About the Item

A wonderfully designed and gorgeously glazed Mashiko Ware curved Mingei vase by Japanese National Treasure pottery master Tatsuzo Shimaoka. This work displays his famous Jomon Zogan rope inlay pattern design and hand-painted decoration with beautiful blue coloring. The piece radiates in the light. The vase is signed by Shimaoka with his traditional "Ta" signature/mark on the base and also comes with a signed and sealed original wood box. The work is exquisite in every way and has a wonderful feel and heft to it. Shimaoka, who started as an apprentice to famed Japanese potter Shoji Hamada in 1946 before opening his own studio, has exhibited worldwide including North America, Asia, and Europe. In 1996 he was bestowed the title of Japanese Living Treasure by the Japanese government. In 1999 he was awarded The Order of the Rising Sun. His work can be found in many international museums and collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the Museum of New Zealand, the British Museum, the ASU Art Museum, the Minneapolis Institute of Art, the Brooklyn Museum, the University of Michigan Museum of Art, the Artizon Museum, the Asian Art Museum, the John Young Museum of Art, the Royal Ontario Museum, and the Israel Museum among others. Would be a great addition to any collectors of Shimaoka's work or Japanese pottery or make for an eye-catching stand-alone accent piece in about any setting.
