About the Item

The Squash Purple Ashtray in ceramic was originally designed in 1985 by Maria Sanchez for Memphis Milano. The Squash ashtray is one of the smallest objects in the Memphis Milano collection. The overlapping of shapes and colors are distinctive of the “Memphis” philosophy. The bottom of the ashtray features the name of the designer and the collection. Limited Edition of 250 pcs. Color options also include: yellow, gold and light blue. Maria Sanchez started working with Ettore Sottsass, becoming in the 1980s a member of the Memphis Group. She currently lives in Argentina. She is a Strategic Design Consultant for many companies and government administrations and Director of the National Art Fund. She is also an academic researcher, teaching in several Universities in Argentina, Mexico, Panama and Chile. As well as a permanent member of the International Council of the Architecture and Design School of the Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León (UANL), Monterrey, México and lastly, a member of several publishing councils in Latin America. Memphis is the great cultural phenomenon of the 1980s that revolutionized creative and commercial logics in design. Born from the idea of Ettore Sottsass and a group of young designers and architects, in Milan, coupled in the years by famous designers from the international scene, Memphis turned upside down all of the existing parameters on living. Ettore Sottsass as the backbone of the group, design gained a new concept and expression through new shapes, materials and patterns, expanding the creative limits of the industry. Memphis became a symbol of New Design. Its influence is still clear in various sectors of production and beyond.
