About the Item

Unlike anything else from the 1990s, Comme des Garcons founder Rei Kawakubo (b. 1942) designed in 1999 for her Spring/Summer 2000 collection this pink-overdyed pullover soft stretch-nylon knit sleeveless top or vest that features multi-tone hand-cut-and-dyed voluminous organza and polyurethane appliques, which are arranged around the neckline and asymmetrically on one side angled like a dart. It can be worn with its plunging V-neck in front or in back by a woman or man. As you can see from our photos of the FirstView runway coverage, this style top was worn under an fuchsia applique-adorned bolero-style short-sleeve jacket, while Kawakubo styled other similar sleeveless tops to stand alone. From Kawakubo's self-described "beautiful chaos" collection, such one-of-a-kind tops are decorated with fringed, slashed, scrunched, shirred and/or couched adornments that recall Polynesian fresh-flower leis. On the runway, they were layered and asymmetrically styled over rumpled misaligned shirts and minimalist bias-cut dresses (see our other listings for a runway-Look salmon-color bias-cut maxi dress or appliqued purple-overdyed top). In terms of fashion history, the collection was especially well-described initially in 1999 by the Vogue reviewer: "Rei Kawakubo's designs are normally unsettling at first, somewhat confusing and, ultimately, incomparably beautiful. What begins as an assault on the senses slowly reveals itself as the work of a true artistic genius--creating some of the most original pieces of the season. At the heart of the collection was a series of shirts and dresses with unexpected abundance of texture and color. Evoking exotic flowers or corals, Kawakubo piled yards of fabric into bundles of ruffles and pleats that dramatically redefined the silhouette. Flat surfaces suddenly blossomed into enormous volumes. Nothing old, nothing that has been done before--that's Comme des Garcons' mantra." The Japanese-size Small top will also suit a larger size given its flexibility to stretch like a T-shirt. For styling inspiration pertaining to our other Comme des Garcon listing, this top pairs well with a runway-Look salmon-color bias-cut maxi dress from the SS2000 collection (seen in our additional pic of the FirstView documentation), for which we would suggest adding another three-dimensional element, such as a mis-buttoned shirt as a middle layer or scrunched asymmetrically-pinned part of the lower bodice.

Couture 1990 MartinMargiela Unique Openwork Mohair Knit Snap&Tie Convertible Top
By Maison Martin Margiela
Located in Chicago, IL
With Belgian former couture-fashion designer Martin Margiela's original blank-white textural-cotton corner-sewn label from the early 1990s visible above the prominent knit-hole, this openwork yarn top that is clearly a one-of-a-kind "Line 0" Artisanal garment by Maison Martin Margiela is crocheted from a brown soft animal-hair blend into a see-through changeante pattern recalling a collapsed spiderweb. A prominent European dealer sold a similarly designed but longer deconstructed openwork grey cape that also features a circular knit hole in a mohair-blend. Its remaining additional tag indicates that it was produced by Margielas' longtime Italian knitter Miss Deanna for the Autumn-Hiver 1993-1994 collection. Further, we have found similar one-of-a-kind Margiela openwork-knit and unraveling pieces, as well as one with oversized snaps like the fasteners on our top, dating back to his 1992 collections. Suggesting it could have been from an earlier collection, Antwerp's fashion museum MoMu featured a pale deconstructed mohair knit sweater dating from 1990 in its major Martin Margiela 20-year retrospective, which was produced in collaboration with the designer during his final year at the house in 2008. Based on other Margiela couture pieces with more than one remaining identification tag, the design of our cardigan without a remaining text tag began as a vintage top collected by Martin Margiela to upcycle or reproduce, and/or it was made-to-order by Miss Deanna before he finished it to some degree with his Paris-based team. Our knit fastens with pompon-tipped yarn ties, along with two signature silver oversized-snap buttons, which most noticeably appeared on Margiela tops in 1994 for a collection that was inspired by toy-doll wardrobes and included human-sized reproductions of actual miniatures. For price comparison, another 1stDibs dealer currently lists a silver-oversized-snap-fastening brown faux-leather windbreaker "doll" jacket by Maison Martin Margiela for upwards of $7,000. Also on 1stDibs, two other Margiela 1990s...

CommeDesGarcons 1999 RunwayLook12 BiasCut TranslucentSatin SalmonPink Maxi Dress
By Comme des Garçons, Rei Kawakubo Comme Des Garcons
Located in Chicago, IL
Rei Kawakubo designed this translucent salmon-pink bias-cut satin sleeveless maxi dress evening gown for her brand Comme des Garcons, which debuted on a model at Paris Fall Fashion Week as "Look 12" among the Vogue photo-coverage of her Spring/Summer 2000 collection (see our last photo of the ensemble). The unusual V-neck shape creates a deep central drape in the front of the unlined dress that prevents the synthetic semi-transparent fabric from clinging to the torso. To continue to flatter the curvy shape of the lower body like the bias-cut enables, such as while walking, Kawakubo added an additional piece of fabric with a circling angular seam that rises from the wider hem. With the exception of the brand tag, all others were cut off by the sole owner to eliminate bulk and visibility through the dress. If the buyer would prefer, the fabric can be made shinier and completely smooth with professional pressing. If the buyer would like to create a layered ensemble with this gown as seen on the runway, we have other textural colorful tops to choose from with over-dyed unique appliques from this same Spring/Summer 2000 collection. However, we think our backless-mannequin photos show that this minimal dress...
