Antique French Porcelain, Gilt and Silvered Brass Clock Set
Located in London, GB
This wonderful clock set, which is comprised of a mantel clock and pair of flanking vases, is designed in a fanciful French ‘Oriental’ style. The set is crafted from brass which has been silvered, parcel gilt and painted. The mantel clock is composed of a tall rectangular body with a break arch top which is crowned by a covered twin-handled urn. The urn features a parcel gilt pointed finial on its cover and a silvered body painted with pink cherry blossoms. This dial is framed by a gilt beaded bezel. The shoulders of the clock body are mounted with parcel gilt and silvered elephant heads holding ring handles. Porcelain panels decorate the front and sides of the silvered clock body. These panels are beautifully decorated with paintings of colourful birds, butterflies and cherry blossom trees, set within gilt stiff-leaf frames. The clock body is set on a silvered rectangular base which is edged with a parcel gilt foliate band. Sèvres Porcelain Garniture, Mounted in Gilt Bronze by Picard
By Manufacture Nationale de Sèvres, Henri Picard
Located in London, GB
With its delightful painted representations of the four seasons and bacchanalian scenes, this ‘bleu celeste’ garniture demonstrates the technical excellence of Sevres factory porcelain. On top of this, the porcelain vases are beautifully decorated with gilt bronze (ormolu) mounts, expertly cast by Henri Picard, the manufacturer and gilder to Emperor Napoleon III. This garniture is comprised of a central jardinière and a pair of flanking vases. The jardinière features a wide porcelain body, which is topped by a gilt bronze guilloche-patterned neck. This is fitted with two geometric handles, which terminate in cherubs masks. The jardinière body is finely decorated with a continuous painting of putti playing together in a woodland setting. One putti holds the pinecone-tipped staff carried by followers of Bacchus (or Dionysus), the god of wine and ecstasy. Several putti ride on a goat, led on a harness by other putti. This painting is edged with jewelled and parcel gilt decoration, set against a bright ‘bleu celeste’ ground. The jardinière stands on a shaped gilt bronze stem, its top encircled by a band of stiff leaves, its middle by a laurel wreath, and its foot by beading. The jardinière is placed on a square gilt bronze plinth, which is decorated with grape-form finials, hung draperies and foliate motifs, and is set on four beaded toupie feet. The pair of vases are similar to the jardinière in their design. They feature ovoid ‘bleu celeste’ porcelain bodies, which are decorated with continuous paintings of the four seasons, within gilt and jewelled frames. Winter is depicted in a scene showing putti huddled together on a sleigh in a snowy landscape, and autumn by cherubs reaping crops with a sickle. Spring is shown by cherubs wearing flower wreaths and dancing while holding garlands, and summer by putti picking grapes and drinking wine. The vases’ bodies are topped by pointed gilt and jewelled ‘bleu celeste’ porcelain lids, crowned by gilt bronze grape finials. Like the jardinière, the vases are fitted with gilt bronze cherub...

Antique Sèvres Style Porcelain and Gilt Bronze Vase with Marine Subject
By Manufacture Nationale de Sèvres
Located in London, GB
This beautiful vase was created in France, in the period when Napoleon III was Emperor (1852-1870). It is designed in the style of Sèvres Manufactory porcelain. Sèvres goods are often beautifully hand painted with pastoral and mythological scenes, and marine subjects. These tended to be set within finely parcel gilt and jewelled frames, offset against turquoise ‘bleu celeste’ or navy 'bleu Sèvres' grounds. The porcelain vase is of classical Amphora form, with a slender elongated neck, a large ovoid body with a slightly waisted base, and a splayed foot. The vase is topped by a porcelain crown, which is navy coloured and decorated with gilding, porcelain ‘jewels’ and a gilt bronze (ormolu) pinecone finial. The navy vase...

Two Gilt Bronze Mounted, Enamelled Onyx Urns by H. Journet & Cie.
By H. Journet & Cie
Located in London, GB
These beautiful vases are designed in the chinoiserie style. Derived from the French word ‘chinois’ for Chinese, chinoiserie was a European style that was inspired by Chinese and East Asian art and design. These urns were crafted by Henri Journet & Cie, a French firm that specialised in the production of Fine onyx items. Henri Journet replaced Eugène Cornu as the director of the company, which was originally called the ‘Société des marbres d'onyx d'Algérie’. These vases are signed ‘Sté Des Onyx H. Journet & Cie / 24 Bd Italiens'. The vases feature bulbous bodies, with short waisted stems and necks, crafted from an orange-veined, cream onyx. The vases are set on a gilt bronze (ormolu) plinths, which are supported on scrolled legs. The onyx vase bodies are decorated with green, blue and red champlevé enamel depictions of Chinese dragons. Empire Style Porcelain and Gilt Bronze Napoleon Vase
By Manufacture Nationale de Sèvres
Located in London, GB
This Sevres style porcelain vase is beautifully painted with an image of Napoleon I on horseback. In this painting, Napoleon visits his men, some of whom are wounded, in what appears to be a military camp. He is seen, leading a group of mounted soldiers, on a white horse, respectfully doffing his bicorne hat to his troops. The painting is signed ‘F. Amblet’. This oval painting is given an elaborate gilded decorative border, reminiscent of a giltwood frame. These beautiful gold foliate patterns continue onto the base of the vase, as well as the top, where we see a pair of griffins. The vase is fitted with two handles, cast as double French imperial eagle heads, which spring from classical female masks, each wearing with winged helmets. ‘M.re IMPle de Sevres’ is painted its base. This antique Napoleonic vase...

Pair of French Louis XVI Period Gilt Bronze and Agate Vases
By Martin Baffert
Located in London, GB
These truly exceptional and rare antique Louis XVI period vases have been sculpted from agate, a precious and highly sought-after stone. The vases are set on square agate bases with gilt bronze laurel wreath socles. The burgundy and claret agate bodies of the vases are mounted with gilt bronze acanthus leaf ornamentation, and twin lion masks joined by draped swags above. The lids of the vases are mounted with gilt bronze, surmounted by pine cone finials. The vases' design is attributed to the late 18th century, French clockmaker Martin Baffert. Baffert worked with a number of Parisian bronziers including Jean-Nicholas Fremont, Nicolas-Guillaume Jourdan and Francois-Robert Leguel, who assisted in the creation of his designs. This pair of vases is very similar to another pair of vases which Baffert designed, which form part of a clock garniture currently in the Rothschild collection at Waddesdon Manor. The Rothschild vases...
