nero Marquina Marble Fireplace Mantel, Circa 1880
Located in Dallas, TX
Featuring Louis XIV-style elements, this French fireplace mantel was hand-carved circa 1880 out of an elegant nero marquina marble. Quarried in the town of Marquina, in the Basque Country, this marble was quite popular during the 1800’s, often used as flooring and for fireplaces. The deep black stone has variegated white veining throughout, enhancing the beauty of the stone, which is magnified by the smoothly carved moldings. Most noticeably, the firebox opening has a luscious half-round border that is two inches thick. The feet are augmented by a six-inch thick protruding bolection and the lintel has several thin layers of molding. A bronze rosette medallion, set within beading and a foliate ring, graces each side, also functioning as a vent. Our nero marquina mantel...

17th Century French Oak Entry Doors from a Hotel Particulier, Aix-En-Provence
Located in Dallas, TX
Hand-crafted in the late 1600s in France, this stunning pair of entry doors once graced a hotel particulier in Aix-en-Provence, in the South of France. A hotel particulier is not a hotel in today’s sense of the word, but rather it is a large, private residence, typically with an interior courtyard. It is derived from the Old French word hostel and particulier, which means “private”. There are numerous examples in larger cities in France, such as Paris, Bordeaux, and Aix-en-Provence. The doors were crafted out of local French oak wood. Both doors have been carved with the same details and adorned with two tiers of iron nailheads, one at the very top, and one along the top of the bottom panel. These iron nails secure the long horizontal iron hinge straps on the backs of the doors The bottom portion of the doors consists of a large carved lozenge that consists of four smaller raised lozenges. The middle panel is comprised of a vertical rectangle with an arched top and thick layers of molding that form a fantastic architrave. A significantly thinner molding graces the uppermost panel, which also has been carved as a rectangle (horizontally orientated) with a sinuous bottom. Expertly restored for over 3 months by a talented French ebeniste, the doors combine French history with beautiful functionality (photos of pre-restoration available upon request). Large French entry doors...
