About the Item

Warped by fire and eroded by time, this ceramic storage jar from Yunnan province is a testament to the wabi-sabi beauty of provincial Chinese pottery. Dated to the 15th/16th century, the sculptural jar is an example of the lesser-known blue and white pottery wares of southwest China, decorated with freeform designs and an earth-toned palette. The jar is painted with underglaze in sweeping brushstrokes, applied with locally sourced cobalt for a subdued, blue-grey color. The tapered base is adorned with rectangular lappets and the rounded shoulders are brushed with chrysanthemum blossoms and trailing vines. A border of large ruyi heads encircles the rim, a motif for longevity and good health. A translucent glaze with celadon tone and subtle crazing finishes the exterior, now worn and faded from exposure to the elements.
