Large Japanese Chakinseki Cloisonne Covered Jar, Meiji Period, circa 1900, Japan

About the Item

A spectacular large Japanese chakinseki cloisonné globular jar and cover, in he style of Namikawa Yasuyuki, Meiji period, circa 1900, Japan. The jar with a spherical body supported by three, comma-shaped feet formed as magatama. Magatama are sacred ceremonial stones, traditionally made out of precious jade, with a distinct comma shape. A round opening to the top of the jar fitted with a cover and surmounted with a knob handle. The jar exquisitely decorated with silver wire and a wide array of colored cloisonné enamels. The decoration divided into three bands. The top band with a chakinseki cloisonné ground of sparkling copper with phoenixes in flight between scrolls of flowers and vines. Chakinseki is a cloisonné technique in which the enamel ground is sprinkled with flakes of reflective materials. The name means "tea dust". The middle band of a black cloisonné ground with quatrefoil reserves of alternating dragons and phoenixes. The dragons portrayed against a light yellow ground, their bodies in various poses, writhing and coiled upon themselves. Each one grasping a goldstone flaming pearl within their claws. The phoenixes portrayed in flight against a very light pink ground, their wings spread wide, long tail feathers streaming out around them. The lower band formed as lapets adorned with odd and charming mythical lemur-like animals, with wide eyes, sharp claws, spotted or striped bodies, and long, bushy tails. The cover decorated with an intricate wire ground with scattered roundels of butterflies and stylized dragons against a chakinseki ground. The knob handle with a chakinseki ground and featuring a stylize phoenix in flight. The underside of the jar with beautiful scrolling wire work on a burgundy enamel ground, with three stylized white roses and a single larger red rose.

An exquisite pair of Japanese mixed metal bronze hibachi with idyllic landscape scenes, Meiji period (1868-1912), late 19th or early 20th century, Japan. The hibachi of generous proportions, with a high, slightly splayed foot, a short, narrow waist, and a large and wide cylindrical body. The body decorated in the mixed metal technique. The bronze carved and set with inlays of copper and silver to create wonderful landscape scenes. A pair of animal mask handles to the sides. Each hibachi with a cast signature reading ?? (Toyomi?) to the underside. One side of each hibachi depicting an evening scene, with scholars walking about a mountain retreat, replete with a waterfall, pavilions, pagodas, and pine trees, all shimmering under a full moon.
