About the Item

Norman Norell (1900-1972) is considered to be one of the original fashion designers of the modern American style. His sophisticated silhouettes were both tailored and timeless with an eye for high quality construction and materials. He gave French design houses a run for their money and influenced future American icons such as Bill Blass and Stephen Sprouse. His fans included first ladies, celebrities and professional women including Lauren Bacall, Marilyn Monroe, Lena Horne, Jacqueline Kennedy and Babe Paley, just to name a few. This black wool coat dates back to the late 1960’s and offers a double breasted silhouette with a built in belted waist detail and pronounced front pockets. The dome buttons are a very dark tortoise color that provide a hint of dark chocolate brown in the right light. Definitely meant for cold weather climates as the deceiving streamlined silhouette is actually a very heavy wool weave. Originally retailed at Rich’s of Atlanta which was once a family owned department store that carried the best of the best and dressed the fashionable ladies of Atlanta for decades. CONDITION The coat is in very good condition though there is a hole on the inside front flap of the opening which is hidden when the coat is buttoned and effectively always incognito due to the layers of fabric. Please see photograph 15. The lining seam under one are is loose and could be restitched. Please see photograph 14. MEASUREMENTS The coat size is not marked though it best fits U.S. size 4 with attention to the following measurements. Please note that the coat is narrow through the shoulders and should be worn fitted by design. For visual reference, the mannequin in the photographs is a size 4.
