Antique Japanese Cloisonne Flying Geese Enamel Plate Goto

About the Item

An antique Japanese late Meiji era decorative enamel over copper plate or charger. Attributed to Goto The interior of the plate is adorned with a polychrome design of flying geese surrounded by floral rondels and images of butterflies on the olive green ground on the borders made in the Cloisonne technique. The backside is decorated with a foliate scroll ornament made in the Cloisonne technique. Unmarked. Circa:1880 Shōzaburō Gotō was a skilled Japanese artisan who began his work in the Nagoya area before relocating to the international trading hub of Yokohama around 1872–1874. Known for producing high-quality cloisonné enamel pieces, he gained recognition by winning 4th prize at the 1877 First Japan Domestic Exhibition in Tokyo. His reputation grew, securing 1st prize at the 1881 Second Japan Domestic Exhibition and earning a medal at the 1893 Chicago World’s Columbian Exposition. Today, examples of his exquisite craftsmanship can be found in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. Dimensions: D 12 in. All measurements are approximate.
