Chinese Pottery Ceramic Glazed Mud Figure of Court Lady Tang Dynasty with Stand
Located in Studio City, CA
Simply gorgeous and so delicately and beautifully made. This work has been molded in a whitish, dense terracotta, typical of the region of the capital of Luoyang, and then lightly glazed. We are not sure how to date this work. We believe, based on comparisons, that this piece could date as far back as the Tang dynasty (though we are not experts and have not had this verified by one. Again, this is not our area of expertise). The white terracotta and glaze appear correct as does the figures stately pose and elaborate hairstyle which was a characteristic feature of Tang pottery women. The people of ancient China believed that some part of the essence and life force of a human being was contained in the hair. Much time and effort went into this to create elaborate coiffures that the woman proudly displayed when in public. The Tang dynasty is also the only period in Chinese History to have known a female sovereign, The Empress Wu Zetian (625-706). Comes with Lucite display stand...

Chinese Blue and White Fu Lion Headrest
Located in Chicago, IL
This small ceramic block is actually a form of Chinese headrest or neck pillow. Popular during the Qing dynasty, rigid headrests such as this were used by upper-class women to protect their elaborate hairstyles by elevating the head during slumber. This example dates to the late 20th century and is glazed in the blue-and-white style with a stencil-transfer design. Each side of the headrest has a quadrilobe cartouche framing two mythical fu lions playing with a brocade ball, a motif that evokes the idiom "may you and your descendant achieve high rank." A powerful and benevolent guardian, the fu lion (shizi) is the perfect force to protect against nightmares and bad energy. The playful scene is surrounded by a cracked ice pattern dotted with plum blossoms, symbols of winter and longevity. A geometric meander trims the corners and small bats frame coin...

Chinese Extraordinary Outer Space Moonscape Natural Stone "Painting"
Located in South Burlington, VT
Extraordinary natural work, one of a kind. Custom framed This Chinese extraordinary natural stone "painting" of an outer space nightscape suggests our universe of countless moons and stars and might remind us of a similar and unique evening experience in our lives. The powerful and colorful depiction is executed in natural dark green- almost black, cream and yellow (limonite mineral) colors. This is called a dream stone Shih-hua. They are cut from historic Dali marble found in the Cangshan mountains of western China. These mysterious mountains, unique in the world, are known for yielding incredible and fantastic natural landscaped works of art created over tens of millions of years from mineral inclusions that affected the process of ancient organic material which transformed into limestone and finally resulted in marble- a metamorphic hard stone. This art form is centuries of years old since the Ming dynasty. Dream stones became favored art in the west particularly since the 19th century when French collectors named them Pierres de reve. This thin marble stone "painting" is approximately 1/4" thick and is cut from a large slab of rough material revealing incredible patterns in soft white and gray colors. Its weight is surprisingly modest- easily hung with standard hardware. Dimensions: Frame: 25 inches high and 25 inches wide. Site: 16.75" diameter Provenance: Private Chinese collection, Yunnan, China. History of dream stone "paintings": Moonlight stones...
