Japanese six-panel Kano School screen with a boldly painted depiction of a writhing dragon, rendered in ink on paper. Attributed to Kano Tanyu (1602-1674), 17th century signed and sealed. Dimensions: H 173 cm x W 370 cm. Here the dragon emerges from the swirling cosmic dust of the universe. The dragon represents yang, which encompasses light, the sun, the heavens, active forces and masculine forces. Originally one of a pair, the other being a tiger, together the dragon and tiger are celestial companions and represent both the cosmic and earthly powers of this world. Together they symbolize the duality of the universe - the yin and yang. The tiger represents darkness, the moon, and the earth and feminine forces. Kano Tan'yu (1602-1674) was one of the foremost Japanese painters of the Kano school. Originally named Morinobu, he was the eldest son of Kano Takanobu and grandson of Kano Eitoku, founders of the Kano school of painting. From 1617, Tan'yu as an official artist of the Tokugawa shogun, worked on large scale commissions at Edo, Nijo, Osaka, and Nagoya castles, where his screens and panels in vibrant colors with subjects such as tigers birds and plants were used to bring nature inside, while his extensive use of gilding was designed to reflect light within the dark interiors of these castle spaces. This bold combination of color and gold now exemplifies the tastes and aesthetic sensibilities of the aristocratic Daimyo class of the Momoyama period. Though well-known for his colorful pieces, Kano Tan'yu was also accomplished in classical monochromatic ink painting, creating works more reminiscent of the Chinese scholar painters in both style and subject matter. Tan'yu's masterful handling of ink and use of light and dark is evident in the swirling tempestuous clouds and the powerful snaking form of the dragon that dominates the composition of this screen, with a comparable example being the famed 'Unryu-zu' dragon ceiling painted over the course of eight years by Tan'yu for the Myoshin-ji temple in Kyoto.
