About the Item

Pair of charming 19th-century Chinese export reverse glass and mirror paintings, depicting two noblewomen within an interior setting with the typical Chinese Traditional customs and fans on the hands. The paintings come with their original hardwood frame and the old pins in the back of the panel. There are two panels, on each painting. In order to prevent the mirror from scratching too much the mirror with minor patterns was drawn first and placed behind the glass which has the main scene, the Portrait of the woman. With exquisite detail and sparkling color, the portrait of two young women is a remarkable example of reverse glass and mirror painting. Lending the finished work a subtle three-dimensional effect, painting on the opposite side of a glass pane requires the artist to work in reverse. In this case, the delicate features of the woman's face and the intricate patterning of her robe were painted first, followed by the background and coloring. Reverse glass pictures became fashionable in the 18th century. Glass panels were sent from Europe to China by sea, where they were painted to order, framed, and then returned to the West for inclusion in Chinese-inspired interiors.
